I'm going to drain my tranny (automatic) fluid and install fresh sp-3 in my '03 elantra, does anyone know the torque spec on the drain plug?

There is no drain plug, at least thats what I'm told. You should follow my DIY for the flush.

You must have gotten the motor oil drain plug washer. The transmission does not have a drain plug. I asked several people from Hyundai and they tell me there is not a true drain plug for it.

No drain plug, jus drop the pan and do it that way.

Not easy to do. The pan is on the side of the transmission and you need to jack up the tranny to clear it from the front crossmember.

I looked again today i still don't see a drain plug the only way i see it is that you just take off the pan but from there i don't know what else you have to do when it come to are car.

Pulling the pan is more work than it is worth. I know, tried that route on my car. For 1 thing, there is NO gasket available, only RTV is used and you must move the radiator hose, cooler lines and jack up the tranny just to clear the front crossmember, which is in the way of getting the pan off.

I suggest getting 18 quarts of SP-III fluid, unhooking the return cooler line, putting that in a 5 gallon bucket and pour 15 quarts in the dipstick tube as the fluid runs out (engine running and in gear) into the bucket.

I changed the tranny fluid today, there is no pan on the bottom of the tranny just a magnetic drain plug. I removed the plug, drained out abought 7-8 qts of oil and cleaned the magnet, put on the new washer and filled her up...the plug is on the bottom of the tranny case, were you whould think the pan would be.(its a 24 mm. drain plug) I was told it's a chore to change the filter, you have to split the tranny case to change it (stupid design). as long as you drain the fluid every 30k it should be fine

Please post pictures where that drain plug is. I was told by both dealers and in class that there is no drain plug.

I'm beginning to lose faith in some of you. there is a drain plug torque it the same as you would the oil drain plug maybe slightly more.

well they are all wrong I wouldn't trust a tech or instructor that would tell you that.

the service manual even tells you there is a drain plug.

Which *bolt* is it? On mine, there is 3 similar sized bolts next to each other. I'm not about to pull a *drain plug* without some concrete evidence that it *does* exist. A manual (to me) is only 1 piece. I need multiple pieces from the manufacturer noting it is there. Who knows, there might be something behind that bolt that it is holding. I looked on webtech, and my book, it does not show a location for it. On the 2004 and 2005 model year manuals, it does not say there is a drain plug. Since there is more than 1 bolt on the bottom, that particular one should be shown. Also, my book and webtech also show a filter on top of the transmission, and on mine, there is no servicable filter. Those were on the 2000 Sonata and the 2001 XG, not the XD. To me, the manual is not that accurate. There has been updates to the trans and the manuals don't reflect the updates. I know on my car, which was built in May of 2003, there is no filter.

I would rather flush the system rather than doing drain/fills. Since 1. we cannot service the filter, and 2, the torque converter holds 2/3rds of the fluid, getting 100% of the fluid exchanged should be done regularly. Some shops prefer a drain fill, but this does not get all the crap out from the transmission. Since the tranny is very finicky, having clean fluid is a necessity. I also notice that my trans took 5 quarts for a fill, and know that the torque converter should hold almost twice that amount.

well i was told by a tech that there was no drain plug.. and i looked for myself..

i saw 'bolts' but... i too was weary to unbolt anything..

webtech has been wrong before... saying that the 06's have a 'sports' mode... when in fact there is none.. LOL

if only 18 quarts didn't cost like $90... lol
still cheaper that the dealer....

but still.. LOL. ... if there was an easy way with the drain plug.. that would make things so much easier..

is it possible that some DID and some didn't?

I'm not about to *unbolt* something without knowing EXACTLY what that bolt is for. I've taken these apart before, but I'm not going to experiment on someones car without having seen what it holds prior to doing that. Those that I have taken apart, were already toasted by incorrect fluids.

Webtech and the printed shop manual is full of typos. I noticed that the fluid capacity is said to be 7.8 liters, which is just over 8 quarts. I know I used 5 quarts when I pulled my pan. It does not make a whole lot of sense to me to see a torque converter holding only 3 quarts of fluid. It has to hold a lot more fluid than that to work properly. From the size of the converter, I would expect it to hold at least 7 quarts of fluid.

I said 18 quarts for a flush because that is what it takes to exchange all of the fluid. putting 15 quarts through the system flushes it out, then the 3 quarts would be used to fill, if necessary, the trans to the proper level.
