I am interested in getting fog lights installed in my 06 elantra, I was quoted $300 just in parts (fog lights, relay, switch). I was wondering what size would fit the 06 and where would I get these parts cheeper?

I think you may contact kspec.com, dreamka4u.com or some simliar retailers who are selling KDM parts in US. They ship the oem parts directly from Korea and are usually less expensive.

Although it seems that kspec has only 01-03 fog lights on their web site, they may be able to ship 04-06 fog lights if you contact them since it's very easy to buy such items in Korea.

For fog lights, relay, and wire harness they will be around $90 ~ $100 (if bought in Korea, it would be around $50~55.). I have no idea how much it would be for the switch since I didn't put it. I just let the fog lights turned on when the headlights are on. (easier to wire. no switch needed.)

You can do it for far less than $100 using aftermarket fogs. See this link (http://www.dfwhyundais.com/diy/FogLights/DIY-FogLights.html) for more info. I need to update that DIY to include the fact that Hella Optilux Fog Lamps, models 1000 through 1150 (http://www.hella.com/produktion/Optilux/WebSite/AuxiliaryLights/FogLamps/FogLamps.jsp) are a good fit.

The Hella lights might be a "good fit", but nothing beats OEM. I use the real hyundai lights, and had no problems. Check the DIY on OEM Foglights.

Yeah there's a Hyundai dealer in Canada (Guelph, Ontario, I believe) that has sold the fog light kits in the past. I believe in a recent sale, though, they said it was their last set. As far as I've seen, they're the only ones that sold the kit. And as far as "OEM looks", because of the way the 04-06 fog lights are mounted, it is virtually impossible to tell aftermarket from OEM. All the "messy" aftermarket stuff is hidden by the bumper fascia. You end up with something like this:

http://www.dfwhyundais.com/diy/FogLights/Images/wills03/NoOpening.jpg

Now, in my case, you can tell they're not OEM because I got yellow-tinted fogs. That was my preference (the look kind of like the yellow fogs on many Lexus models). But the Hella fogs I linked to are made in both yellow and white versions.

Bottom line- yeah, if I could get OEM for a decent price, I'd have probably put them in. But the aftermarket ones are pretty damn good too.

Can anyone comment on how effective the OEM lights are at illuminating the road compared to aftermarket lights like the Hella's? I don't like adding lights to my car unless they are going to help light up the road.

The difference is the OEM fog lights do what fog lights are supposed to do, light the road in front and to the immediate front-sides of the car, without scattering too much light back to you from fog/rain. Most aftermarket add-on lights are not fog-lights - they're driving lights. Which is basically like a high-beam or spot-light added at the bottom of your car.

In foggy conditions, I have better vision turning off my hella 'driving' lights and running low-beams only. Now on a clear night, obviously the driving lights make an improvement.

As I do not have OEM fogs on the elantra, I cannot compare too much, but I do have OEM fogs on the Santa Fe - and they do a good job illuminating the area in front of the car, as they are supposed to do.

EDIT:

The idea behind all lights is that is easier to see farther if it is not bright immediately in front of you. That's one of the reasons fog-lights are supposed to cut out when you turn on the high-beams. If it's bright right in front of the car, it's harder to see farther into the distance. However, when bad conditions occur like rain, snow, or fog, the lights that normally shine into the distance are reflected back at your face - doing more harm than good. The design of a true fog light is to light up the road directly in front of you, in a way that doesn't scatter the light back into your face.

It depends what kind of aftermarket lights you buy. If you buy "fog lights" they will have a low-beam pattern and fill in the area below your regular low beam lights. If you buy "driving lights" they will aim higher and will not be effective as fog lights.

My aftermarket lights are fog lights and work fine in the fog and rain.

Just make sure you buy what you want.

Haha I picked up a cheap set at Walmart and they are bright. Haha. I didn't want to waste all my money on a set of fogs. Haha.

I did it more for show then actual use of them, I use them on occasion. Hehe. :-p

SO, If I buy the aftermarket or the OEM can I just splice them into the marker light wiring, and they will just turn off an on with the marker, parking lights? correct? I am a little electically challenged. Thanks

Correct. That's what most people do.

Yeah, that's where I got my OEM's from 2 months ago. like $89 for OEM kit with lever. installed in about 2.5 hours. Hardest part isn't mounting the lights themselves, it's getting the wires through the firewall and wiring the harness under the steering column.

I got the dealership to align the lights at no charge since they had to replace the electric mirror switch after 5 months. I bought my GLS May 13'th 2006 and right now I'm looking at 14k miles. Kinda low for my projections. I bought my Elantra as a dedicated work car as it has a great warranty and a lot better gas mileage than my 1999 Tracker. So yeah, 14k miles just from working.

This link (http://www.dfwhyundais.com/diy/FogLights/DIY-FogLights.html#Section1i) jumps you right to the point in the DIY for running the wires.

Yeah, I sprung for the 100k everything warranty, and gap of course. Since it's a work vehicle and I'm driving an average of 34,000 miles a year it made sense to get the 100k on everything.

FYI: I install networks, practice management software, digital imaging and digital x-ray equipment in dental office for Dexis, Dentrix and Kodak Dental Systems. I'm the Field Tech for Northern California which means I drive between Bakersfield and the Oregon border, over to Reno, NV. I'm based in the East Bay Area (about a half hour north-east of San Francisco)

Yeah, getting the OEM connectors thru the little grommet was a pain.. took me almost an hour... but it was worth it :D
