So heres whats going down. My girlfriend owes a 2000 Hyundia Elantra GLS i bought her a nice alpine cd player for her birthday. got the wireing harness and everything. but i dont know how to take the center console apart so that i cant remove the stock radio and install the new aftermarket cd player. shes getting mad cause she wants it done now. i think im missing a screw or somthing. cause it just wont come off.

if anyone could explain to me how to get the center console off so i can do the install that would be great. or know of a site where i can find out some detialed instructions on how to do that. everything i have found so far is for a 2001+ elantra i cant seem to find anything on the 2000. oh and its a GLS if that changes anything. and a automatic.

like i said i dont know alot about these cars. i mostly have had probe gt's and eclipses my whole life oh and a monte carlo ss and now i own a 97 sebring. so yeah no clue about the elantras.

well thanks for all your help. also i know someones going to say do a search yep i did and did find it. thanks

welcome to the site

isnt it the same in the xd's?

heres the link for the xd's
http://www.elantraxd.com/DIY/dashremoval.php

-make sure to check out the do it yourself section at the top

also this site has a great "search" feature also accessable from the top menu

For specific 2000 elantra stuff do this:
****Clipped from another site***** (FAQ FARM)
**Begin Clip**
Goto www.hmaservice.com (Hyundai webtech 2000) Set the Model Year and engine drop-downs on the top of the page and then click Search on the far right. Try entering the search kewords "dashboard", "interior" and/or "radio" (leave all items as the default values)

["dashboard" worked for my 2004 Elantra, and "radio" for my 2000 Elantra]

You should get a "Removal" or "Instruction" document that you can click on. This contains all the details of removing the dash assembly and radio.

Enjoy!
**end clip**

That outa do ya!

From WebTech:

AUDIO
1. Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
2. Remove the shift lever boot and the rheostat assembly using a (-) driver.

Ugzz, this won't work, the J2 dash is quite different!!!

RIP, here is the instructions :

First you have to pop the auto lever plastic boot with a flat screw driver

Then you have to remove the light dimmer

Under the light dimmer you have a screw, you also have another one at the bottom of the dash facia, behind the lever boot.

Then you have to detach the heater control cable, webtech say to detach it from the dash facia but mine snaped as ther is no space to do so, so the easiest way to detach the heater control cable is to look just beside the accel. pedal, there is a white plastic part with a metal wire attached to it, press the round pin side so that the wire will detach itself from the plactic plate.

After that you can take the dash out and then change the radio!

Good luck with that! :D

EDIT : lollll Doohickie, you were faster then me ... and webtech is wrong at number 4 ... as I said I did that and there were no space to unmount the control cable from there and the holding bracket snaped, cost me nothing 'cause I took one at the junkyard and they didn't charged me that (I had for 120$ in other parts ... so for 1$ they gaved me that and other small goodies :P )

WebTech is up and down today. I moved the pics over to my photobucket account and linked to them there.

To make sure you're disconnecting the right cable, I would suggest moving the heater/AC/vent controls to various settings while looking under the dash toward the center console, and disconnecting the cables you see moving. On my car (2005), I'm pretty sure there are cables on both sides of the console.

In fact the J2 use only one cable for the HVAC, the rest is vacuum based, so you CAN'T be mistaken, it's the white plastic thingy beside the accel pedal, belive me, that's the only cable you'll find there on the J2 ;)
