On the XD, the GTs are illuminated by LEDs, not the incandescent bulbs with caps over them, like the GLS. It's not as simple as switching out the bulbs. Not sure about the differences in the XD2. What year car do you have?

^Correct. However, can you change the bulbs to a different color on the XD2s? Are they the same between the GLS and GT, just with different colored light bulbs/diffusers?

i honestly don't think anyone has ever tried. not that i can remember off hand anyway.

I changed out my bulbs in my xd2 to red.4 #194 and 3 #74's I believe

The gauge clusters between the GT and GLS are different, they will not swap.

But can you change the bulbs from an XD2 GT to an XD2 GLS? (I know you can't on the XD, but I stopped paying attention to the gauge stuff on the XD2, since it didn't apply to me).

^^^ No, the XD2 GT uses LED's for dash lights. I bought some of the Matrix LED's from autolmination.com, and they worked great. Here is how they came out.

when i was a member on a Ford website, this sorta thing used to come up a lot.

people with crappy yellowish dash lights wanted the cooler custom look of blue, so they used to just pull the dash apart, get into the cluster, and change the globes to the colour they wanted.

they usually used Narva LED's in GLOBE HOLDERS.

i never did this myself, but, the way i think it works is they just go into your cluster like a normal light, but are LEDS. and plus with LEDS, they last longer etc.

oh - dont forget to 'frost' the tops of your LEDS if you go that way, to get a more even spread of light...
(by frost, i mean LIGHTLY sandpaper the tip of the LED)

hope that helps yaz out :)

EDIT: is it the rear of the cluster that has a 'green' colour on it.. or are the globes in the cluster of green colour?
if its the globes, then LED/colour change will be easy and will have good results, but if the cluster has the green filter on it.. then results will not be as good i dont think..
The blue that they use in the GT/Elite is nice tho.. wish i had that...

I heard of some people putting blue post-it-note paper in the lcd screen as the filter to change the colour of that... again on Fords so i dunno how relevant to hyundais.

Go to autolumination.com and look at the 194 bulb page. They are called the Matrix Style, not the brand Matrix. They acutally use a total of 5 LED's on a single fixture. Four of them point toward the sides, and one faces straight out. They work rather well.

06elantra, to answer your question, there are little green caps that go on each of the bulbs in the cluster. That is what gives you that green tint to the gauges.

I opened up my cluster and my HVAC and soldered in LED's with resistors so they would work on the 12 - 14V, I used 2 LED's in each hole, wired with resistors, sanded to spread the light and pointed into the reflectors / diffusers that are inside the console. Mine work great. Not too bright which is great as when they are overly bright it can be fatiging on the eyes. THey are a little bit brighter than the factory ones on the FX (Here in australia)

Took me about 2 hours to do including taking apart the dash to get the clusuter and the HVAC out, wiring them in pointing sanding etc and then putting the whole thing back together... thinking about it i should have done a DIY on it....

I have done this now to the XD, My J2 Wagon, My old Excel 94 model my wife;s old 93 excel a couple of Honda Civics 92 & 95 models and a Ford Falcon in Australia.

Not overly hard if your good with a soldering iron and patient

Anyways sorry if i made a rant

You're not ranting at all, I just wish you made a DIY about it. I would love to be able to do that...I'm not too good when it comes to stuff like that.

I second this motion, I would love a DIY for this.

i had a inst. cluster off at a salvage yard today all the bulbs were white however there are color filters on the plastic readout if that makes sense in otherwords simply changing to differrent color lights prolly wouldnt help much

oh the car i checked was a 2000 elantra however my 2002 looks the same except green filters instead of blue ..im not going to let the filters stop me tho ill think of a way around it or remove them when my shippment or blue LED's get's in about 7-14days from hong kong if i do this project ill try to take some pics
