A thought I've been tossing around in my head for awhile now and it's the only reason I've stayed away from FI. How do you guys meet smog requirements? Just find a shop and a guy willing to take $200 on the side?
Is there a difference with emissions between T/C and S/C?
I can't see the point of having it and having to remove it every year for emissions...

a s/c is smog legal for cali. as for maryland, if you have your cat in place and aren't throwing any codes you'll pass emissions no problem. that and your gas tank must pass the pressurization test.

On my last car years ago they never tested the tank pressure I don't think. They just stuck the sniffer up the tail pipe and ran it through all the gears.

A turbo charger for the Elantra will never be smog legal in Cali because it moves/removes the first cat. A supercharger CAN be legal if the company who produces it goes through the process to get it CARB approved.

And Alpine did then if I'm understanding Cypher's certainty that it's legal in Cali?

My cousin works at the hyundai dealership, he told me just to ask for him every time I take mine. And I get free inspections for the life of the car sine I bought it from them. The guys at that dealership are cool with mods and such, so as long as no codes are present I guess it would be okay.
BTW, My county doesn't require emissions yet :D

Well here in NC as long as you have a cat, muffler, and no CEL codes for either 96 & up or 97 & up, not sure if the year changed, you basically pass of course lights have to work. but in some counties they don't check the obd2 port, so they just have visual inspections

I really doubt that alpine spent the money it would take to make the kits smog legal, so no. I don't believe that they're legal in Cali.

the s/cs for the tibs are smog legal if they are non-intercooled. so i'm assuming if they did it for the tib s/c then they did it for teh elantra too.

I'll have to just email them to be sure. =)

Right now the 2.0L Kits are not CARB certified. They will pass a smog test but may not pass a visual inspection.
sooo there ya have it. it'll pass smog but possibly not the visual if they are ultra strict.

A visual inspection is part of every california emissions test. So even though it might pass the sniffer, if there's no CARB number on the supercharger itself, it will fail.

Lucky!
Up here no one really gives enough of a **** to actually check much. As long as you have no codes, an operational gas tank and a cat they can see, they'll pass you right through.

Wow, I certainly won't pass when I move to NC. Both O2 sensors are bad, faulty MAF, check engine light won't go away, only 1 cat, soon to be no cats. Oh well, guess I'll have to find that person who takes cash on the side.

There is no visual check in cali. Not when you go to get it smogged. The only time you get a visual check is if you get pulled over. BUT! In California, seeing or hearing an aftermarket muffler or intake is grounds for a full legal car inspection now. CHP in some of the big cities carry portable sniffers in their cars, i dont think that they are very sensitive though.

Not sure who told you that one, but they were mistaken. I went to a technical school in cali, and one of the classes was on smog inspections. A shop can get in a lot of trouble if they pass a car that shouldn't have passed with the visual.

I'm in NY and I always go in winter when everythings covered in snow, like now. No one wants to look under the car, and as long as there's no codes, your good. Heck, I had to go back a second time cause I hadn't driven far enough yet after installing the headers.
