I have an 01 GLS. The left gauge knob to adjust where the air comes from, there's 5 settings. The one on the FAR right, and the next one (which direct the air to the windshield, and the second directs the air to windshield + floor). If I have the AC off, and just the cool air on, and switch it to one of those 2 settings, the AC goes on automatically. I can turn it off manually, though. If I switch it to one of the other 3 settings, AC off. Back to the first 2, AC on.
That normal?

You can prevent it from happening by snipping a wire (on 01-03's only apparently) as discussed over on EC. 04+ (US models) have different HVAC logic and the AC stays on when it's set to either windshield defrost, regardless of what you do to the AC button. Again, as discussed on EC, there's a way to hardwire the compressor to get around this, IIRC. I put US models in parentheses, cuz on my Canadian 04, I still have control of the AC when I set it to defrost... don't know about 05+ Canadian models.

Hyunelan can tell you the reasoning behind why they do this.

From another post of mine:
Lehmans Terms, since this is getting complicated:
In defrost mode, the A/C runs. Why = The air is cooled so it removes moisture that is in the air to begin with (cold air can't hold as much 'humidity'). Then, the 'dry air' is heated, so it can hold more moisture, and blown onto the windshield - which evaporates moisture off the windshield and into the 'dry air'.
If you disable the A/C in defrost mode, you are not using dried air, and thus only using heat to dry the windshield, not heat+dired air.
