I went to edmunds.com and I looked up the 2006 Xd ... There is a link on the main page that shows you what your car will really cost you after all of the " hidden " expenses...
Its not looking good for my elantra...
According to Edmunds TCO, the Elantra really costs a total of $ 33,416 !
Considering that I bought my Xd back in Nov of 2002 (03 model), I have had it for 4 yrs... that is just around $ 30,000 !!!
Hot damn.

Well, after insurance, gas, oil changes, other unknowns, cars are expensive.

I was thinking of it the other day....since ive had the car, im sure gas has been at an AVERAGE (since it was lowER in 2003) of about 2.20. say my car gets an AVERAGE of 28mpg...ive got 72k miles on it now...thats 2,571 gallons of gas, and at 2.20, thats 5600 in gas alone. add in oil changes, 20$ each, 480$, not really much other maintenence...mods added in will drive it up...about 14,500 after financing, im already to 21k-ish with car, gas and oil.

Doesn't that suck... At least I have lower costs since I don't do much mileage (right now I only have 20k miles), but I have full insurance, regular maintenance, oil changes etc. but it still costs to have a car... :(

I'm lucky 'bout that, I bought the car used and do the maintenances myself, I don't use that much gas as I don't drive that much in town, and when I go to my home town (around 3h trip) I use the services of "allo-stop" it's a company helping with rides-sharing, the passengers I take (3) give me 10$ each an the trip cost me around 25$ of gas ... so the extra money goes to my oil changes!

Have you tried comparing it to competing cars? I've always thought the Elantra had an advantage in up front cost but a disadvantage in resale. It'd be interesting to see what the numbers actually come out to.

the Elantra 2006 GLS have a 10,570$ depreciation in 5 years ...
compared, a 2006 Sentra have a 9,256$ depreciation and a 2006 Corolla CE have a 8,082$ one ...
The Elentra does have a higher depreciation for it's price ... but I still love the car! :D
EDIT : BTW I don't look the depreciation on a car when I buy it because I usually have it until it dies (litterally) all my other car were bought back by a junkyard, the one with the biggest millage was my loyal Mazda 626 89 with 205k miles ... died of a rusted frame, the engine was still perfectly running!

i will say, im happy with the maintenence of this car...aside from stuff i didnt directly cause, its been basic oil/gear oil changes, brakes once before upgraded, plugs, little ****....havent had to put much into this car unless i caused the damage myself (ie, blowing the engine)

I was thinking more along the lines of how a Civic would compare... but yeah, the STI is a little bit more. And as for gas, not only do I have to pay for more of it, I have to pay for 93 octane. :hand:

And the Sentra cost about $1700 more new, and the Corolla about $2100 more, so it works out to be the same in the end.
This whole "total cost of ownership" is such a crock. Different locations, driving styles, maintence schedules, local pricing, miles driven a years insurance rates per customer . . . .Anyone see where I'm going here? Just another way to make something look better or worse depending on who's writing the report. This, among other things is why I put NO stock into anything the magazines, edmunds and JD powers says. Most is so biased in one direction or the other it's not even funny.
Also consider this, a car is NOT an investment. It's an expense.

I've had my car since march 2005... put about 25k miles on it, recently paid off the car (originally about 15000 with tax/interest) after all the mods I've put in and oil changers/gas/insurance i calculated that i spent a total of $25-27k. But i know now that since the car is paid off all i will have to deal with is insurance/gas/maintenance and the occasional mod... my insurance is very high btw...

I only pay $663/yr for insurance. That alone is going to mess up the $35k calculated cost.

I'm 26 and I recently switched from state farm to amica (#1 jd powers customer satisfaction). They only take on customers with spotless records. I was paying ~$1100 with state farm. Impressively, this is in the chicago area and I'm single.
Everyone should check out this website:

There's a reason why state farm/allstate are making tons of money.

I still have about 1 1/2 years left on my loan payments...
I pay $ 305 (loan)
+ $ 877 /6 mo (insurance)
x 1.5 years = $ 8131 ...
That does not include fuel or maintenance & misc.
I am just trying to figure out what I can do with all that $$ if I didn't have to pay it at all ?? ?
Choices.... Choices.....

My car is done next July. Santa Fe isn't supposed to be done until June 2009, but once the Elantra is paid off, I'll throw that monthly payment at the SF and get it done a year early.
I pay $1230 a year for insurance for my wife and I on BOTH vehicles. Full coverages (obviously, since they're not paid off), $250 deductible.
Between insurance and car payments, I pay about $9500.00 a year. Add in gas, oil changes, standard maintenance - probably over $13,000 a year just to own and operate the 2 vehicles. Luckily neither my wife, nor I, have far to drive (she's 3 miles from work, I'm 7 miles - but go home for lunch so 28 miles/day for me).
