Ok. I have had 3 unmodded beta 2's (1 beta 2 and 2 beta 2.5 cvvt's) and one rd with a beta 1 that had the usual I/E/H.
The beta one was a great engine. It felt solid and took all the beatings I could throw at it. Never any problems or any feelings that I should lighten up on it a little as it approached 80,000.
The beta 2 felt ok but was a little different. Maybe it was the fact that hyundai used some more "cost effective parts" for internals.
Now comes my question. Does anybody here that has owned a beta 1 or a beta 2 now own a beta 2.5? And if so, does it feel cheap to you? Do you ever worry that the valves are going to break up into peices like they were made out of balsa wood. Do you ever worry that the pistons are going to punch a hole through the block?
Maybe it's just me, but even after 3000 miles on the new motor, Im scared to really test it. I've found myself wishing it was a beta 1. All i hear are tapps and whines and clicks coming from what used to be one of my favorite motors.
Or am I just crazy?
Yamaha, you've boosted your beta 1. have you ever drivin a beta 2.5 really hard and felt this way? Anyone else?
Oh! and that doesnt even speak for the fact that I am now getting the dreaded "rev hang". After 3000 miles

Beat the hell out of it, and if it breaks, take it in for warranty.

I have driven my car and beat it to hell with the automatic transmission. I was driving it with 12psi for awhile but the engine is getitng pulled and im stuffing a gt2871 on it. I've also driven Evans car as well. I honestly think its a hit and miss sometimes with engines. Both Evan's car and my own took beatings.

Dude the only sounds of the mechanical lifter valves vs the hydraulic crap ones that the beta1 had.

I've beat on mine almost since I got it. I've got 40k on it now, and it's still running great. Almost better with time. Just ask the 04 Sonata V6 how it runs.

To be perfectly honest, I was much happier with my '02 XD motor. This new CVVT crap sucks, every run is different at the track, sometimes the engine out performs what I'm used to and other times I feel like I'm driving a Honduh Civic.
I prefer the Beta II, having driven the Beta I's before (not my own). But, at this point, if some offered me $8000 for my car, I'd take it so I can go find another 2002 Elantra, GT or not.
P.S. This is my second motor, rod went through the block on the first one with less than 4000 miles on the car. I've replaced the rod bearings on this "newer" motor twice now. It's a piece of ****....

That's what I was wondering. I beat the hell out of my CVVT motor, and it's never given me any toruble at all. Are you putting 18lbs. of boost or a 250 shot on the car or what. Rod bearings don't just go out without some serious abuse.

Thats exactly what I mean. The Beta 2 felt much more solid. I took it out the first day it was real cold here (35) and it felt like i was driving an accent. Like he says, its different every time. This just reaffirms my desire to swap a beta 2 map motor. Easier to tune and alot more confidence in my mind that it will hold up. Plus, if i'm gonna boost, who need cvvt! If it was a full variable valve system, instead of one cam, that might be different.

Piece of junk on the highway punched a hole in his oil pan if i remember correctly...that was one of the times at least...I remember stopping over the day he replaced the rod bearings...

How the hell can you call the Beta2 a crap motor if YOU broke it? g'damn.

I believe that the crap on the highway was only one of the times it threw a rod bearing. The other time was for something completely unrelated. also, the first time I think he changed all of the bearings to be sure, IIRC.
Personally, I love my beta 2.5 and feel it is a very strong motor compared to the BETA I. of course, all my Beta I ever had in the way of mods was a short ram and ported intake manifolds...

i have to say that i think the beta 1 was better...especially since the CPU wasnt all wierd like they are on the beta 2...i have 81k on mine now...and i've never let up...i do 80+ on my way to work and i have no issues...but of course now that i said that...
i also agree with keyan
