View Full Version : Quite cat-back exhaust possible?

I am trying to add the few bolt ons which will open up the engine with a little more power. I plan on a CAI or SRI which I can remove quickly for warranty repair.
My question is....is there a cat-back exhaust which will be only a little louder than the stock exhaust? I would really like to keep the sleeper effect and not advertise any modifications. Most of the elantras I see around me sound similar to a civic with exhaust which I am not after, I would rather have it quiet like stock.
My next question is about the CARB number on exhaust systems, would this qualify as an OEM replacement and hence not void the warranty? I have read about the warranty stuff in the threads on these forums and when doing upgrades and I know it is a weird issue and pretty much any dealer will try and tell you something broke because of your upgrades.
THANKS for any help, ordering some parts in the near future and I would like some insight.

For quiet sound exhaust, get inline resonators/glasspacks in the middle section.

So basically it would be a custom exhaust either way, having a local shop cut the exhaust pipes properly and welding in the resonators/glasspacks, and if I wanted to bring it into the dealer for Warranty work I would have to get the stock exhaust put back in......UGH!!!
Thanks for the input!!!
Other then the headers throwing a constant CEL, I, in NO WAY can think how an exhaust will void the warrenty. Either do what kewl said and go with resonators/glasspacks or look for a muffler that is straight-threw muffler that is quieter.
Honestly, I recommend the Magnaflow mufflers, I have one and its honestly not really that loud unless your on it at WOT, and it is extreamly pleasent at cruising speeds (cant even hear it around 70)

umm strait through = sound...
get a turbo style (that does an S inside) muffler. Dynomax is a good brand.

I have a Dynamax Turbo muffler for sale that is direct bolt on to the axleback section and has stock turn down so it doesnt stick out. It sounded very nice on my car with the stock exhaust, a little louder, a little more power. But i went for alot louder eventually. let me know if your interested.

that ARK cat back is somewhat quite...it has a resonator and a straight threw...the only time its louder is when your on it! and it has a sweet sound...this is the one i plan on picking up.
just for refference a straight threw muffler does not deaden any sound...so a chamber muffler would be the way to go for a quite exhaust...even though the ARK is straight threw the glasspack does the majority of the dampening of the exhaust pulse.

That's not true. When i was installing my magnaflow muffler i figgured the same thing must be true so i held up the muffler to my mouth and screamed into it. it killed alot of the sound. Then again i did have the silencer in at the time. either way i would probably go with a custom system comprising of a high flow resonator like a magnaflow or something simmilar. something strait thru. 2 1/4 pipe all the way back. then i'd look for a "stock replacement" type muffler and oversize the crap outta it, like 2.5"-3". its not gonna flow as good as a aftermarket system. but it should flow nice and be fairly quiet.
