i could use some recommendations. I DON'T WANT: hair bands, speedy drums, or cookie monster vocals. something like Clutch or Pantera but with singing instead of growling would be good.

I have to many to recommend... but I will only do one, because for some reason I totally fell in love with this CD, It's pretty metalish, and its got alot of singing. The music itself is amazing.

do you want technical or just heavy as all hell?
a lot of the Technical bands listed are also really heavy... here are a few of my favorites.
i have about 590hrs of music (99% metal) and i would suggest:
Technical:
Iced Earth
In Flames
Still Remains (great keyboarding there)
DragonForce (fantasy metal)
Into Eternity
All That Remains
Arch Enemy (sketch vocals, but also heavy)
Chimaria (also heavyish)
Blind Guardian (fantasy metal)
Bullet For My Valentine
Cradle Of Filth
Darkest Hour
Falconer (fantasy metal)
God Forbid
Killswitch Engage
Nightwish (fantasy metal, operatic female vocals)
Opeth
Shadows Fall
Soilwork
Heavy-ish:
Mudvayne
Mushroomhead
10 Years (mellow good chill music... sounds kinda like tool vocals)
36 Crazyfists
Factory 81 (no longer around)
Lamb of God (aka Burn The Priest on first release)
As I Lay Dying
Bury Your Dead (sounds kinda like Hatebreed)
Dead To Fall
Hatebreed
Kittie
Martyr A.D.
Mesuggah
Otep (scary female vocals... like uberdeep growls... almost manlike)
Rammstein
Hanzel Und Gretyl (more industrial metal)
The Red Chord
Sinai Beach
Other:
Cold
Disturbed
Dog Fashion Disco ("Evil Circus Music")
Flaw
Godsmack
Gwar (really 3 genres in one)
Ill Nino
Lacuna Coil (siren-like vocals)
Matchbook Romance (sort of emo on a lot of songs though)
Orgy
Powderburn
Roadrunner United CD (a little of everything)
Rob Zombie (as well as White Zombie)
Skillet (only christian metal i listen to)
oh, i forgot to add:
Technical:
3 Inches of Blood
Children Of Bodom
hope those help

Nothingface
A Static Lullaby

Three Days Grace
Taproot
HIM
System of a Down
Avenged Sevenfold

Woot revive the threadage.
The Duskfall
Bloodsimple
American Head Charge
I have a longer list at home.
I go to pandora.com here at work and you just put in a band you like and it matches up other bands pretty well.
Yozick

Taproot
Floater
Jonny Cash (yeah I said it)
Mr. Dan

Can't go wrong with Tool.
I find 99% of what would be termed "metal" nowadays laughable and juvenile. It's really hard to pigeonhole a lot of good groups into the "metal" category. A Pefect Circle is another favorite.
No growling or silliness, just technical excellence.

I just started listening to this band element eighty. I really like them there first album is the best. If you could mix atreyu, system of a down, and staind together you would have element eighty. Check out the song called "Rabies" its great.
