View Full Version : Big changes coming for me...

Well, I have decided to sell my XD to my best friend.

My g/f will be trading/selling her 2003 tiburon in exchange for an automatic Elantra.

I want to simplify my life and reduce my expenses... by doing this, we will be saving over $ 8000 / year on car payments, insurance, fuel, and maintenance...

I will be relying on my bicycle to move around town most of the time, but I still have my g/f's car + my motorcycle as a backup ...

The big question is, what will I do with all the extra $$ !!!!! ?

I spent 4 hours yesterday re-installing most of the stock parts... I re-installed the stock seats, and stock hood.

What I will not change are the Tiburon brakes and lowered suspension / wheels & tires or the MSD box.

I also left the ported IM and TB on there + the full exhaust system ...

Also, I need someone to come by and pick up the carbon fiber hood, I will sell it for $ 30 (yes thirty dollars ), just get it out of here for me PLEASE !!! :phone:

It weighs only 15lb or something like that... a little worn out, needs a buff-job to make it shine again.

Also, the racing seats are to go with the mounting brackets ... I'll give them away FREE. Just take them away. Please.

=)

I called the bank, made the payoff over the phone..

Thats it. I'm Car Free.

Would you ship the seats if I paid for shipping? :)

I'll just add this - you won't be 'saving' $8000 a year, because your payments are already paid off. Not having a car is probably not the wisest idea I've ever heard. What do you do when it's raining like hell (rains every day in FL, right?) and you can't take the bicycle or motorcycle because she needs the car for something? I would either unmod the Elantra and drop insurance to the lowest legal level, or buy another cheapo car to have for work on 'unrideable' days.

The car was paid off pre-emptively, awaiting the check from my friend... lol

I could not have paid it off unless I was selling it.

In regards to the rain... no, it does not rain every day in FL. Rain has not stopped me from riding even one single day since December of 2005 - not one single day.

I worked my way through every single excuse in the world not to get rid of my car, but in the end I know I really don't need it as much as the world would like me to believe.

Gotta say with your recent threads and anti-car attitudes of late, I'm not really suprised. I guess I kind of expected it to a degree.

Good luck with that bicycle thing.

My wife didn't think she would need a car also. I am usually the driver and she hardly ever drove her car. She also figured that she could just use her dad's car if I wasn't available, since he's old and doesn't drive much now. But now after 2 years of not having her own car, she's wanting a vehicle again because it's a major inconvenience for her having to wait for me to get her errands done or having to borrow her dad's car.

Also, I have a number of friends who ride their motorcycles to work. Not a single person owns JUST a bike. If they do ride a bike to work, it's usually on the weekends when the roads and freeways are less crowded. Some of them think the weekday commute is too dangerous on the SoCal freeways. One guy came from NYC, and he eventually sold his GSX-R because he said people drive really crazy out here compared to NYC.

I think within 2 year's time you'll be back in a car again. One day you'll wake up and reality will hit you that all your preaching amounts to nothing because a car is almost a necessity in most places of the U.S. and smoking will never be completely banned.

evan938
08-18-2006, 11:29 AM
LOL.

and as for crazy drivers (never been to cali or NYC, so i cant comment)...but chicago...oh my god...

i was doing 80-85 and getting passed by grannies and cab drivers. i hate driving in chicago...im almost glad i missed chicago HIN this year just to not have to deal with traffic

BobMs_wht2k2
08-18-2006, 11:44 AM
Trust me Evan, NYC and LA make Chicago look like a midwestern one-stoplight town. . . . SOOOO much different.

hyunelan2
08-18-2006, 11:46 AM
Chicago's not that bad, it's fast (when not under construction), but most people have at least 1/2 a clue of how to drive. Wanna see people who can't drive - go to St. Louis!

Even though the deal is sealed to move outta the elantra, I still think you should have a car. Can your GF ride the bike if you need the car for the day (say you need to pickup something you can't carry on a motorcycle)?

BlackElantraGT

Off topic but,

Driving in big cities is definitely something that you have to learn and get used to, or just give up and take public transportation. San Francisco is pretty bad because you have INSANE inclines with blind stops (I'm still too scared to drive a manual in that city). Not only that, but in the downtown area of Frisco, you have to be careful what lane you're in because a lot of the streets become 1 way and you have buses, electric buses, cable cars, and streetcars, all traveling along side you, and it's easy to be in their lane by mistake.

But NYC I think is even crazier because of the aggressive taxi cab drivers. It took me over an hour to just get out of the city and once I hit Harlem, the streets got a bit scary. Even if you've never been to NYC, you will know exactly when you've hit Harlem because the scenery suddenly changes. You no longer see white people, and you no longer see Central Park. By this point, all my wife and I wanted to do was get out of the city since the sun was setting in about an hour, but it was more difficult than I thought because I tried to stay on Avenue of the Americas for as long as possible until I saw a street big and public enough to turn onto and find a highway. Somehow after this ordeal, I ended up in some Jersey suburb before I was able to stop and look at the map to get back on the right highway.

FordFasteRR

I understand that some of you belive that there is no way to survive in America without a car, but I disagree.

In SOME places, cars are almost required because of the distances people have to travel daily.. In MY case, I do not travel far.

I live IN the city, not the suburbs... therefore almost everything I need is within 1 to 5 miles of my house. I even work 5 miles from home 3 days a week, and 7 miles 2 days a week... The beach is just 3 miles away from my house...

I am lucky enough to be situated within reasonable distances to everything.

For shopping, hauling, groceries, etc... I have a trike with a huge basket on the back =) ... $ 0.00 mpg.

The mall, home depot, kmart, autoparts, bookstore, theatre, old navy, tons of other restaurants and pubs are all within 1 or 2 miles away from me...

It will be a new experience in my life. I can afford any reasonably priced car on the market, but I chose not to own one. Now, I will have lots of extra $$ to enjoy my life + I get the benefit of the bicycle exercise...

In situations where I really need a car, I will just use my G/F's car ...

My options are still open.

Also, take a look at THIS ARTICLE (http://www.velocide.com/thread_view.php?thread_id=20&forum_id=2) about a lady with kids that does not own a car, she does everything on bicycles. The options are still open for people who do not want a car.

In regards to parting out items...

I will not be shipping anything. It is a big hassle, and I don't want to deal with it.

I am almost willing to give it all away for free, I just want to get rid of it because I have no real use for it.

I also have a set of metal endlinks sitting in the OEM packages.. I WILL ship that for $ 30.

I also have 2 spare intake manifolds and throttle bodies. I have a bunch of fuel rails and fuel rail nitrous adapters...

=)

Ford....hate to say it but unless you ship it you're going to have a hard time getting rid of this stuff.

If the "buyer" pays for it then where's the hassle? All you have to do is drop it off at the depot....

And I dunno what # I am in line but I'll call dibs on that hood as well.

I dunno Evan, I would still pick the trike over the cat. I've always wanted one for some reason. As retarded as a trike may be, a young, single male owning a cat is super gay. More gay than 2 homos living in San Francisco who drives a Prius with an adopted chinese baby strapped to the carseat.

It's more annoying living with a cat than it is having a wife. At least the wife can cook, clean, and put out some time. A cat is like an indecisive woman with bipolar disorder who does nothing but sleep all day, sheds hair all over the place, coughs up nasty hairballs, and can't stop licking herself. One minute she wants to snuggle and play with you, but the next minute she's clawing at you to get away.

I adore my wife's cat and all after knowing my wife for 7 years, but sometimes I just feel like kicking a field goal with that cat.
