I was just wondering if there is anyone on exd that is a police officer or aspiring to be one because i am almost 21 and wanted to get all the info I can about it because I am applying to quite a few agencies in my area and I'll be taking quite a few tests?

Although I'm not a cop, I work with a whole lot of them (I work in IS for the city) and my brother is finishing up his criminal justice degree as well. A couple of my friends are cops too. I might be able to answer a question or two about application processes through what I know.
The biggest thing that will get your application thrown out is if you aren't 100% honest... don't omit anything, don't put down any 'extra' credentials. It will be found out, and if you didn't state it upfront, you're chances of being hired are gone.

I've got a degree in Criminal Justice. Being a police woman was never my goal. I'm still not sure what I want to do when I grow up. In college, they did mock oral boards. I couldn't stop laughing long enough to get through one question.

your going to take a civil service exam first, just like postal workers do. then they will put you through an interview, i dont know about cincinatti, but saginaw co. in michigan did a written and an oral interview. after it is reviewed and your backround check is complete they will send you to thier acadamy where you will learn all about being a cop in ohio. First off though before you even apply you need to build up your resume; usually when agencies hire, they hire in mass so you really need to stick out maybe do some community service as a voulnteer before you go so you can plug that in there. best of luck to you man...i actually know a cop in ohio i can ask him for more info specific to the state.

Our process is this:
1st you file a pre-application along with $15. It is reviewed by the police & fire commission along with background checks. If you pass the background checks then:
You are called to complete a full resume and take the written and oral tests. Based on the results of the test all applicants of acceptible results are ranked. then:
However many people they are hiring (lets say 3 officers right now) are offered the job by ranking. If they accept, they are sent to the academy and if they pass that they become an officer. If they decline, they are removed from the list and the next person is called.
If they need another officer(s) 2 months down the road, they go by the same list. The list is good for (I think) one year. At which time they retest and start over again.
In towns in IL with a population under a certain size (I believe 5000) there is no police & fire commission, meaning the chief may hire whomever he wishes, without any official testing process. (They still need to complete the academy though)
