I just got back from the dealer...
I traded in my g/f's 2003 GT v6 6spd Tib for an 04 XD2 with automatic with only 4500 miles !!!
I paid $ 1600 out the door....

WOOOOOOT !!!!!!
The reason we decided to do this was because the tib already had 39k miles and it was HORRIBLE on gas... It has tons of torque steer and has bad visibility ...
We originally bought the tib because my g/f wanted a " sporty car " ... we paid $ 17k OTD for it back in Feb of 03. ...
She decided that she didn't want a stick shift anymore, so the automatic was our top priority + 4 doors for future kids...
So we went to the dealer just to see what they had and we found this 04 XD in gold/champagne(?) automatic with only 4500 miles !!!
It was owned by a little old lady that only used it to go to the supermarket 5 blocks from her house... she traded it in for a sonata .... so I negociated the deal.
The GK was due for the timing belt at 60k miles, that was only 21k miles left to go or about 2 years before it needed that service which is quite expensive. The GK also need tires and brake service in about 6 to 12 months because they were already wearing down quite a bit... .. with the XD2, it has 55k miles to go before it needs the timing belt service, and the oem tires/brakes won't need replacement for at least 3 more years... The savings in maintenance cancel out the 1600 initial investment + she gets an (almost) new car again!
3 more things: the insurance was slightly less on the XD2, and fuel savings will also add up considerably over the GK + she has her autofragil transmission ...

You said you are going to sell your XD elantra as well correct? If so are you going to swap some mods onto this new elantra? Try the rota slipstreams on the XD2 and you'll notice a difference in better acceleration/mpg as i did.

I always liked that color, I thought it had potencial(sp)... You just have to do it right and itd be ****ing sweet. Course alot of people wont agree with me at all... A body kit, and some nice rims all in that color would be sweet. anyways.. yea congrats... You just saved a BUNCH of money...

I don't plan to do any mods to this car... however, for the sake of future maintenance, I will be installing a K&N air filter into it...
My objective for this car is to get maximum savings in fuel mileage with it, so anything that will boost fuel mileage will be a pro.
I don't want to swap the rota's onto it because they require fancier tires than stock-types... so when its time to replace the stockers I can get a better deal on tires than the wider ones on the rota's.....

Aren't tire prices slowly rising too? I thought I heard that somewhere, since an ingredient of rubber tires is oil...

haha already talking about mods eh? wow, i haven't ever seen this. why didn't you want to wait for an 07 elantra? i think they look a little cleaner although pretty much still the same car so you made a good choice.
wow, the 03 tib left huh? she didn't want 5-speed? wow, that's the first time i heard someone saying that. but i understand, automatics are easy, but sometimes a pain in the arse since you have to look down at shifting.
starting a family? wow congrats! elantra is a good car. economic as ****. a little slow, but who needs any more power?

as for the car...cool? ive seen 1-2 gold ones around here...definately a unique color.
and as for the rotas....you cant put stock size tires on them? theyd just be a little thin on the wheels...arent they 6.5?

I don't think I've ever seen that color around here before. It's definitely unique. Next time I buy a car, I'm actually going to consider leasing, because the maintenance costs involved after 60K miles gets expensive. I still have yet to do my timing belt and accessory belt service, along with replacing the struts. This is at least $1000 maitenance service for a car that's barely worth more than $6000. It doesn't really make too much sense financially.

Leasing a car, I'm told, is like renting an apartment. I really don't need to say anything else.

That's actually not true. The public is still ill-informed about leasing. The difference between owning a home and a car is that over time a home appreciates in value, while almost every vehicle depreciates the moment you take it off the lot. You also can take advantage of tax savings and benefits with a home, while you generally would not be able to do so with a car. Also, in 10 years do you expect to drive the same car? Probably not, but if you bought a home, more than likely you'll be living there for awhile. You can put money into your house and it'll increase it's value. You put money into your car either via maintanence or mods, and the value says the same or goes down.
The problem with most people is that they think their car is an asset, when it really isn't. If you were in a money crunch, do you think the bank will give you a loan if you list your asset as a car, whose loan still hasn't been paid off? They'll laugh at you. With a home, if need be, you can take out a line of credit or a 2nd mortgage on your home.
So no, leasing a car is not the same as renting an apartment.

I know what you're saying. I drove a 13 year old car. No problems. I also plan to drive a 40+ year old car someday, big deal.
There's no denying it. The cheapest thing you can do with vehicles is do your homework, use common sense when buying/test driving vehicles, buy something used, run it till it dies, and move on to the next car. If you think leasing is for you, then go for it.

I'm no psychic, but I'm willing to guess the 13 year old car was either your first car that you bought on your own and that was all you could afford at the time, or it used to be the family car and was passed down to you after you got your license. In any case, you didn't own that car because you truly wanted it, but because you didn't have much of a choice back then. There's nothing wrong with that, we've all been there before.
Second of all, most of the cars that are 40+ year old and still running around is usually a collector's car. That car will have some value to it. Most of these cars are not daily drivers because it's too valuable to drive around when it'll collect more value if you keep it nice.
Leasing isn't for everyone (my current car isn't a lease) but it actually makes a lot of sense for the majority of people, especially when they trade in cars every 5 years or so. When you lease, you can be driving a car that's worth a lot more than what you can afford if you were to own a car instead.
So whoever told you leasing a car is like renting an apartment doesn't know jack $hit.

Impressions:
After driving this car for 2 days, I have a few comments...
1. stock suspension is really soft (no wonder I upgraded on my XD ).
2. body roll is unreal !!! and UNSAFE ! LOL
3. power is low.. seems like it takes forever to get going....
4. brakes suck...
5. stock tires squeal like a piggy on turns if you just barely push it...
Now I know why I installed the tib rear sway bar, tuscani front strut tower bar... lowering springs, tib front brakes/calipers, and lowering springs + I/H/E ... (on my XD)...
lol

Thats why i recommend that you put your rims/suspension from your xd on to the xd2 before you sell the xd...

This is my g/f's primary car. She wants a smooth ride... regardless of how crappy it handles and stops... =)
We will just have to live with it ...

Do the PCV Bypass/catch mod.
And the list of 5 things you noticed will help keep speeds low thereby increasing you fuel economy.

I only noticed that down here in FL and only on certain areas of pavement. I have no idea what FDOT uses to pave some roads but no matter how fast I'd be going the tires would squeal like a stuck pig. Also the squeal isn't limited to just stock tires, I know I still got it even after I replaced my front tires a while ago.

You know, I installed the stock springs & struts on the XD a couple weekends ago. But I still have the Tib rear sway bar and 16" wheels & tires on it. I had forgotten what it was like. It actually grips decently well right now. Of course the response in transitions is nothing like what it was with the KW coilovers. But the nice thing is the suspension is still so compliant and soft enough to put you to sleep.
It's also incredibly easy to corner at the limit right now because the suspension is so forgiving. I was driving around the other day and I could just fling it around corners sliding the whole way while being very confident in placing the car. I guess once you drive a very stiffly sprung car at the limit, a car like this is easy. But it hasn't lost its fun factor. Of course, if I were to downgrade to the stock rear sway bar, then it would be boring again.
