How many coats did you use?

Although this may be disheatening at this point of the project, you're going to want to take all that off and clearcoat it to prevent scratches from showing up easily... unless you used Krylon Fusion - that stuff's pretty durable.

Looks good. How long did that take to get through all those coats ?

12 minutes...

hahaha. it looks good man, well done. I don't think I could do that (although I've got the beige interior so it would be hard to find another colour to match).

how did you get that side vent out??

I would assume that it just pops out like the rest of the black trim pieces in the dash.

^^^I think there is a trick to it. I'm trying to remember back to when I painted mine, and thought there was something more than just popping it out... of course someone who's done this in the last 2-3 years may remember better than I.

neutral colors match the interior best, IMO. I like silver/grey (obviously, since that's what I did). Gloss black would also be decent (if you have gray interior).

The side vent came right out, no trickery afoot

like the look, surprized you have so many clear coats, the pics dont do it justice , it almost looks like flat from the pics.. at least to my untrained eye cuz i dont paint much

Yeah, i thought it did too. But I made sure to get that clear coat, that's one thing that most people stress the most.

Once again, I always forget, how do you guys prep it to paint? Fine sandpaper? or just Clean it with something special...??

A year later and I'm already sick of the blue. I mean, it looks alright, but it stands out too much. I want to go gloss black, like Felix mentioned. I think that would look a lot classier.

For those of you with painting experience, how hard would it be for me to get a gloss black finish?

I'm under the impression this is what I need to do:

1. Sand off blue

2. Coat of primer

3. Let primer dry, wet sand

4. Coat of black, let dry, wet sand.

5. Repeat step 4 a few times

6. Clear coat, let dry, wet sand

7. Repeat step 6

You don't need to sand off the blue, just sand it so it isn't glossy and prep the surface to take on the primer. After that you look ok.

I think the blue is a little too bright, but great job nonetheless.

Personally, I would suggest wet sanding the present paint off. The reason I suggest this is the thicknesses of the paint layers can really mess with you when you put everything back together again, and if you remove things in the future.

Wet sanding between clear coats is an okay idea too. I did it on mine, and the paint has lasted quite a while and is pretty durable. I also wet sanded between 4 coats of clear on Jared's (PSUsouthpaw's) gauge pod pillar (that I've yet to return to him), and that thing is almost bullet proof.

The main reason I'm going to take all these steps is I want my gloss black to actually be glossy.

I'm doing this on the Oct. 27th Circle City meet..weather permitting.

Yeah, I did a gloss black (w/ silver accents) and I like it. Came out pretty good for my first time.

Looks Good Munky, I like the idea of putting the blue in a white car (not just in tidal wave cars).

My car is silver, not white. Lol.

I first wanted to do this after I saw Andy's interior (he has a tidal wave XD2) but a year after I did it, I'm already bored with it. I'm going for gloss black, like you have.

Oops, sorry I was just looking at the door jamb in one of the pics. Black will go nice too.
