My son has a 97 Elantra, auto. Recently he had the trans fluid change and the idiots used Mercon fluid. His trans started slipping in overdrive, now he doesn't have overdrive at all. Today we changed the fluid and filter and put ATF #3 and the trans still slips in overdrive. It runs great in all of the gears except o/d. I read on IPT site where they replace the transmission end clutch packs on Mitsubishi's and this takes care of the slipping od. Does anybody know where I can get the end clutch packs without buying the whole rebuilt kit? Thanks you all have a great site.

OOF! Good question -- don't know, but you can probably get the full rebuild kit cheaper online.

You should also follow up with the shop that put the wrong fluid in. If it's a chain, ask for the regional or national manager's name and phone number, or look up the number online and complain. They should at least pay for the parts to fix it.

Actually ATF+ 3 is still the wrong fluid. Change it again and use the regular Dexron/Mercon III, but also buy a can of Friction Modifier for Highly friction modified transmissions. The additive will convert the Mercon III to the SP Fluid specified by Hyundai.

Which fluid is the best? the book calls for Mopar ATF Plus Type 7176 or equivalent. Is this the same as chrysler ATF#3? Thanks

Ok.. I thought I saw a different year. Yes, Mopar 7176 is the same as ATF + 3, but, I would go get a bottle of the friction modifier anyway. That stuff works really well. It may buy you some time.
** Edit **
Check with the dealer, there may be a recall on the issue you are talking about.

Thanks, I'll try the friction modifier.
