View Full Version : Not reving past 5200 RPM? Help!

I was driving last week and all of a sudden, I went to race a civic and I hit my rev limiter a lot sooner than normal. I then watched it and noticed my engine was cutting off at 5200 rather than 6400. After about 20 more min of driving it finally went back to normal. Now, as of today, it won't stop doing that no matter how long I drive for. In every gear, my car cuts off at 5200 and won't go any faster than 90 mph. Does anyone think this is a sensor or do you think my ECU just needs to be reset? Has anyone run into this before?
Thanks in advance and sorry if this is a repost, but I searched and didn't find anything relating to this.

nope...i can tell you exactly what it is and i even have a fix for you
its your wheel speed sensor. im going to venture out and say you have a GLS, meaning the only wheel speed sensor is on the front pass side. the wire that runs down and into the knuckle...follow that wire, remove the 10mm bolt, and get a dowel rod or something and tap out that piece...it goes thru the knuckle and looks sorta like a silo
i even have a spare wheel speed sensor that was used for about 3 months. my old knuckle had the bolt snapped off and i couldnt bolt it in, so i bought a new knuckle that had a speed sensor and used that
60$ and i can get it sent out as early as today

heres a thread...i didnt update it w/ the solution i figured out that i just posted, but heres something to look @

well, i just saw your other thread asking about the rear disc conversion where you stated you have an 01 GLS. at this point, im about 99% sure that what i explained is the problem

Wow, thats great. Not that it happened to you, but that you knew exactly what I meant. I was worried no one was going to understand what the heck I was talking about. Thanks a lot, I'll take a look at it this weekend. BTW, I have a friend at my hyundai service center who can usually get me parts cheap. Thanks again for your help. Now I might be able to kick some civic butt again :-)

FYI, i unplugged my vss on my trans while on a dyno just to see what would happen, and i also had a rpm cut @ 5400...but i also didnt have a working speedometer

you also have an auto, and you're talking about a different sensor. when my vehicle speed sensor wasnt working last month for the month, i didnt have any problem going to redline daily.
im actually tempted to see about unplugging it and hopping on a dyno to see what it will max out at...if it cant read speed, how does it know when to cut fuel?? :D:D
scarfache - sent you a pm back

mine only redline'd at 5400 in top gear @ like 115mph. i dont think you checked the redline of every single gear when you had your sensor out :abovelol:

The limiter is controlled by the wheel speed sensor and not the tranny sensor.
