With my 2005 GLS sedan, im presently doing 4000 mile oil/filter changes using
Castrol GTX Start UP 5W-30 and OEM Hyundai filter. I plan on doing this
faithfully for my hope to make it to about 165,000 miles doing all the scheduled
maintenance faithfully.
So, what, if any, would be the advantages of switching to full synthetic oil,
like a Mobil 1, Royal Purple, etc?
My trusty mechanic tells me if I stick to 4000 OCI's with the forementioned
Castrol and make sure all the maintenance is done on time, using a synthetic
will NOT be off any advantage. The Elantra engine will still be just as clean.

Thoughts??

There have been so many of these posts lately.

There might be more...

I'm sure there are more, but common sense isn't his forte.

Look, the synthetic/dino oil is a personal preference. For every study that says one thing, you can one saying the opposite. You might as well ask what color is best and why. You'll never get a straight answer, but I'm guessing that's what you thrive on anyway. Gotta have a little controversy.

BobMs,

I really think I agree with you on this.....if im doing 4000 OCI with Castrol
GTX Start Up 5W-30 and OEM filter, I would bet I can get to 165000 miles
just as easily as I would with any synthetic, with the engine being just as
clean, i would think...particularly since I am a very light, easy driver!

I do have a question for you BobMs... I was always wondering about this.
My dealer uses what ever oil they can get the cheapest..sometimes Mobil,
sometimes Kendall, etc. Does that really matter through the life of the car
when the dealer uses all different types of oil brands? Or does it make no
difference? What does your dealership use?

Let's see, you loved calling me out and having a good time trying to rip me a new one, and now you want my opinion?

4000 miles on any SM/ GF4 oil will keep your engine from having any oil related problems, dino, blend or syn.
As for brand switching, not a problem either.

For that matter, following the recommended 7500 mile schedule would do the same thing. Changing oil more often than necessary is a waste of a finite resource and does nothing but increase oil company profits.

Yes Bnystrom, I was thinking about going that route too. But since I do drive a fair
amount of short trips, I was thinking of splitting the difference of 3750 and 7500 and
doing 5600 mile changes and be done with it.

why the hell would you leave ur oil in for 7500 miles?

because that's what Bnystrom says...
like many other oil posts, he doesn't seem to understand everyone's (pretty much) "normal" driving is considered severe in Hyundai's books.
Some people are stuck in their views though.
Let's let it go cypher... ;) he knows  lol

but I do agree, if you don't drive in stop and go traffic, or do any longer than normal idleing, or any hills, or on gravel roads, or have any sort of winter, than don't change your oil until 7500 miles.

Having said that:

Nodule,
I highly doubt that all you drive is highway/interstate in perfect pristine weather conditions, but if you do...you know when you should change your oil.

Well, I do, but I am one of the few who is not in the severe catagory.
While I do agree that 3000 miles is short and a waste except for the most extreme conditions, 4-5000 miles would work for most, especially if your using synthetic.

No, because that's what Hyundai recommends. They know more about their engines than any of us ever will. Also, keep in mind that their recommended oil change intervals are for regular oils. It would take some seriously extreme driving to truly need to change synthetic oil at the "severe" intervals or anything close to it.

Utter BS. Sure, some people do legitimately fall into the "severe" category and should change their oil more often, but that's hardly "everyone". Getting stuck in traffic once in a while doesn't qualify as "severe" driving.

Well it started out looking like you might make some sense, but you quickly reverted to nonsense. So close, but yet so far...

It all depends on your specific situation, the best route to go is to get an oil analysis done, I use synthetic oil in my car and although my driving habits do not need to be placed in the severe catagory I do need to change it out every 4-5k because the oil analysis indicated I have heavy fuel dialution (short driving trips and maybe pcv valve needs to be replaced) and that the oil was oxidizing/wearing faster than normal, and considering those factors synthetic is probably not right for me (waste of money for need of a short oci) and I would be better off using conventional or semi-syn oil considering the short oci.
