Alright, my 06 XD2 has about 8k on the clock and I hate the way the tranny feels. I'm sure it's working fine it just doesn't feel right. So, I'm going to do the slave cylinder mod and change the fluid to Redline MT-90.
Here is the question. I have never changed the fluid on a manual tranny. Is it as simple as pulling the plug, letting it drain, replace plug, and fill with fluid?
Where do I put the new fluid in?
I've found how much fluid to put in around here before but if you know could you pass that along?

Before wasting money on fluid, have you changed shifters/bushings yet?

I'll be doing that as well. I don't look at this as a waist of money on fluid but an upgrade with preventive aspects.

It's your money, I'm trying to tell you how to spend it by anymeans. I just don't feel you are going to feel any difference from a fluid change on a car with 8K miles. The biggest difference is the shifter base and linkage bushings. They make a world of difference in feel. The fluid for me helped a little just becaue I had 35k miles on it and it was dirty enough to be changed.

Trans oil MAY solve some issues especially if it is new or recently rebuilt. However, it won't solve all problems. There will be MORE garbage in the unit when new/rebuilt because the syncros have not had a chance to seat themselves where they need to be. I usually change trans oil/fluid at 15,000 after the new unit was installed then at 30K, change it again then stick to the 30K interval.

Ok, so far no one has cleared this up. Has anyone here changed their own manual tranny fluid? If so can you give me a brief walk through?

I wouldn't mind learning this myself too.

Remove 24mm drain bolt. Drain fluid. Remove 14mm fill plug on front side of trans, insert flexible funnel fill. replace bolt.
Not real difficult.

I believe he was refering to something along the lines of a DIY.

I'm sorry, but if you need a DIY to change manual trans fluid, LET SOMEONE ELSE DO IT FOR YOU.

OK but why be so stern with people? Maybe some people don't have anyone to watch do it and want to see it done via a DIY. Some people wanna make sure they do things right and want a little guidance. It's not going to hurt anybody. There are DIY for washing and waxing your car. I believe a DIY on transmission fluid would be a little more important than that seeing as you can't F up your car washing it, but you can with an improper fluid change.

Yo, look.. I'm not complaining. I wasn't asking for anything, I was just commenting that some people might wanna have guidance. That's all man.

I'm "stern" (as you put it) because I see DAILY what people do to their cars trying to perform a DIY they read on the internet. Some people just shouldn't work on cars. Some people break everything they touch while attempting it. Those people need to just step back and let someone else do it. It'll save them money.

Yeah that's cool man. If I didn't know what I was doing I wouldn't go mess around with it. I just meant maybe he wants to see pictures or something. I was trying to be friendly.

And the same one who thought manual tranny fluid was the same as your clutch fluid. You are my living and breathing example.

For some, the only guidance they need is directions to the nearest shop capable of handling their needs. Sucks, but life sucks sometimes. Welcome to reality.

No, I understand and you provided all the info that I needed thanks! One more question though, is the 14mm fill plug visible from the top?
It's always good to see that the internet has remained a bastion of peace and good will :D. No one need take themselves this seriously about my question. Your right though, if I am incapable of taking two bolts out and filling the tranny with fluid then I should let someone else do it.

Topside visibility depends on a few thing. If you still have the stock airbox and battery heatshield, no. If those are removed than it's easily accessible. I do suggest having someone holding the funnel and one pouring the fluid, makes it tons easier and less messy.

Excellent, thanks again for the info. Hopefully I can find a local vendor for Redline MT-90 and I'll be doing changing it this weekend.

I just changed the gear oil yesterday. One small correction to the posts above is the fill bolt is 17 mm. The reason I bring it up, there is a 14 mm beneath it, but facing down at 45 deg and people may get confused. Over all, it was simpler to do than an oil change, provided you get a funnel with the hose attachment. The one I picked up from Advance Auto had a valve which had to be twisted open for the fluid to flow.
At 54 K miles the fluid was cloudy and some shavings were on the drain bolt magnet.

Telly's right. It's a 14mm BOLT with a 17mm head. Uses the same drain plug washer as the oil pan.

Remove 24mm drain bolt. Drain fluid. Remove 14mm fill plug on front side of trans, insert flexible funnel fill. replace bolt.
Not real difficult.
I would edit this to say "after draining fluid "REINSTALL 24mm Drain Plug" then fill to the bottom of the fill plug opening.

My feelings are if you can't figure out to reinstall the drain plug, you needn't be doing anything to your car. Let a professional do it.

You have to be very careful, just like with the oil drain bolt, as the tranny case is aluminum and you can strip the threads. Do not overtighten them either!!!

great, I couldn't get to it this weekend and because of the extra info I'm glad I waited. I was confused by the filler bolt but I was right which one it is.
So, a couple more questions. Anyone know the tourqe specs on the bolts? The oil drain is 25-33 ft lbs so I fiqure about the same for these.
Is it 3 quarts to fill?
Thanks again

Yes, torque is the same as the oil drain bolt. Capacity is 2.15 quarts. I used 2 full quarts and added another 6 fl ounces from the 3rd bottle.

drain bolt is the big brass colored one just below the yellow line.
http://www.elantraxd.com/DIY/clutch8.jpg
the yellow arrow is pointing towards where the fill plug is
http://www.diversecultures.com/wytchdctr/fillplug.jpg
fill it untill oil comes back out. Wait for it to stop then put the plug back in.
That's all you need to know, apparently.
