What is this? Is it air going into the engine bay, or is this where the intake gets its air from?

Where the intake gets it's air from.

It's connected underneath the battery to a Resonator box, held in by 3 10mm nuts which can be removed if you've gone SRI.

So the air goes in here, goes all the way around through those tight areas just to get to the air box? wow that is bright! I took out the connector between the box and the resonator so it is going straight into the box. I think that i am going to tweak on the resonator and route some stuff so air come in through this and blows into the engine bay.
You have to take off the tire to get to the resonator dont you?

Yes, you have to remove the tire, the wheel well liner, and to make things even easier and so you can see, take out the driver's side headlight. Believe me, it's very easy, and if you have the tools handy you can do this in about 20 minutes.

The box weighs more than 5 pounds, closer to 10 pounds, you'd be better off just removing all of it than trying to adapt it for another use. Remember, every 100 pounds is .10 of a second off of your quarter mile, if you race. And if you don't race, you'll have more room for other stuff or whatever.

you dont need to take out the tire, just turn your wheel all the way, and pul back your fender liner.

also the res box is 2 10 mm bolts if i can remember?

Yeah i popped the tire off and took the liner out. That dern thing was a pain in the a** to wiggle out! whole lot of room in there now. I am going to get some ducting and attach it to my fog light hole and have it go into the engine bay to blow some cooler air in there.
Anyone done this? Will it make a difference?

the trick is to take the headlight off.

now lets see how you would find taking your oil pan out and taping it with a 9/16" NPT then RTV sealing it back onto the block making sure you don't screw **** up.
