View Full Version : wipers stop 1/2 way, "feature" "cool trick" or "problem"
has anyone else notices this?
when i hit my wiper switch up (which is the quick single wipe) if i just tap it quickly the wipers will go about 1/4 or 1/3 of the way up the windshield and just stop and stay there.
So is ask, is this a cool little trick? a hyundai "feature" of some problem i should have looked at?
i dont really think its problematic, i was j/w if anyone else can do this?

I can do it on mine if I just use the quick tap method you describe... so instead I make sure to move the stalk the entire 1/4 inch to make it go all the way :P
It does make you wonder why it would stop if the connection was made enough to start it though ???

Motor has a certain control to go through a complete cycle, but it needs enough juice to prod it along to do the complete cycle.

My Santa Fe does the same thing if I tap the wiper up just enough, it moves a little. Kinda a 'false start' if you don't push the lever up all the way/long enough.
(that feature didn't come on 2002 Elantras, so I only have my Santa Fe from experience)

oh yeah, it's not a feature, a cool trick nor a problem. It's just the way it is. My old civic used to do it. my swift does it. my parent's old tercel and older civic do it. My sis-in-law's ion does it. You just have to know to hold it long enough (usually I hold it 1/2 way through the cycle) to get it to do the complete.

Yup, it often does it when I use the sprayer... kind of annoying when it does it when you don't want it to.

believe it or not its a feature that i think was started by Honda, what it does is brings the wipers up to the level of the defroster so they can thaw out if they have ice on them

I noticed my wipers do this when I just jab the washers. The wipers will cycle once and then park 1/4 of the way up through the cycle.

"Doc, it hurts when I do this."
"Well, don't do that!" :D
Mine will sometimes stop a bit short of where they should. Never had one stop halfway up, tho.
I've always thought the lack of "click on/click off" high beams was an interesting "feature."

Just curious what you mean by click on click off high beams? If you push the stalk back, the high beams will remain on. Is that what you mean? If you pull the stalk forward, that's for "flash to pass", which isn't legal in a lot of states.

i don;t know about the honda part but I definitely agree with the rest of your statement.
ok, so im not alone, thats all i was really wondering about, cool. it doesnt sound like a bad thing, never thought of the defrost aspect of it... i basically just do it when my g/f is in the car and say "wow that makes me cool" and it gets on her nervs and i think its hilarious.. so that why i like it!! haha

^^ Now that's true love when you do little things like that just to piss her off. Funny.
If this is, in fact, a method of keeping the wipers parked on a warm part of the windshield when it's icy, why not just put a little deicer strip (kind of like the rear defogger) across the bottom of the windshield like some of the other manufacturers do?
woah woah woah.. are you talking commen sense here? cause i dont think thats allowed when dealing with manufacturers.. you must retract your previous statement! Snarf!

I have a 2002 elantra GLS, and i can do it too. But my car was manufactured way at the end of the 2002 model, so i share MANY of the same parts as the XD2.
Never tried it until i read this thread!

Exactly. This is the first car I've owned that didn't click to brights with a pull back on the lever. IMO the Hyundai way is inferior.
You guys wouldn't remember the old foot switch... I am OLD! :D
Threadjack over... ;)
As for the wiper trick, I'm gonna fool around with my stalk a bit. (That sounded bad! )
The defroster thing sounds reasonable. I'll see if I can get my Y2K wagon to do it. I use my ice scraper maybe 6 times a year (Yes, I live in SoCal & have ice scrapers in my cars!) Might be handy if I could warm up my wipers.

my wipers do the 1/4 thing too, and i kinda like it when its raining too cause i sometimes sit low so i can see under it when its raining REALLY hard
