View Full Version : Changing manual tranny fluid/squeaking noise when shifting

Today I noticed that when I shift in or out of third gear, it squeaks a bit. My transmission shifts perfectly and doesn't seem to have any problems otherwise, and I have been thinking lately that I need to change the tranny fluid anyway, so..

I figured the squeaking was because it needed lubrication. The car's at 105k, I've owned it since 92k, and I don't think the previous owner ever changed it. So yeah, I figure it's way past due. I called Firestone to get an idea of how much they would charge (to see how it would cost compared to if I were to do it), and they said 90 dollars.. and asked how many miles are on the car and if the fluid's been changed before. I told them, and they said they wouldn't work on the car. I asked why, and the guy said that they won't change the tranny fluid on a car over 90,000 miles if it's never been done before, because.. something about sediments having settled and if you change the fluid now, you'll do damage to it.

I've never heard that before, and it sounds like a load of BS to me. Is it?

I called Aamco afterward, and they said Firestone doesn't know what they're talking about, and told me to come in for a free tranny diagnosis to see why it's squeaking.

What do you all think?

well... on autos if it hasn't been serviced then you shoudln' do it because the sediments and sludge get in with the clutch packs and if you flush them it can cause more issues because of lining up or something or other. i forget at the moment. manuals manuals you're fine.

change it yourself. just like an oil change. remove the 22mm (maybe? i forget) bolt and then fill with a hose and funnel with 2.5 qts (double check manual) of 75w90 gl-4 (very important) manual transaxle fluid.

Yeah, I know how to do it, I just wanted to see if it'd be worth it to just take it in and have it done because I don't have the time... but 90 bucks is steep, so I will probably have to do it myself.

either way, it's a manual transmission... i called a couple more places and everyone seems to think it's the gear shifter that's making the squeaking noise. would that really be it, considering it only does it going into one gear?

Where does the squeak seem to come from... bearing in mind that the transmission is in the engine bay? Maybe check out any DIYs for short shifters and take a look at the lubrication around your shifter basket

...although the DIY does not mention it the shifter boot simply pops off with a little persuasion and there are four screws holding down the center console

2.2 quarts of MTF. you need GL-4 75w90. its hard to find. my buddy just got some at the dealership and said they charged him like 15$/qt

Honestly, I can't really tell where the squeaking is coming from. I can hear it loud and clear sitting in the car, but everyone outside the car can hear it as well. I can't pinpoint it.

Both tranny shops I've talked to so far have said it's my gear shifter... don't know what that means. Is that the actual.. stick, I guess? I'm retarded, I know.. sorry.

Someone else I know who knows a decent amount about cars said it sounded like it was the shift linkage just needing to be greased up, not a big deal. He compared it to a squeaky elbow.

oh.. and as of a couple hours ago it's also doing it when shifting in and out of fourth gear, not just third anymore.

Oh, and.. uhh according to every manual I have, all I need is 75W90 gear oil. Which is http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?categorycode=3242&mfrcode=AHM&mfrpartnumber=6018715901
