OK, I am really pissed.
Heres what happened:
I register both cars for insurance.
They need the ownership for the Hyundai as well as pictures, but I'm not told about the ownership from a insurance rep., I'm told from my father (who has done this many times before).
I send both.
They have to inspect my Hyundai.
The inspection revels I have some aftermarket equipment in the car, about $1,000 worth.
I call to make sure they got all the documents, and they have.
They tell me they can't cover the equipment I have in the vehicle if I don't show receipts, I say fine, and the vechicle is covered without the modifications. They say I'm good to go with full coverage.
This all happened in April.
Then I get in the mail a couple days ago and letter dated July19 saying that my policy is CANCELLED for two reasons:
1. failure to provide ownership for the hyundai.
2. receipts/invoices for aftermarket equipment.
AS OF AUGUST 4TH!

I'm like WTF??!!!
I'm so damn pissed. I talk to them, and they say "that's our policy, but I can re-insure you if you have your documents (receipts and ownership)". And of course, it doesn't say on the letter, but both vehicles are cancelled.
I don't have ANY recepts of ANY kind.

I'm pissed and up the creek without a paddle.
Does anyone have any idea of what I should do?

Do you have any hard documentation of the April conversation, i.e. policy papers or written record of phone convo etc? I have come to the conclusion that when dealing with the insurance companies the best policy is to treat them like crack whores... Record everything in writing because you can't trust any of them. If you don't then I'm afraid you are screwed my man take your business elsewhere.

I don't have a record of the phone conversation.
The only thing I have is the documents they sent me when I first registered.
Which doesn't help me a whole lot.

Yeah, this is kinda why everyone hides their mods from their insurance company. The biggest thing about them here is that any mods to your car can void insurance. Hence why I am totally scared out of my mind if a cop ever pulls me over. All they have to do is check the car, call the ins and say, "excuse me but did you know Johanne has $xxx worth and these mods attached to her vehicle......oh you didn't huh....ah, just wanted to let you know." Then I would get in the mail cancelled insurance. I have my stereo insured but they warned me if I did any more, ie. rims, body kit that they would no longer be able to insure me because the car is just calling for attention from theives. I believe a notice went around as well from some ins. co's stating that mods done to suspension automatically cancels insurance.

In your case....hmmm...You obviously have the ownership papers on both vehicles. I keep photocopies of everything I send to my insurance and call them after I send them a fax confirming they received it, so I know what they do and don't have and can back it up. You obviously have confirmed that or you would not have gone ahead staying with them since then. You might be able to write a letter to them (letters go a long way by the way) and state, "on such and such a date we had discussed the situation involving receipts that were not provided on the vehicle and the vehicle was deemed insured minus mods (or so to speak). My modifications are xx years old and the receipts have since been destroyed/I don't have access to them. I had also sent my ownership and confirmed with you that all these documents were received. I am willing to take the risk - maybe not the appropriate words but you know what I mean, of not having the modifications insured on the vehicle, but am not willing to have the car not insured when it was agreed upon in April that everything was ok. Do you have model numbers or anything from your mods? That might be better than nothing....or ask if you can have it appraised.

An understanding letter at the moment might be the best way to go, that clearly defines your intentions. Indicate also that you are forwarding that letter to the head office (if you are dealing through a broker or something). That way the situation is definetly looked at and reviewed.

If your insurance is cancelled anyway - well then...I haven't done as much research on that as I should. Cancelled insurance will go on your record I believe and that information cannot be withheld when applying for new insurance. How easy will it be to get new insurance?...I honestly don't know. I have currently been in the high risk market since 1999 and it's not easy to find places that will insure me just because I had incidents that year. I also pay a fine penny for the one I'm with, who happens to be the lowest in my searching.

My ins. co. indicated that if I do continue to mod the car and make it a show car that I will have to apply for show car insurance. It's really expensive but perhaps that might be your only way out.

Keep us up to date on this...and good luck.

Your insurance companies are gay. Maybe that's just a Canada thing, but I've never had to have a vehicle inspection, provide a modification list, or submit photos of my car. Secondly, I've never even heard of anyone having to do that... but as I said, maybe that's just a Canada thing.

Well, maybe its a canadian policy, but here, if the car is over 10years old, it must be inspected before its insured.

Nope, not a policy here. Every car I had before my Elantra was over 10 years old... never once had an inspection. Sorry to hear your troubles.

I only had to have pictures taken of a car once and it was when I had my Prelude and it was 10 years old and I had full coverage on it with Mercury Insh. I have progressive now and can make all of my policy changes online, and they haven't asked for pictures of any of the three cars I have insured with them.

Get another Insurance company

Before I got married, my parents switched Insurance companies and the new one wanted to take pictures of my old car themselves. I never got down to the insurance company and they never cancelled it either.

Alot of companies up here are asking for pics, etc. The one I'm with now (second time I'm with them by the way) scheduled an inspection day/time with me to take a look at the car and take pics. They didn't when I was with them a couple years ago. Basically it's to protect the company against fraud. But if I switch companies, I'll likely be asked to have another inspection.....doesn't have to be 10 years old either....this happened with my other old car too. They mark down any dents in your car, etc. that you would want to claim under the policy...it's for their own protection....hence why I kept all my stocker stuff like bumpers...to throw on if they ever decide to spring a surprise on me.

If I remember correctly you said that you are friends with the guy that built the motor for your car correct? Why not get some "receipts" from him?

I just called him actually about an hour ago.
He will be my backup plan, b/c I have to pay him the tax on the receipts he's gonna write me.
Plan A: convince them to put me back on not covering the mods (which is what I asked for in the first place).
Plan B: get receipts from my mechanic for the stuff.
Plan C: get the car appraised and pay a high premium (not likely I will choose this)
Plan D: screw everything and sell the car.

I know that.

Why don't you just try and go with another company?
I don't know what mods you have, but would it be possiable to hide them when they asked for an inspection.

PS.

Blame Canada! Blame Canada! It's true :) j/k

jameswing:

First, I can try and go with another company, but the likelyhood they will insure me is very slim after I receive a "INSURANCE CANCELLED" status on my record.
This status makes me a "high risk", so many companies will not insure you because this marks you with a big red flag. The companies that will, will charge you rates so high you can't afford it.

Second, I can't hide my mods from the inspection because the guys doing it are "supposed" to know what they are looking for. And in fact, they have a list of "typical" mods done that they particularly look for. When I did the inspection, the guy had a list with pictures of an exhaust, intake, pedals, etc.

If you wanna hear something stupid:
When I went to the inspection the guy didn't have a clue about what I did to the car. He took a look at it and said "is that factory paint?", "did you change the body at all?"
Then he took a look inside and said "Oh, you have racing pedals!"
He already saw my muffler, so he wrote that down.
He asked me to lift the hood. Took a look at my engine and said "did you do any major upgrades?" (the turbo is sitting right in front of his face)
I said "no, just an intake" (peaking at his picture on his clipboard)
He said "ok". Just disgarding my front-mount greddy intercooler and 2.5" piping coming from my manifold and running through the front of the car.
And that was pretty much it.
The guy ended up paying more attention to the Razo covers I had on my pedals than my jdm motor swap and turbo. What a goof. :headshake

Anyway, its not the mods giving me a problem. I orginally asked for the car to be insured without covering the mods. Which is what they told me I would be paying for. Then they go and cancel me with 4 days notice b/c I didn't declare the mods.

Retards. The whole lot of them. :jerkit:

I understand now. I should have just looked at your signature to see your mods. If the only mods he has noted are exaust, intake, and peddles then your list looks good and only get recipts for these items.

OK. After stressing all day at work... calling 50+ brokers... and trying to talk with insurance company...
here's where I am...
They somehow didn't get my ownership, so I faxed it to them today.
I will get a buddy of mine to write me up some receipts and I will provide it to them.
The manager I talked with didn't get to talk in depth to the insurance company about the car, so I have to wait until tuesday.
So I'm crossing my fingers until tuesday morning.
Any prayers and good wishes are welcome guys/gals. I'm gonna need it if I want to see my car on the road again. :(

So, kinda a little off topic.... but what if you sold your car to someone, then they tried to insure it without the receipts - cause you never had them to give to the buyer? Just wondering. Good luck.

Great new guys!
After a lot of bs and run-arounds, I got to the right people and the car WILL BE INSURED! :D  :)

All I have to do is produce receipts for my pedals (because pedals make you faster and cause you to steet race  ), my exhuast, and my rims.
And I have to produce these by tomarrow. I think I'll be good. I got my buddy to hook me up, I just gotta pay tax on them. A little bit of cash I won't get to see, but o well, small price to pay for getting my eclipse and my elantra on the road. :D

Good news. Thanks for keeping us updated.

It's funny about the pedals though.

Sheesh, I know. Buncha yahoo's. :kick:
AND my insurance went down...
And do you want to know why?
Because despite me telling them the elantra is NOT my daily driver (100+ times), it was set as my daily. :(
So I got them to change it, and it went down $15! :D
Again, I say. Morons.
