I have an ARK (the best but least publicized) shifter & did not like the excess skin from the OEM boot. I figured I could just slide the boot further down the console cover and it worked.

Before pic from xavantex & 05xd shifters:
http://www.elantraxd.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=5214&stc=1 http://www.elantraxd.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=5215&stc=1

How it was done:
1. Remove the shifter cover
2. Remove the 4 screws that hold the shifter boot in place
3. Remove the staples that hold the boot in place (or you can just cut the boot off and leave the staples in)
4. Make 4 cuts into the corners of the boot so that you can slide the boot further down and pass the plastic tabs that screw the boot holder back onto the cover.
5. Flip the boot inside out. Remove the metal clip that holds the leather onto the plastic at the top of the boot. Move the clip below the plastic and have it wrap around just the leather portion.
6. Flip the boot right side out. The plastic ring should now be tucked.
7. Reinstall the cover and you have a boot that better fits your short shifter.

Notes: Sliding the boot down wasn't enough to get the boot short enough since the boot only slides so far down before it gets too tight. I was actually going to cut the top of the boot but when I moved the clip, I liked the result. Having the pastic at the top of the boot tucked and hidden makes the shifter look classier.

The OEM boot is plenty fine. Your boot has that crowded look that I was trying to avoid. I think we can avoild it by getting something that has a bigger angle. In your case you could actually tuck the top part of your boot with a 2 metal clips. One to keep the top part of the shifter further down and another to keep a tight section of leather just below the knob.

mines not crowded, the pic just shows it out of gear...it has to have a little slack to move in and out of gears

Thats right, I purposely put it in first to give it a cleaner look.

looks really nice man, especially for a mod that requires nothing extra other than your own time.

Hope no one minds me dredging up this topic, but I ordered one of these about a month ago and ran into some issues with the fitment. As a preface, I have a '06 XD2 model car.

It appears that they slightly redesigned the shifter trim ring for the XD2 and it threw a monkey wrench into everything. Instead of 4 corner screws and staples, it uses some snap flanges. The boot also looks different. Based on photos, the XD boot is 4 pieces of leather with four corner stitches, whereas the XD2 boot is only two pieces of leather with two corner stiches. Maybe some of you with XDs can confirm this.

I'm working with them to see what they can do about it, but just an FYI for anyone who might have considered ordering one for an XD2...it doesn't fit quite right (at least for now.)

Oh, and I have a stock leather shift knob (same one pictured above) that I'd be willing to part with.

** UPDATE **

Finally got the shift boot back from redlinegoods (based on Poland.) The sales rep was patient and communicative. The result: the boot fits and looks great! They shortened it some more (the amount I indicated wasn't enough) and cut the base a little differently so that it wouldn't pinch/bunch up in the corners.

For comparison, the stock boot:
