Alright, I started on my new amp rack today.
http://guuzu.com/kewlkat/image/3056/large.jpg
This is a mock up of what I'm doing.
What I am trying to acheive: minimize seen wiring, and be able to screw this **** into the seat without a problem, since when I tried installing it I realized that the seat isn't made to support weight on all of the backing, since there are some parts that have no support to screw into, and sadly the placement I wanted to give to my hardware wasn't working.
I cut a 1/2" MDF scrap piece I had to fit the rear of the seat (since its 60/40, this goes on the 60 side, which is the passenger side).
Then, I made holes for the wiring that goes behind the panel. For the wiring, I made grooves in the MDF so that the wiring can be tucked inside the panel, thus sitting flush on the back. Man was that a PITA since the only thing I have that could do the job was a dremel and it was doing a bad job. I had to do it the old school way with a chisel and a hammer! Hahaha!
On the pic you can kind of see a mock up of what I am trying to do. Capacitator wired in parallel with the amp, with the minimum wiring shown. I woud be able to hide more of it if it had been smaller (like 8ga or something) but I don't want to purchase new wires and so I am continuing to use the 4ga I have in big quantities in my garage.
Now, the only thing left to basically do is crimp some connectors, and find some carpet. Now, this is where I need your help. Where the heck do I buy this kind of carpet? You know the kind that is used for sub boxes?
What is it called exactly? And where can I buy it?
Let me know what you think and if you have any tips/comments about the amp rack itself.
Once the rack is done I will be getting into my fiberglassing project. I have done f/g before but not for a "custom" application like this. Expect a lot of pics.
BTW, sorry for the crappy quality, I took the pic at night in a hurry since I want to sleep soon :)

For the carpet, I believe I saw some at Crappy Tire. You could probably get some at a shop like Bouclair, or something like that. Nice project you got going on! Love the amp by the way ;) !

Thanks! Will try Crappy tire today after school.
The amp rack isn't so bad since it doesn't require that much work, the real challenge will be the f/g molded sub in the trunk.
How many layers of f/g need to be laied for a sub box?

From what I've read, 3 to 4 layers are sufficient. Just ensure that there are no air bubbles between the layers.

where are you mounting your amp rack?

quote from first post:

:)
Also... Today I picked up all the shizznit I needed for the FG box, it's not so shabby, didn't cost as much, about like 45$ and I got 2L of resin, a LOT of glass mat, a LOT of brushes, vinyl gloves, and breathers.
And I tried finding some carpet for the box but wasn't able to, the search continues... (Yes I checked caca tire)
UPDATE:
(sort of.......)
Well Everything was going well, I had the first layer of fiberglass that I put on with foil into the corner of the trunk.
Then.... like 30 mins later... it all fuked up... the resin/fg was forced down from the sides because of the gravity and the whole ****ing thing bunched up and is now good for garbage.
This is when it was starting to come back down, you can see the darker spots:

Now its 15x worse.........
I just scrapped like 40 oz of resin and 5-6 sq ft of f/g :( :( :(
Any tips? I guess I can just do the whole bottom (was perfect), then like a couple of inches on the side, let the whole thing dry, add another "level" to go higher up, let it dry, etc etc.
I'm pretty sure the excessive weight caused by the resin and fg on top was just puching everything down.
DAMN YOU GRAVITY!
Now im just waiting on it to dry so i can put it in the garbage can.
Enough fumes for tonight though this will have to wait for another day.
UPDATE #2:
Alright I scrapped what was done until now.
I will be redoing this, perhaps tomorrow night.
I will be putting a small coat of resin, setting the f/g mat on it, and leaving it to dry without the glass being drenched in resin. That way, at least, the f/g would be just stuck where it's supposed to be, and then once everything is dry I can just add more resin, and once that's dry I can take the mold part out of the car and work much more confortably on my table.
Also the MDF ring for the woofer is done, I can't wait!! dammit!!! LOL!!
no idea about the fg, but as for carpet if you didnt already dish out $$ i would go to a junkyard and look for a car with some nice black or dark grey carpet in the trunk and use that. Thats what i did when i had a amp rack a while back

lol...
i need carpet for both the rack and the box... i need kind of a lot, i dont think i can find that much in a car trunk... ?
You should try addison, they sell that kind of carpet and it's cheap.

Or any car stereo store can sell it too, but most of the time it will cost much more.
You can also use that same carpet to mold the bottom of your sub box.
That carpet soaks resin like hell, so it will be hard as a rock, i never made a box that way but i got books talking about that process.
All you have to do is put that carpet in the bottom of the trunk, fix it so it will stand up even with the added resin weight.
put as much resin as possible, remember that it will soak a lot of resin.
You can even put some more fiber glass mat to make it stronger once it's dry.

that's a good idea. I can just pin the carpet up with something.
I dont care if it cant take the axact shapes and creases of the thing anyways. Just so it can fit nicely inside the area and i can gain volume without the box protruding too much.
If addison sells it then madisson should carry it too on deslaurentides, its closer to me, i iwll check it out this week when i have time.

try to get some from a local shop around you im sure they got some layin around. ive never looked for it, but im suprised that its hard to find.
youve tried home depot and lowes im assuming?
I think its just called "trunk carpeting". maybe you can fine some carpet like that at a local carpet/furniture store?

i didnt try home depot and we dont have lowes here :)
i think you missed one very import step or didn't add enough, Catalyst did you use it???? it make the resin set if used correctly you wouldn't of had a problem. the Catalyst makes the fibreglass set it should set before the B!tch called gravity starts to sit on it.
i thought you were going to use mdf front and bottom and just mould the rest of the box into the corner? the less fg you use the easier :P

NO NO NO!!! your doing your fiberglass all wrong!!!! Just turn your car over onto its side and then the fiberglass will stay up!!!! geeeezee!!! some people have no common sense!

Bwahahahahahahahaha Nice one
Also I did use the catalyst, I think the main problem was the fact that I was working outside in -10 deg C weather.
I just cleared my garage so my car can get into it again and I will attempt this inside of the heated garage.
Though this willl take a while because I am now having a coolant leak on the hose unde the exhaust manifold so I willl have to take the turbo off in the next few days and I will use the chance to change a few things here and there.
So basically the project is on hold for a good 1-2 weeks.
UPDATE:
Ok I lied it seems, I took the car in the garage right now so it can become room temp to make things easier for me. While it's chilling in there getting warmer I had nothing to do so I started carpetting the amp rack.
I found the carpet at maddisson, I bought 6' x 1 yard for around 8$. Not bad! And I grabbed some o-ring terminals at the same time which I needed for this, plus sub box terminals, and a push button switch for my intercooler sprayer. Wow, that place has nice prices!
ok maybe add more catalyst and work fast before it goes solid
