View Full Version : Moderating First 1-5 posts!?!?!

With the recent flood of spambots I have been heavily thinking about moderating the first post or first few posts of new members so we can avoid the spam. I mean, generally they only spam once and it's an easy thing to delete but it's a waste of time and it makes the forum messing (especially in the Marketplace and Flame sections). I've always been against this type of thing because I like the forum being open and quick to access but I think the time has come.

What do people think of this?

In the meanwhile, I'd ask that people stop posting in the threads that are blatantly spam and just ignoring them until myself or one of the other mods get around to it.

I'd probably do like 10 or so just to be safe or even a secret number to be safer

I agree... DO it....

I appreciate that you are seeking the input of the members. I bet moderating the first two posts would be sufficient because they like to drop their spam, then run. The spam is so annoying ... I really don't see how anybody thinks the stuff actually nets any results.

10-25 would be good

most spam bots dont get past 5-8 posts before its caught so 10's probably a good number

No problem.
I agree with ghrpdx, 2 posts is enough.

Off topic ... I'm always surprised when someone agrees with me. :D It happens so rarely.

i say go for it, but with at least 5 posts, because there was a couple of bots that had 2-3 posts...

I agree go for it.

I view this as an infringement of my rights as a person to have free speech. In so doing I feel you will alienate those that are only doing their job.

OK, someone had to say it. Do I believe tha crap? Nope. I'm so far past that 5-10 post limit it's definately not going to affect myself.

5 sounds like a reasonable number, the most I've seen from one person was three posts.

How are they moderated I'm confused. Are their posts emailed to a moderator for approval first or what? I'm thinking the first 3-5 posts should be watched closely after that post all the pictures of large breasts you want :-D or w/e body part you particularly enjoy ;)

great idea. It's been getting worse lately, so I say go for it.

I also agree, and as said above I also think 3-5 post is enough!

I would just be concerned to the quick access to such useful information. I am typically annoyed when i sign up for a BB and I have to wait for a day or so to get authorizations to post or to wait until my post is "approved".

Instead can you have the confirmation process for setting up an account be similar to buying tickets through ticketmaster... ie you have to accurately type in an obscured word... not sure if that is effective but it might limit the spammers

Or make a quiz. If you can answer 5 questions about the elantra, then they can post. :D

How are they moderated I'm confused. Are their posts emailed to a moderator for approval first or what?

Yes, basically I would move all the current Registered Users into a new Usergroup (named something different like "Members"). Then, for the original Registered Users usergroup we'd turn on the mod first X amount of posts features. Then the mods would be able to check every so often to see if there is any posts to be modded and they would decline or approve the posts. I mean, it might mean a 6 hour gap for the first couple posts, but that shouldn't be a problem for anyone if they are really interested in the site. That's why I say 5 posts max. After your 5th post you'd be moved in the Members usergroup and you'd be free to post. Like mentioned, most of the spam bots post once or twice.

I would just be concerned to the quick access to such useful information. I am typically annoyed when i sign up for a BB and I have to wait for a day or so to get authorizations to post or to wait until my post is "approved".

I agree with your first paragraph there, that's why I've never wanted to do it. It wouldn't really limit access, just limit posting access. There is "type the letters from the box into the text box" thing when you sign up and apparently that doesn't work good enough to fight off the mighty spambots.

I believe that the posts actually go into a 'holding que' that we would check then approve. Once approved they should fall into the thread in the time frame they were posted.

as long as you think it can be done without creating an excessive amount of work for yourself and the other moderators, then I think its a great idea.

htf do the spambots read that "type the letters from the box into the text box" thing? Isthere something in the page itself they can read or something.. anyway:
i think 5 would suffice, i would make it well known that only a small number of posts would be approved, becuase if i signed up and saw that everything had to be approved i would assume all posts are like that and most likely not go backto the site ... just my 2c

Nope.

EDIT- I just got back from out of town and I see all the spambots. I'm off work until next Monday so I should find some time to get this accomplished.

im in agreeance with this idea...

is there an easier way that it could be set up to work tho, so that there isnt extra work being made for the moderators?

I just ignore them and let the moderators delete them but if there was a way to get rid of it with out to much work for the moderators I say go for it

Well some of you might have noticed that I had the site down for about 20 minutes while I did this.

Seems like it was taken care of with no problems, however, if you notice anything different than usual please post in this thread so we can address the problems.

Thanks for being patient with me on this. Hopefully this will stop the spam bots.
