I have a used GLS 04 with 34K on it. It was bought at 15K, I also have an 06 new.

What should I do to replace the automatic transmission fluid? Drain 5 quarts or have it flushed by AAMCO?

Both cars have transmission screens right? No filter to change?

I would imagine draining 5 quarts of transmission fluid is easy, in comparsion to removing a big transmission filter on other cars.

I am going to send the car to the local mechanic for a coolant change, I can ask him to document an inspection of the transmission fluid, although it looks like people on this forum don't think you should try and go the longhaul with the transmission fluid to 105K.

How long will the spark plugs last in the 04?

thank you very much

FYI: There's been a whole lot of debate on ATF fluid, with the general consensus being to only replace the transmission fluid with genuine Hyundai-brand fluid. Apparently the 'other' brands don't meet Hyundai's warranty standards.

Can't really help with any of the other questions, but just thought I'd bring that up.

Doing a drain and fill is basically what a lot of dealerships (including the ones here in Indy) do. It's about as simple as it gets. Loosen drain plug. When it stops coming out fill it back up. Typically take 4-5 quarts. ONLY use Hyundai/KIA SP-III. NOTHING else.

That sounds like a homerun. Thanks.

One thing I did, was look for service specials at nearby Hyundai dealerships. I was able to get the trans flush for $100.

^ And 5 qts of fluid will cost about $35. So that's $65 in the pocket.

My fault, I was talking about the major service interval where you do the flush. Didnt realize you were only at 34K.

Shipping fluids would cost a fortune because of the DOT's HAZMAT procedures. A tube of paint (touch up) is $24 for me to ship. I can't imagine what the weight of the fluid would be!

Sounds good people, can you think of anything else for me to do to my 34K 04GLS other than draining the tranny fluid and coolant; things to do in terms of general maintainance. tks

MAybe plugs. You might want to pull a couple and look at them to see how they are holding up.
