i have wanted to get the little 'dickie lights' in the front of my elantra ever since i brought it, so for my 21st birthday (5th dec for those playing along at home) my parents gave me the money for them and fitting to the car :D
i got them thru hyundai - so all genuine parts etc - but they cost a ****ing fortune!!!
$675 AU for the parts (everything needed - inc new combination stalk) and 3 hours fitting.
tho.. i did manage to score that at trade prices - otherwise it would have been $730 AU - which they did of couurse try to charge me...
I love them - im one of them annoying drivers that drive with them on all the time, even during the day.
i also scored this niiiice silver necklace thingo - which is really shinny and nice - have i mentioned nice yet? lol
i also scored 2 bday cakes - my work got me one, and my parents obv got me one - both where VERY nice too (choc mud cakes *drools*)
the lights are tho, a joint xmas and bday pressie - but im happy with that, coz ida never been able to buy them myself the way i go shopping for clothes.. lol
(oh, the reason i went to Hyundai for them and got ripped off, was coz im STILL having issues with my motor - and i am on my second one under warrenty, that i dont want to have anyone messing with anything under there, so that if hyundai come back to me next i take it in, and say coz someone has put the lights on, they could have caused the problem (basically - we aint fixing it now). i can turn around and tell them that it was THIER service department that did the install. method in my madness you see!)
itsa phone pic.. but at least a pic - i shall get around to taking better pics sometime soon!!!

Well, I hope it was a Happy Birthday for you. $700 bucks seems an awful lot to put into a 5 year old car for fog lights when you're experiencing a lot of engine trouble. But hey, it's your money and your car right? Hope you enjoy the hell out of those lights for that price!
If you`re happy, that `s all that counts. But I gotta say I could find a better way to spend seven hundy, Skipper. I`ve thought of removing the lil blanks and painting them  silver or summin, then I snap out of it..

 Going by his SN, I reckon he has an '06 Elantra. ;)
Congrat's on the foggies, definitely a nice present. I use mine regularly as well, although I did take out the fuse for the rear fogs, because I don't like blinding people behind me. ;)
I am also quite surprised at the cost, I got mine from an eBay seller and got my mechanic to do the install, but I can see where you're coming from with the warranty aspect. Although I doubt that they would attribute an engine problem to the installation of fog lights, at least you have peace of mind.

yeah the car is an 06 elantra - i might go check my profile thingo and make sure its right there
went out driving in the rain with em tonight - and i love them even more :D
sorta makes me think how did i manage without them in the past!?
the rear tail light foggies dont come on when i have the front ones on - coz after reading when Seinster wrote, i went out and checked.
yeah my 21st was good - i had to work tho :( so that kinda sucked and it was a busy day at work as well - but ya get that i guess lol
next expensive thing to be done to the elantra - cruise controll - then il be set for some big road trips im sure :D
edit - yes i did have it down as 2002, my bad! its definatly an 06 - as im sure is obvious hehe
musta been really tired (or drunk) when i filled that part out.. and punched the wrong number.

What's the legal drinking age in Australia? I turn 21 in a month and a half, and the only thing to look forward to about it is that I'll finally be able to (legally) drink!

So, did you drive around and turn the fog lights off and on to see the difference while you were driving?
Fog lights on ... fog lights off ... fog lights on ... fog lights off.
I did that when I first installed aftermarket fogs on my pickup. If they are quality lights with a good light pattern, they really do make a noticeable difference.
I'm going to try to round up the factory lights and my do my own wiring, relay, and switch for less than $150. I think it can be done.
UPDATE ...
You (Elantra06) inspired me to order a set of OEM fog lights just now. :D I was going to wait but figured wtf, I'll just do it. Now I can't wait for them to arrive so they can sit on my desk until I get the parts (wire, fuses, relay, switch, etc) to fire them up. I won't tell you what I paid for them ... hate to see a grown man cry. ;)

heheh - yeah, when i got them fitted, that night i was driving around and turning them on.. turning them off.. on off, wanted to see how good it would be to drive off just the fogs, then compare all the different light outputs and stuff like that...
i still do it - when it was raining yesturday on my way home from work - on and off, on and off - i think the other cars musta thought i was crazy! lol
yeah i know i got mega ripped with these lights... but at least they have the hyundai warrenty on them, and im happy with them (plus i didnt pay - my parents did lol)
thats the main thing - i love them.
ghrpdx - tell us plz... how much did you pay for the lights? would be interesting to know by how much [my parents] got ripped off! hehe

Keep in mind that I will need to do my own wiring of the lights, the relay, switch, and fuses and the switch will not be the OEM multi-function stalk. I'll be wiring a switch in the blank beside the instrument rheostat (after I remove whatever is behind there) and setting them up so they can be used when the headlights are not on, but the city lights are (first position of the headlight switch).
I paid $92 for the light assemblies, shipped. I will still need to buy bulbs and the other various parts so I figure I'll still come in under $150, all inclusive.
Actually, I think it's cool that your parents did this for you ... maybe you can ask for a turbo next!?
06elantra
12-12-2006, 04:34 AM
that sounds pretty reasonable pricing - actually DAMN GOOD pricing, even considering all the extra lil bits needed.
haha yaeh i could ask for a turbo for my 22nd... buuuuutm by that stage i might have allready DONE that... (nothing planned as yet, but an option nontheless im sure)

I've done aftermarket fog lights and aftermarket wiring. I would suggest that if you do your own wiring and switch, to make a new plastic piece to replace the current blank in the dashboard; that way, if you ever run across a multifunction switch with the fog light switch in it, you can restore your dash to original (that's what I ended up doing).
I did a DIY (http://www.dfwhyundais.com/diy/FogLights/DIY-FogLights.html) about how I installed my aftermarket fog lights. If you're doing your own wiring, some of that might be helpful.
I'm willing to maybe even part with my old switch plate I made for the dash. I made it with two switches because with a hatchback, you can wire up rear fogs as well (I think you have a sedan, so this wouldn't work). If you are interested in my switch, let me know and I can rework it to make it a single switch. If you're interested, I think we'll be able to agree on a fair price (i.e., cheap; I'm not looking to make money on this).
By the way, including the switch I got from the junk yard, I think I paid less than $80 for the whole job, including the aftermarket fog lights.
My switches look like this (I even made little fog light icons for them):
http://www.dfwhyundais.com/diy/FogLights/Images/Switches.jpg
As for whether the aftermarket lights look any good, you tell me. I think they look just like OEM, except that I got the yellow tint (which I prefer with functional fog lights).

ghrpdx, also keep in mind that he paid 700.00 Australian Dollars. Not US. I paid about the same as you did for my factory lights, but I dropped a little more coin on the factory switch. It's the only way to go imo. I don't want to look into a new car and see toggle switches.

^^ Really? They use Australian dollars in Australia? :D I knew that. In fact, I have friends in Australia so I even know what the exchange rate is. That $700 AUD is still about $550 USD. That's a lot for fog lights. ;)
I'm going to be very selective in regard to the switch I choose. I definitely don't want a toggle switch that lights up like an aircraft landing light. Below are some rocker switches which I am considering. I will mount it beside the instrument dimmer rheostat. If I go with a switch that does not have a green or amber indicator, I will set it up so the fog light indicator in the instrument bezel is lit when the fog lights are on. It's quite simple to do. I just have to make up my mind.

I can't see spending anywhere near that kind of money for fog lights. You could probably have gotten some HID's installed for that price and the overall light output of the car would have been better. Thats just me though, I'm cheap, what can I say I drive a hyundai.

IMO - money (that wasnt even mine - which is the BEST kinda of money) well spent on them
EDIT - the foggies i had put on my car... ARE H.I.D.s....
nothing wrong with cheap cars - this is the most expensive (new) car i have brought, and im more than happy with its quality (at the mo anyhow! lol)
they DO make a difference to light output - i wonder how i survived without them now lol!
ghrpdx - i would use the first toggle switch image you have shown there.. looks a bit tidier and might fit better with the rest of the car / keep the interior clean and the like

I don't know how people can just blow money up the wazu because its their parents and they don't care... ITS YOUR PARENTS! You should care. If you can save them a few buck, you should. I could see if your parents were rich, but lets face it you drive a hyundai. I couldn't imagine just blowing my parents money because they said I could. Oh well.
You also state that your happy with the quality of the car yet your on your second engine? Sure. Whatever floats your boat.
I don't know about the law in Australia and whether the Magnuss Act (spelling?) applies there but it would be pretty hard for a dealer to be able to prove that the installation of fog lights caused you to need a new engine.

I'd go for the one with no indicator and wire in the dash indicator. It's more OEM-ish.
i actually really really like the pic of the switch posted up above. when i get fogs i may look into something similiar. i think looks Really nice and i bet you can get em pretty cheap.

hmmm.. .someone seems a little.. somewhat annoyed.
seems i shall have to try to clarrify ones self - even tho its not necissary
yes i agree - a lot of money to spend on a car, but they are something that i wanted, and if my parents didnt buy them for me, then i would have brought them myself at a later stage.
what i am getting at there, is the goodness and GENEROSITY (spelling?) that they showed for my 21st bday
and yes, on my second short motor, but overall i am still happy with the car.
however, if i was on my second short motor, that I had to pay for, then it would be a different story - yay for Warrenties - even better when they are honoured of course
(on the note of the second motor too, the car still makes the noise so it shall be once more returning to Hyundai for them to try for a THIRD time to get it - and it shall be returning again and again until it is fixed :))
i prolly shudda mentioned that the 'group' "Hyundai, Toyota, Mazda all trading on the one corner, under the collective title as "Autocorner" - coz its on a corner lol) are VERY WELL KNOWN in this region of Australia for thier shocking after sales service.
my ex bf works in the service department of another car yard ("honeycombs autos - Kia, Landrover & Volvo at that yard) and made sure to tell me that they will try ANYTHING here, to try and get out of a warrenty claim.
hence the buying the lights from the dealership.
My 'kit' they put in, did come with the new combination stalk - or did i allready mention that earlier?
i like the OEM stalk, coz (absolutly NO offence to anyone here that has done it) the OEM ones in this case IMO look better than a toggle switch or a pole switch under the dash - but yes, my own opinion - when done right, 'custom' switches look hell good
:)
