View Full Version : My new Exhaust

Ok, well the car is finally going in on friday for a full exhaust makeover.
http://dblast.lescigales.org/misc/exhaust.jpg
What will be going on:
- New downpipe, with the pyrometer probe bung welded into it (YES I know it's not as effective as putting it in the manifold, but it's a peace of mind thing, aswell as some functionality... big deal if it's 35 deg F off! LOL)
- After that will come the flexpipe, the dynomax highflow cat, the second O2 sensor bung.
- After the strait section will come all the bends and curves, I've got 3 mandrel-bent U-Bends to cover that, followed by the Dynomax turbo-style muffler.
- Also, I will get them to put a flange before the curved part for easier maintenance if I ever have to change a component or whatnot.
NOTE: 2.5" Aluminized Steel.
One cat, one muffler. That's it :D I know that the turbo will quiet things down aswell, I'm not worrying. I can't wait to FINALLY have something that works properly!

Excuse my ignorance, which piece is the cat?
KeWLKaT
09-26-2006, 11:15 AM
The one on the left, with the odd-shaped heatshield, under those two pipes.
I just don't know what to do for the friggin TIP yet!!!!
dang it!
and I am NOT cutting the bumper.... it's either turn-down (sleeper), or a subtle round tip....
fifthgear
09-26-2006, 11:17 AM
OK gotcha. And yea! Don't cut the bumper just for the tip's sake.
KeWLKaT
09-26-2006, 11:25 AM
Yeah, no intentions in cuttage.
Maybe just weld a small curve on it and put a tip that would slightly point towards the bottom (à la hyunelan2)?

09-26-2006, 12:07 PM
mmm very nice, i'm guessing you purchased everything separately and getting a shop to weld it together?

09-26-2006, 12:08 PM
How much did the everything cost? what are u lookin at for Instalation costs?
mtlelantra
09-26-2006, 12:37 PM
For the tip, take a 90 deg bend pipe, but cut it just parallel to the straight part of the pipe just as it starts to bend. The hole opening will be parallel to the pipe, but a wider oval shape and deflect exhaust at an angle.
Sorry, hard to describe... I'll try to attach a pic

You'll probably never need all 3 mandrel bends. I did mine....then redid the rear section with 2 u bends
fifthgear
09-26-2006, 01:48 PM
What are the mandrel bend pieces for?
NY2002ElantraGT
09-26-2006, 02:06 PM
Its prebent pipe for any turns you need to take while routeing the exhaust back... in the xd's case, one for the downpipe, one to go over the axel, and probably one for the tip. Mandrel bent is a special way to bend the pipe so it has the same Diameter all the way through the bend.

Ahh, cool thanks.

I think you should just put a bent piece down. I did that when i got my catback last week and i really like the stock look, but it still had quite a growl. But that's my opinion.
only1db
09-26-2006, 05:12 PM
dude you need a 5 inch outlet!!!
jfwy...i think a turn down would look good being as the muffler will be tucked up under everything.
Munky
09-26-2006, 05:18 PM
just cause they can't see it doesn't mean it isn't there.
the growl is all you need. ;D

Hey everyone!
Sounds good if it only needs 2 bends, I could use the other to make the turndown like mtlelantra said, I actually thought of that today during my modelisation course at school, ha. I actually would like it like that better, that way, just like only1db said, the muffler could be nicely tucked in, not show, and also look more ''stock''. I will be painting the tip flat black just for the hell of it, or maybe polish it... We will see.
For reference, I bought the piping from EXDPERFORMANCE or something else starting with "EXD", that's what struck me, haha. Though the seller is on ebay and is from Canada (which is why I bought from them), each bend was like 14$, very good price!
Total cost until now for all hardware is around 200$. I will see about the installation, he told me something near 300$ but I'm expecting more for the bungs I don't have at the moment and whatnot. So this is basically going to cost around 5-6 if done right, not bad if you ask for a FULL exhaust that's EXACTLY the way I want it :)
BTW I already have the downpipe, it's the wrapped piece in the corner of the picture, hopefully it fits (according to Alpine), if it doesn't... Well... I have EXTRA bends and strait sections and we cant just cut the flange off and do a better job than the not-so-professionally welded cast pipe they sent...
Also, I will be making it in two pieces (extra flanges) so I can take it off when I want to, I already want to ceramic paint the welded parts so they don't rust, or maybe go crazy and paint the whole thing in black ceramic paint to maintain the temps for a higher flow. I actually want to paint the muffler so it'll show less also... Argh.. so much painting... I'll be way over HIGH when that day comes :D:D:D
Can't wait!

w00t !!!!
Dyno time!!! :D
So they DID charged 125$ for the fitting ??? You were with Frank ?
KeWLKaT
10-10-2006, 07:04 PM
^^^
LOL it was 125$ for pre-bent OEM exhaust!
I did pay a GOOD price and have promised not to tell a soul about the deal I got because they had a major fux0r misunderstanding and I ended up paying MUCH less than what I was supposed to pay, the job is OUTSTANDING, the guy even aluminium painted his welds so they wont rust.
I ended up getting the sleeper tip, now all I have to do is paint the muffler flat black and NO ONE will EVER expect it. LOL

Get a turbo! And just leave it there without connecting any pipes. Should quiet the exhaust down a bit.

KeWLKaT

The short strait on is a flexpipe
And the curved heatwrapped one is the Alpine downpipe. (have since put a bung on it for pyrometer)
