: OEM Floor mats Suck
ilanpro 07-26-2004, 11:41 AM Only 6 month old and look
http://www.nitrousworld.com/pictures/P1010578.JPG
I got a brand new set in my closet in case I enter any shows
Mine are two years old and look better than that.
watson80 07-26-2004, 12:06 PM Mine are almost 3 yrs old and look better than that! I guess its all how you care for them and what you do with your car.
Jlivan 07-26-2004, 12:09 PM I have no mats! How much did you pay for the elantra mats? I looked on Hyundaiusa.com and they had them listed for $85, was wondering if they were cheaper somewhere else.
ilanpro 07-26-2004, 12:11 PM Got them From Jay $65
kylemorg 07-26-2004, 12:34 PM I got mats with the car, and the driver's side looked like that after 6 months, too. I complained to the dealer and got new ones. Of course, they gave me a song-and-dance that the floormats are "wear and tear" items, but when I talked to the service manager, they finally decided to replace them out of "goodwill."
The second set I got from them lasted over two years without wearing out like that. They may just have had a bad run of floormats or changed suppliers. The second set was cut slightly differently than the first, and the Elantra logo was different (I think the first set said "Elantra GT" on them).
jameswing 07-26-2004, 02:05 PM I have a cheep rubber mats that I put over them if I have been walking through anything real abbrasive, or if i'm going somewhere that I know I'll be doing a lot of shifting, and moving my feet.
Leviathant 07-26-2004, 05:18 PM I wore a hole right through the heel under the clutch pedal on my OEM mats. I'd like to get replacements, but $85 is ludicrous. So instead I tacked on some leftover carpet from when my parents put carpets in their basement. It looks pretty ghetto, but it was quick and inexpensive and does the job fine until I find a decent set on eBay or something.
jameswing 07-26-2004, 05:25 PM I saw some nice looking ones somewhere that were ~$50 and they had a extra peice of carpet for the heal, and they were cut just like the stockers, even with the little hole for the retiner. I wish I had bookmarked that page. I'll try to find it. I think it wass from a link either here or on GTclub.
Onelove5683 07-26-2004, 05:29 PM ilan u wearin heals man??
SWortham 07-26-2004, 05:49 PM Yeah mine look that bad after almost 2 years & 20K miles.
Next time I'll get kevlar floor mats thank you very much. Hmm.. I wonder if they make such a thing.
BlackElantraGT 07-26-2004, 05:54 PM Mine are about 2 years old, almost 50K miles and here's what it looks like. These are some crappy floor mats.
watson80 07-26-2004, 07:10 PM You all made fun of me because of the ugly rugs I have over my mats, but look who is laughing now. My mats are like brand new! Get something to go over your mats and save them!
watson80 07-26-2004, 07:13 PM steel mesh floor mats
BlackElantraGT 07-26-2004, 08:10 PM steel mesh floor mats
That would be way too slippery.
04 elantra cvvt 07-27-2004, 12:55 AM Mine are almost a year old, and they look fine. I guess it's all in how you drive the car.
04Elantra 07-27-2004, 03:20 AM mine are 7 months old and still look new (but I covered mine!) :)
ilanpro 07-27-2004, 09:26 AM I do Drive alot 16k miles already but my GLS had 53k and no problems with the mats, but it was automatic.
watson80 07-27-2004, 09:34 AM get on of those shower mats that rubber will protect the carpet. Then just pull it out and hose it clean!
BlackElantraGT 07-28-2004, 09:21 PM I do Drive alot 16k miles already but my GLS had 53k and no problems with the mats, but it was automatic.
For those who are claiming that their mats are fine, are they even considering that the reason why ours are wearing like this is because we have a manual?
04 elantra cvvt 07-28-2004, 09:57 PM I do have a 5 speed. And after 8 months, they are fine.
DocRxGLS 07-29-2004, 05:05 AM I feel your pain guys. I have had my 03' 5-speed for a little over nine months, and had two good holes where both of my heels rest. I was wanting some replacements, and wanted a more permanant solution than replacing mats like oil filters every so often.
I frequent the Elantra GT club every now and then, and they have a link to a company that custom makes mats to your specifics (color, edging, logos / test, and thank goodness, a heel pad!!!). One of their members had already went through two OEM's when he decided to give this company a try. Here is the review at EGT:
http://www.elantragtclub.com/id328.html
I really did not care for the text, so I decided to get some without it. I have gray interior, so I got charcoal mats with black serging edges, and a black heel pad. They came quickly and fit great! It looks great with my tibby pedals. I would post some pics, but my palm does not take very high resolution photos, and my brother is out west on vacation, so no other option for now - sorry. They are a little pricey, but they are really high quality, and you can get exactly what you want. Since my drivers side was all that needed replacing, I only got a set for the front. You need to take the hook off that the stock mats have (only drawback I can think of), but the backing of these new ones are a really thin foam layer that will not slide. If that is not enough, it comes with a clip and a hook that goes through the carpet to keep them from sliding (not needed, but another option). I have had mine now almost three weeks, and they still look like the day I bought them. The heel pad is a really coarse and thick low profile carpet. Definately think they were worth the money.

Just go to design your mats, and have a ball.
Well, I tried my palm for a photo. Not the greatest....

jameswing 07-29-2004, 12:00 PM Those are the ones that I was thinking about.
watson80 07-29-2004, 12:03 PM I have a manual that is also why I threw extra rugs in!
JacksonJ 07-29-2004, 12:05 PM I have a 5-speed, that's why I got the Rubber mats. Actually that's what they gave me in the car. I just haven't taken them out.
kylemorg 07-29-2004, 06:42 PM I have a five speed as well, and the second set of mats I got lasted two years, but my first set (that came with the car new and were cut slightly differently) wore out, which is why I think that there are at least two OEM suppliers of mats. One of them is fine, the other wears out.
One thing I thought of doing with the first set was to get a black rubber pad and some upholstery needles and sew the pad to the top of the factory mat with some heavy-duty thread to cover the holes. They would have ended up looking similar to the ones above in DocRxGLS's post.
SilverElantra03 07-29-2004, 06:56 PM the soles of my dress shoes have really hard soles and they tore up my mats really bad!
04 elantra cvvt 07-30-2004, 01:23 AM Maybe that's why mine have lasted the way they have. I always wear tennis shoes.
ilanpro 07-30-2004, 01:58 AM I wear snickers too I do have 16K miles
Gregster 07-30-2004, 08:42 AM I wear snickers too I do have 16K miles

04 elantra cvvt 07-30-2004, 09:19 AM :abovelol: Keep in mind that he posted that around 1 a.m. last night.
Jlivan 07-30-2004, 09:25 AM @ 1 AM You start getting hungry I guess!
werfu 08-01-2004, 12:43 PM Why not a nice embossed polished stainless steel plate? My cousin have replaced his front floor mat in his Civic for these. It was looking awesome and it wasn't to slipping even wet or with snow on it.
kylemorg 08-01-2004, 05:27 PM If you could find a good way to attach a stainless steel plate, that would look nice. Now that you mention it, I've noticed that APC sells a diamond-plate aluminum piece with their logo embossed in color for use on car footwells/floormats, too.
RonnieSan 08-03-2004, 06:51 PM Mines got a hole at the heel also.
watson80 08-04-2004, 01:00 AM once again I go back to my trusty old ugly rugs I thruin. My mats and carpet ae perfect!!
Your mats may be perfect but noone could see them under those ugly rugs. I understand wanting to keep everything nice and new but at least take them out for pics.
watson80 08-04-2004, 01:43 PM true i will admit defeat on that 1
Seinster 08-25-2004, 09:46 PM if you got the stainless steel plate, you could fix up a design on skateboard grip for no-slippage issues and wow factor.
mrhoaf 02-01-2005, 03:27 PM bringing an old thread back from the dead.....
I've been thinking about getting a set of floor mats from Weathertech (http://www.weathertech.com/store/vehsearch.asp?make_id=22&year_no=2001&veh_id=286&item_group_id=3&veh_opt_choice_id=0) .
I'd probably just get black... and fronts only. The reason I would go with these is that they are supposed to be designed specifically for the car..... I could grab a set at walmart, but I want them to actually fit right.
Anybody have these in their XD? Thoughts? Opinions?
GTSTISL 02-01-2005, 03:30 PM ehh i dont really like the design, but as far as keeping nice lookin mats, they look real good.
mrhoaf 02-01-2005, 03:40 PM I'm not going for looks...... this car is NEVER going to be in a show...lol....
This is for practical purposes.... the old mats don't stay in place very well anymore, and they often get wet with the snow and such here.... tired of the car starting to stink from wet carpet after a string of wet days.....
With these the water will just dry in the channels, plus you can just hose them off when they get dirty.....
JacksonJ 02-01-2005, 04:14 PM If you look at the pictures shown below it looks as if there is no cut out for the Trunk release/Gas release.
Leviathant 02-01-2005, 06:13 PM Bet it doesn't have a hole for the hook that keeps your mats from sliding, either.
mrhoaf 02-01-2005, 06:49 PM my car doesn't have either hooks anymore anyway... those cheap pieces of crap broke off in the first couple months..... Great idea, very poorly executed....
I am a bit concerned about the fact that they don't appear to have the cutout for the gas/trunk release.....
JacksonJ 02-01-2005, 07:09 PM The stock Rubber mats don't have the spot for the hooks either. I've always thought about making a hole so I don't have to constantly adjust it from getting under the clutch pedal.
KeWLKaT 02-01-2005, 07:56 PM I got some pantsavers... they work wonders.
These are the astrel mats I had fitted by the dealer. I can replace the black heel pad cheap, the rest of the mats seem fairly thick and sturdy. The hole is obviously for the retaining stud which I have found to be a great thing, I HATE having a mat bunch up under the pedal. These arent cheap I think they are atleast $80+ AUD and I am sure the custom tailored mats available at auto accessory places here that have a one piece mat for the rear passengers is a similar price.
SuperGLS 02-01-2005, 10:14 PM The stock Rubber mats don't have the spot for the hooks either. I've always thought about making a hole so I don't have to constantly adjust it from getting under the clutch pedal.
Stock rubber mats? Huh? Are you talking about the other OEM all black rubber ones? I don't think they are stock (well, at least not in the U.S.).
Charles Bisel 02-01-2005, 10:20 PM Damn, those are worn out! Mine are dirty as hell from all of the snow/ice/salt this winter, but as far as I can tell, the entire mat is still covered with carpet.
I'm also doing as you and getting an extra set of OEM GT mats for show.
vsolo 02-01-2005, 10:24 PM I do Drive alot 16k miles already but my GLS had 53k and no problems with the mats, but it was automatic.
Must be the high heels
JacksonJ 02-02-2005, 05:58 AM Yes Super, I am talking about OEM all black rubber mats, when I bought my car they came with it. Maybe because I bought mine in the winter time. I didn't specify to get them, and they certainly were not on the options list. The ones I got are for the elantra and have the H logo in the middle. Of course right now they are completely covered in salt.
MrGisriel 02-03-2005, 09:29 PM My car (2001 gls) is better than that.... have you ever used a preasure washer on them???? That is what happens....I know from another car.
-MrGisriel
02ChiantiGT 02-12-2005, 09:35 PM We have an 02 GT and we are on our second set or mats. These are almost worn thru though. If you look on ebay you can get a good deal. I got these mats for $20 brand new about a year ago.Another idea is buy new mats then go to walmart and get those clear plastic mets to put over them. I think they are $15 or cheaper(not sure, but I know cheaper than $15.It really saves the mats and your not dishing out all that money for new mats.
KeWLKaT 02-12-2005, 11:14 PM the only reason the mats are wearing out is because of people (like me) afraid of using the clutch pedal properly, and keeping the heel on the floor instead of having the whole foot in the air... Since the pedal goes is deep, there is great friciton between the heel and the pad. That times 45968 clutch pedal presses a day= a lot of wear.
steel mesh floor mats
Easy to clean though. Just take 'em to a hose and spray.
Leviathant 02-17-2005, 06:01 PM I took my car to the Cloister Car Wash (I know, I know, but whatever) and one of the dudes there ripped my driver's side floor mat hook right out of the carpet. That really irked me, I loved the way the mat didn't slip under my pedals.
Any suggestions on rigging that back together? I'm thinking of sticking a metal ruler (or something) where the hole is, and attaching the hook to that, but I have a vague recollection of trying that before with little success.
Argh.
SuperGLS 02-18-2005, 12:36 AM There has to be a way to install another OEM hook, somehow.
4mynikka 02-18-2005, 10:02 AM I'll be getting MOMO mats for the car soon.... my mats look like they've been through the dumps....
Jlivan 02-18-2005, 10:32 AM The rubber mats are ok, I rather have carpet mats though. For not having mats in my car it's not that dirty. I might have to use some cleaner for some heel marks I did a couple weeks ago though.
What are you doing to your mats to make them look like that? I had my last car for 5 years and the mats never looked that bad.
BobMs_wht2k2 02-18-2005, 10:44 AM Maybe I'm missing something here, but isn't the point of a floor mat to take the abuse and wear rather than the carpet? mine aren't that bad, but they are showing a bit of wear. 36,000 miles with the 5spd. I don't know 'bout y'all, but I would rather replace $85 mats than a $400 carpet.
Just my .02
mrhoaf 02-18-2005, 10:48 AM There has to be a way to install another OEM hook, somehow.
unless the carpet is ripped, you should be able to buy another hook form the dealership and snap it in place.......
if just the hook snapped off of the base, you'd need to take it off first....
Leviathant 02-18-2005, 12:01 PM That's just it. The carpet is ripped. Ugh.
