Does anyone know if it is necessary to get a 2006 Elantra rustproofed? Naturally the Dealer recommends it but what does the Manufacturer have to say about it ? Do "new" cars still need rustproofing or are they built better to resist rusting than they were in the past ?

I didn't get rustproofing for my 2006 Elantra which I purchased this June.

It depends what you call rustproofing. ALL new cars come with a THIN layer of undercoat, but that does not give full protection. To adequately provide rustproofing, the process begins before the surface is painted. Zinc Chromate is a product that I use to rustproof the car before I begin any repair while the car is at bare metal. It can be sprayed on, or the car *dipped* in it; which I prefer. After the car is painted, I like to see a minimum of 1/4 inch of undercoat on the underside of the car and maybe 1/16 inch on the topside of the floorboard after painting, then a layer of paint over that (the stuff can be painted).

I just bought a electric rust proofing thing ... I guess it cant hurt and most new cars come with that thing from the factory or it's an option from the dealership. just a different way of rustproofing the car if you dont want to get it sprayed.

I have found that the rustproofing that the dealer puts on deadens the sounds quite a bit.

I added about 3/8 inch of undercoat in the rear wheel wells and it did quiet things alot. Need to finish the car though.
