Ok everyone, I know I'm tapping into the stereotype that girls don't know much about cars (and I know that alot of you do!!!!!! please don't be offended) But I personally don't know too much because my ex-boyfriend has been fixing my cars for me since I started driving....now we are no longer able to be friends and therefore I needed to find other means of repairs. Can anyone tell me what type and how much oil I need for an oil change and what type of oil filter? I have a 2001 elantra gls.
I know I should know all this but alas....I do not and anyone that could tell me I would greatly appreciate it. This is my first day on this site and I've heard many great things!!! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

no more than 4 quarts of oil, i use full synthetic (you don't have to) 5w30 and you can pick up a filter at any autozone, advanced auto, etc.

Thanks for the help...do you happen to know the number of the filter? That's the part that I really don't want to mess up :p

they have books in those stores for you to look it up, or just ask the person at the desk.

Your owners manual also has a section on DIY maintance items. If you can I would use a Hyundai filter, but any aftermarket will work, just stay away from the Fram filters as they have been linked to pressure loss issues with our engines. Also welcome to the site.

Funny how when a male asks a noob question the reply seems to be "Use the SEARCH button"
But a female asks a noob question and you get a 2-page thread and a few proposals to pop open her hood and check her fluids.
No wonder all the other girls aren't around anymore :)

Welcome to the site Dizzy! I didn't know how to change the oil until my husband taught me with the Elantra. Once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy so don't feel discouraged!
