Hehe my new project....... So i got tired of the elantra headlights and wanted to do a retro.... well idk if you wanna call it a retro but i guess it is. So anyway bought some parts from tib headlights so check out the pics of how my new headlights are turning out. It should look alot better when im done. So far i have modded the glare sheild to give a sharper cut off with more color from the projector as well test fitted the tib lights into the elantra headlight .
Anyone got any ideas on what i can use to cover up the guts of the projector.... after i take care of that im pretty much all done!!! :D
planning on using a 6k d2s rebased to h7 light.
hehe gonna get a great cut off for far less..... ;)
so any suggestions let me know.....
here are some pics of the fitting

Those are real nice, man. I wouldn't even know where to begin on the covering for the guts, but I'm sure you'll think of something.

as far as covering i think it would look the most finished if you found a way to mold the housing with fg or bondo or something, or maybe do a flat piece to give it a more flush look?

was the tib projector a bolt on or do you have to make some mounting area or did you get creative. as for covering the guts how much of the origial did you remove and is there any way you can use the another cover from the same light
txdproject
11-14-2006, 04:08 PM
Its for sure not a bolt on and a few mods have to be made to the high beam for it to fit inside our headlights. As for the guts thing it just wouldnt work taking the cover part from the tib and i wanted to be orignal with it.... .the only thing i took was the high beam in projector. That leads me to another topic....im going to have chop the high beam wires to alow them to work with the high beam as it is h7....yes just like the projectors is h7. As for mounting i have alot of good ideas of what i need to do... just gotta get something to make the projector look pretty lol. Oh yes and these have the daytime runnning light place in the high beam so im going to have to buy a 194 connector and super glue that sucker in the whole

you should make these and test them, when they work great then you should sell them, and hook me up for the idea! :)

You should use the Tib covers, but like this!!

wow.
i am utterly flabbergasted that you are not going with real HID projectors. rebased bulbs into halogen projectors are still nowhere near as good as true HID projectors, but I am sure you dont need me to tell you that.
i mean I hope you dont think this post is a flame, but seriously, all that work....
txdproject
11-14-2006, 11:31 PM
well.... here is the thing... im really trying to make this as easy as possible for myself.... Yes it is a halogen projector however the sheild inside is modded so that i will have the sharpest possible cut off. Tib projectors :after doing research on new tib are a cheap easy install since this will be the first pair i make. check out some of these photo's from a member on new tib..... his cut off is great so why waist all my time messing with the already good projectors.
Here are my rules on this swap. to get about the same output as a true hid projector
im using a rebased bulb..yea so what still good...For light output not going over 6000k.... only going over700k oem color
2. Using a rebased bulb that has the correct placement for correct light out... many reason why hid isnt good in oem projectors is due to the fact the most kits light placement isnt correct causing tons of glare and dim output. With the d2s bulbs that i have i will get the correct and focused light output i want. SO WHY BUY MORE STUFF sure im not gonna get the 100% true ouput of hid but i should get atleast 90% of it with a crazy cut off. cant beat that.
some photos of tib oem projctors ...with hid...this might just make a few of you undertake this retro too...!

i doubt it would be hard on XD headlights, there are no real sweeping curves and funny angles like on the sol's lights...

Like stated above, I think you should use fiberglass/bondo, because then you could always make a mold from it :)

well here is todays update...got everything mounted right.... going out today to buy 194/168 day time running connectors that hopefully will fit inthe brights..also think about doing the angle halo things on both both the brights and projector....then again that might be too much? what do you guys think?

hmmm... its just a thought...since everything is all apart....on 2nd thought i think im just going to keep it simple... just have the day time running lights.....if do change my mind again... i would be doing the angel eyes white....no ricey crazy colors

alright now comes the next issue....the 194/168 daytime running lights.... its gonna be easy to rig them up but...idk what color to do them.... I know im going to use leds but idk if i wanna do them a led white or what color.any other color i guess would be considered ricey

amber daytime running lights ewww......maybe a gold one idk
i duno that id screw with the color much, id prolly go fairly standard. i mean it would look kinda cool to do something flashy, but you gotaa watch what legal and what not also.. unless you wire then to a seperate switch and only use them when you know its safe

im not sure yet... its not a very hard fabrication to do... but its just the fact that whoever wanted it done would have to have the following things for me to do it.
A pair of either used of brand new Elantra headlights....
guts from tiburon lights....03-06 will work.
and a few screws and bolts and thats about it.

Alright people problem and solution time.....
So alright i guess im going to be using this thread to keep a log of any problems i run into...here goes what i have found issues with so far.
Problem 1 ....how can i mount them..... Solution... Easy use the factory adjust bolt located at the bottom of the bright as a guide. However you will need to use a screw about an inch longer than the one in place(very easy to get at hardware store). the 2 top screws will not be used....you will have to drill new toggle screws for the top.
Problem 2.... Projector and light have no bezel at all giving a very unfinished look. Solution ...not to hard...probley going to use so sheet metal and sand it down then paint it black to give it a clean oem look.
Problem 3.... Cant get factory black bazel that goes in front of oem lights back on. Solution.. The new high beam area will have to be trimmed down around the area where the high beam will be placed.
Problem 4. tib high beam and projector wont fit into elantra housing with high beam glare shield on....Solution high beam sheild can be taken off. 3 bolts hold it in place. Dont worry you wont blind anyone unless you drive around with your new high beams on lol.
Problem 5. Tib high beam is h7 and elantra high beam is h1....(Will be a problem for some newbies)... Solution. Should be very easy.. just disconnect the ground from the oem elantra light and plug it into either side of the new h7 high beam then make sure to get yourself some sort of boot for the postive terminal... dont want them touching..could get ugly. Also you wont be able to change the high beam very easy so make sure that its in correct the first time.
Those are all the problems thus this far into the retro.
oh yes if you plan on using hid in the retro like i will be doing so and want a sharp cut off and good out put some rules to remember.
First off before i go any further the h7 application is one of the best for hid.
Alright anyway.... make sure you have a well known hid kit.
Never go over 6k rating on the bulb or you will have to much color output which will in tunr produce crappy light output the you can use.
If you want a balance of color and light output get a 5k kit. if you want good alittle more color and almost the same light output get 6k. BUT DO NOT GO OVER 6k or you have completly killed the purpose of having hid and everyone will look at you and think hmm those must be pep boys rice lights.
Next make sure the hid kit you buy takes advantage of the oem focus points of the halogen bulb...if not you will not get a sharp cut off at all.

BUMMMP.... almost ready to start doing some testing on road... now i have to toss aroud the idea...either keep 6k hid or go to either a 5k or 4700k

Hey TXD, I have a few questions regarding your setup.
1. Do you have any pictures of the backs of the elantra headlamps?
2. Are your projectors sticking far enough out to use the oem capsule for the proper seal?
3. what type of bonding agent did you use for the projector mounting screws on the back part of the headlight housing?
txdproject
12-26-2006, 05:57 PM
1. will have pictures soon..but for the time being... they are pretty much flush so you can use the stock caps if ya want.
2.Nope they are pretty much sitting where they would oem..thanks to long bolts
3. probley just a window sealer...not sure yet.
oh also cut off is very very very sharp... i was amazed. almost looks as good as oem hid ..like around 99%. output is very good cant wait to get them all finish. Be warned to anyone that wants to do this your looking at 3-4 month worth of 1 to 2 hour work for them to come out nice and bef fully adjustable

How do you know/calculate the "the oem focus points of the halogen bulb?" Is it just using h7 HID's or is it more complicated?

easy... i bought my hid parts from a well known good quality company and theyrebase the bulbs to have the same focus point as the halogen bulb. to double check this i lined up the base of a halogen bulb and the rebased and the focus points lined up perfect.

As for covering the guts, make a foam mold over the guts and sanded it to the shape you would like. Carve out the hole for the lens. Then fiberglass/CF and paint the mold.
Could end up looking something like this:

No, I myself have never done it. But when TXD was saying he couldn't figure out how to cover the guts of his project, this was the first thing that came to my mind. And like I said, you don't have to use CF. You can use fiberglass too. The pics on page 2 pretty much show the process of how it's done.
