View Full Version : Exhaust..

Ok, so I'm looking for an exhaust for my 05.. I have been thinking about it for awhile just never really been too serious until now. I did some searching and havent really found anything useful.
So what I want:
- NO 18" diameter ricer fart can that bottoms out everytime I hit a bump.
- Something that looks stock (so the tip after the muffler points down behind the bumper)
- Other than stock I do like the dual tip look, but the picture I saw they had used a dremel to cut the bumper so it had a better look, a) i dont have a dremel, b) dont have the balls to cut my bumper
- It will be installed professionally.
- Something that sounds decent, deeper sounding and loud, but not super loud like some ricer removed their cat.
- Not costing more than $400 installed.

With that said;
- Meineke's "performance exhaust" was quoted at $300-$400 installed.
- They said $100 of that being for the muffler.
- What/who offers an exhaust that will fit and isnt costly (if I buy it online I still have to pay for the install).
- Has anyone gotten there exhaust done at Meineke and how did they like it?
- If they are going to charge $100 for the muffler, what else could I get that is around what im looking for (sound/size) that is less costly?

I am not worried about the HP, the 5HP isnt really going to make a difference, I am just looking for something that will give my exhaust a better sound. As of right now I'm not looking for headers but that is bound to change down the road.

So can anyone give me some ideas, links, pics of what they have?, personal preference (if youve tried different types what did you like and dislike), and any other helpful information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

a lot of people seem to go for the magnaflows and flowmasters if you prefer the stock look but the tps will hang underneath the bumper.....order off of cardomain it usually has the cheapest prices for those mufflers.

Look around more perhaps, if possible. I was able to get a 2.25" custom exhaust for 175 including installation. Go for a dual tip like a magnaflow if possible. My exhaust is angled slightly down because I decided not to cut into the bumper. It doesn't look that great like that. Gains are minimal as well. Good luck!

I got mine done recently. It's 2 1/4" crush bent from the second cat back to a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler (I'm pretty sure it was model #17731). It's hidden up in the stock location. I'm very happy with it. I also had a new 2 1/4" resonator welded in place to keep it quiet, so it's just a tad louder than stock with nice deep sound. From the sounds of it, you'll probably want to skip the resonator.

I paid about $40 for the muffler, $15 for the resonator and $250 CDN for the install. I could've shopped around and gotten it installed cheaper, but I paid extra for a place I know does good work.

Get a Borla XS. Nice grumble sound, but not as loud as a Magnaflow or FLowmaster. Dont have to worry about it getting louder overtime as its a straight thru silenced with steel mesh.

ya but for half the price you can have a shop do just about the same thing....at over $500 shipped the ark exhaust just isnt worth it.

Yeah. I got mandrel bent, custom EXACTLY to my specs exhaust, turbo back, for less than the ARK system :)

Ok, so I went to a locally owned shop today for some exhaust work. I talked to the guy when I set the time I could come a little, but didnt really help much. I had gone there wanting them to:
1) Remove 2nd cat
2) Remove resonator
3) Replace stock muffler with the one they have in stock (it was a turbo something)

When I told him this right before he said:
1) Its against the law to remove either cats, and you'll throw a CEL, which I told him no I wnt but I didnt bother arguing and pissing off the guy because he was chill and I dont want someone pissed at me working on my car. but of course an 18yr old punk cant be right haha
2) Removing the resonator will be worthless.

So what I ended up having done was he cut out the stock muffler and replaced it with a pipe and made a little downpipe so it looked stock, which was one of my biggest concerns. I was still planning on the turbo muffler but it just didnt sound as nice as it did with nothing, so maybe if I find a nice muffler sometime I can have him put it on, or maybe ill get a high-flow cat or something, but for right now.. it sounds awesome and i love it.
I highly doubt there is much/any performance from this but it sounds great

so now you are mufflerless?

Yup, not quite sure how I feel about it that though. Its pretty loud in 1st-3rd and especially around 3,500rpms but if its around 2 and im not flooring it in like 5th its not really noticable (or just the wind is louder). I'm most likely gonna be looking around for a decent muffler that will keep the sound and add some performance without costing too much, but for the time being im satisfied.

not exhaust related but just an update.. I also put on an SRI intake and painted my engine cover blue (which would be great except mid spray painting it rained out of no where.. so now with some bubbles it looks like its always wet but ill most likely do it over when I paint the fuse cover).

Once I heard that SRI growl I knew I couldnt just stop at that haha, the combo of the straight pipe and intake is great too

Magnaflow #14801. Its dualtipp, and angled. Thats what I had, and am getting again. Have the shop use the angle to curve it around the bumper, it'll look sweet. Trust me.

Hows the sound? and you have any pics of what you mean by curved around the bumper?

I dont have a soundclip, but it was deep and nice. Everyone loved it at the pittsburgh meet. And the pics should be in the link in my sig, if thier not lemme know.

Also it helps to keep it from botteming it out. I only hit that muffler off the ground twice because of me going to fast or not going in at the right angle that would have made ANY car scrape.

Good, the roads here are **** and half the time I pull in anwhere I have to go like 2mph.. which ruins any thoughts of me getting a bodykit.

hey corey, if you were looking at my duel tip muffler / rear bumper was custom cut... i actually didn't do that... a body shop did

Slapshotman7
12-01-2006, 09:17 PM
it may have been.. I got an estimate at another place for a custom bent 2.25" exhaust with a dual tip and they were gonna cut my bumper and it would have been $600 so I just said **** that. I've been thinking about the EF group buy that they put out for $250 if they get 10 buyers.. any opinions on going that route?.. The tip isnt dual but its oval so it wont look as ricey or hang down as low, plus I'll feel better about having a muffler. cant decide what to do damnit

yea that looks sweet, kind of reminds me of a bmw exhaust. I wish I lived closer too, living in east bum **** sucks, you could still sell it to me but shipping would probably be a pain in the *** unless you sent the super cheap way which islike 3 weeks or something haha, when were you planning on doing that?.. and what is it exactly just the muffler?

12-01-2006, 09:51 PM

hey guys, i'm gonna go with a custom exhaust (2.25 inch piping catback, mandrel bent, with an N1 style muffler, maybe mounted at an angle, depending on the fit) and was wondering on some opinions on whether i should also incoporate a high-flow catalytic converter or not (i still have a stock exhaust manifold).

yay.... another n1 rice muffler....

hendu318
12-11-2006, 03:58 AM
well, i don't want that rice muffler sound. i want a nice deep tone. what do you suggest?

KeWLKaT
12-11-2006, 04:03 AM
i'm not referring to the seound really, I was referring to the canister style tip.

I suggest you go with what is called a "turbo-style" muffler (which is what I have), it's a normal muffler that does an S inside of the chamber, makes nice deep sound. Borla, magnaflow, Dynomax.... etc.

sounds deep like you want

or you can go with the Evo fusion Group buy, and it has an oval muffler w/ oval tip not canister style

we need more people to get this group buy going

Got a flowmaster 60 series, can't even see it, its hidden better than the stock one was. Not too loud 2,000 rpm seems to be the loudest but I have a SRI and after 3,000rpm that all I can hear from insided the car + I removed my hoodliner.

I don't know about you guys but I understand that the exhausts done by the crushed bent method is not the best option when you are looking for performance. Also many of the muffler shops offer galvanized steel not mirror polished 304 SS which is way superior to galvanized steel.

This system also include a resonator so you wont have to buy any glasspack also.

The custom downpipe that is installed in my car cost me 207, 30e/a for the 2.5 bents, 25 for the turbo flange, 12 for the O2 bungs, 20 for drill the bungs and the flange, 60 in labor for the tigweld and 40 in the muffler shop for the ramainig piece plus the travel expenses and the imagination used to create it and the insulation was 28.00. Alpine 3" 5 bolt downpipe cost a little less than 300 so, if I have to do it again all buy the alpine.

I make a search to buy the 304 SS bends and piping, a nice borla muffler, all necesary SS flanges, plus tig welding labor and guess what, the price was close to 500.00 so this ARk catback is a great deal. Of course if you don't care about looks or maximun horsepower gains you can go with crushed bent.

Agin that is just me.

Look.

I went MANDREL 2.5" all the way.

After the downpipe. This starts right under the oil pan.

With a high flow cat, and a muffler. Both dynomax. An O2 bung on the downpipe, and also another one after the cat.

It cost me a TOTAL of around 550$ CAN, including installation to get EXACTLY what I wanted.

I say. Custom is the way to go, definately.

12-12-2006, 08:37 PM
Yours is mandrel so its great. It is SS too? I will prefer to have a different muffler than N series since they are cop callers but the price on that Ark catback is just perfect. You can't ask for a better price considering what they are offering. It's about each ones judgment for looks and performance. ;)

Hey did you go over the supension control arm (as the OEM) or straight?

KeWLKaT
12-12-2006, 09:08 PM
No mine is aluminized steel, not shiny and all "attractive" (who looks at your exhaust piping anyways), but DOES NOT RUST just like stainless.

I went over the axle, like OEM. I don't want my pipes rubbing with the 2 inch drop ;) especially in winter since this is a year-round car.

mayollo072R
12-12-2006, 09:49 PM
Got you. Yeah, you have a point on the shinny looks underneath :D . But in my case shinny is always recomended for shows. Yours must perform very well since dynomax turbo are great stuff and it's been outhere for a while.

12-12-2006, 10:01 PM
aluminized or galvanized will eventually rust out, but what are the chances that you'll be daily driving this "tuner car" until the wheels fall off? most people change plans/etc before the exhaust would rust out.

if I was going to get an exhaust for a NA car, it would be the evo fusion catback...turbo car would be a custom exhaust for sure.

KeWLKaT
12-12-2006, 10:18 PM
bah i shot it with aluminium paint as well so i dont think it i will rust out anytime soon (maybe in 10 years lol)
