View Full Version : This will make you cry for sure....
Hello, im new here, im reading everything on the forum since... 2 years now
So here the car: Hyundai Elantra GL 2002
The story is that my father was driving this car, when he tryed to overpass the car in front of him, he did from 5th speed to 2nd at 60 miles per hours, sure it was an accident, the car stopped... But restarted after a few trys. We went to the garage, one of the "cent" on a piston got away from it. So we replaced it, but the "cent" we use is
bigger than the original one, so it makes a wierd noise of "ticks" under the hood
Hear by yourself: (btw, this car had almost no maintenance, so it looks bad  )

We are about to change the tranny (which is in a bad status now  ) and the motor , for a 2003 GT one.

sorry for my bad english, but its like a round plate of maybe 1 cm of diameter which is on the piston.

if you speak french go ahead, I'll translate it in english for you! :D
It's hard to understand what you mean as the piston is inside the engine ... maybe your talking about the spark plug ???
EDIT : here is a picture of the engine, maybe you could point to what part you talk about ???

Probably dropped a valve trying to rev the engine that high.

lollll
yeah that's an engine valve, the garage replaced it or you father replaced it???
cause if it's a too long valve in there it's not a good thing ... at all!

there are shims that go in the tappet for the valve. you clearance should be on the Intake valves .17-.23mm, Exhaust valves .25-.31mm. you can order shim from the dealer.

Seems to me that one of your valves is knocking one of the pistons or that the lifter (refering to the one pushing that valve ) have exploded......they're Hydraulic. Because of it's lenght (refering to the valve stem) unless youre stating that the "cent" is the diameter of the valve thus not sitting very well in the head every time it opens and closes. Any of the above will make a similar sound to the one in the clip. Difference will be that two of the mentioned problems will make your car feel like a landmower (vibrating as it iddles and a noticieable lack of power), the other one will be just the noise (loss of power not something that you will notice that much)
Did that engine have oil? Maybe the oil pump is clogged too. Advise find a low mileage engine it will be cheaper than fixing that unless youre planing to do it yourself.

Thanks, yea the engine is alway having a good oil level, But its still drives the same way than before
(not like a landmower) the idle is ok, no shaking, no big power loss (maybe 2-5 hp).
we just got 110 000 kms on it, the other engine that we will swap with is only having 65 000 kms.
Also, the seconds gear is grinding when we try to shift too fast, we must wait like 2 seconds before shifting. Some says that its the clutch, some say thats its the gears.

for the shifting, it's neither of what you mentionned ... if you have to wait to put it in gear it's the synchro ...

60mph in 2nd gear is right on the red line. Valve shouldn't bend à 6750RPM even if the car is 4 years old.

ha...ive never seen that. so what happens? you guys type in french, and software translates it, but if its not able to translate (typo, misspelled) it just leaves it be?
jalmir

nope, sometimes it's the brain that forgets to process some words!
bend à 6750RPM
"à" is the french for "at" ... hehe he justed typed "à" when his brain thought "at", happens to me sometimes but I always saw it when I read myself! ;)

09-07-2006, 03:43 PM
gotcha...
so how do you guys type out letters that have accent marks on them? different keyboards??
jalmir
09-07-2006, 04:11 PM
yup ...
Canadian CSA Keyboard :
http://catalogs.activis.ca/clients/beaujoie_com/photos/35_large.jpg
The key maps are not the same, right now I have a regular US keybord with CND french mapping, so the accent letters are not on it, but when your used to it, it's easy to find them! ;)
In europe the keyboard map is a lot more different then US/CND english vs French CND ... we are in QWERTY (the 6 first letters on the first row) and europe is in AZERTY (so the letters aren't at the same place at all!!!) the disadvantage is that when you install any OS in french, it considers that your in France, so your keyboard will be mapped in AZERTY ... I can tell you that the first time it happens your lost! lolll
well, ok.. gotta admit that i think it was more than 60 mph, maybe around 70-75
BTW, c'est plaisant de savoir que je suis pas le seul Québecois ici :)
