I now have 57,xxx miles on my 01. The hyundai dealership wants 550+ for the service. They say the main things are the trans flush, coolant flush and timing belt. I just had my coolant flushed 8,500 mile ago so I don't need that. Why so much money? Cant I just buy a timing belt and have my local garage install it, or will I void my warranty since the dealership did not do the work?

As long as the work is done correctly, and you have documentation (receipts, etc) that the work was done, your warranty will be intact. A lot of the cost comes from the labor for changing the timing belt. $550 doesn't sound all that off. I paid $365 for the 30K service on my Santa Fe, so adding a timing belt for an additional $185 would seem to be accurate.

Is that the only belt that needs to be replaced? So a local garage would'nt be any cheaper?

Local garage will probably be a little cheaper on their hourly rate. The only question is if they know what they're doing to be able to get it done in the same time the dealer can, as they work on Elantras every day. I'm not sure about the complete list of needs for the 60K service. I know there is a thread about it somewhere. Also, there should be a chart that came with your manual that outlines what needs to be done at what time.

For anyone else looking, you can get your service information and maintenance schedule, etc at:
http://www.hyundaiusa.com/owners/myhyundai/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fowners%2fservice%2fservice records.aspx

You need to register, and to do that you have to have your VIN number, so be sure to write that down.

I paid $275 for labor to get my timing belt changed. And $20 for the belt itself

Mundelein, IL. The guy that did it works 2 doors down from my boyfriend, and he knows us. And I bought the belt online.

I did everything myself for my 60k Service, all I had the dealership do is a trans flush which costed me jus under $150
