Ok so its not a very good picture but you should all get the idea behind it, and dont mind the Spongebob carpet, I do have kids you know!!! I hope to get up to the hobby shop tomorrow night and pull the engine, I will bring it home and do the installs here, take my block and manifold away on Tuesday for tapping and then put it back in on Wednesday...will see what happens.

So far my gauges are in the pillar and mounted, HIDs are in, plug wires are also in...its been to cold to do anything else. Obviously there is a lot more to the turbo kit then that but I couldnt be bothered to drag it all out.

why would you pull your entire engine to tap lines and im assuming install the head gasket...?

slow 2K2GT
02-25-2007, 11:00 PM
to install a new water pump, timing belt and all the pulleys, not much room on the side of the engine for that, plus its easier to put the clutch and flywheel on at that time too. Oh yeah and of course the head gasket

evan938
02-25-2007, 11:07 PM
why are you doing all that? didnt you buy the car new?

slow 2K2GT
02-25-2007, 11:10 PM
no its an 03, I picked it up with 80,000Km on it, so I dont want to risk the timing belt going on me. When I installed my cam sprocket the timing belt that was on it had some wear and cracks so I just stored it and said I would take care of it later. This way I can get everything done at once and not have to work around other components.

It doesn't matter how it came out, as long as it's out right! Good luck luck with the project, and POST SOME PICS!!!

I think im gonna end up pulling the tranny now and mounting it to the engine so I can slide them back in together, it was pretty damn tight last night.

My "ever so willing to work on the car wife" is gonna come up next time to help me so I will have her install my engine mounts and hang the new exhaust, I still need my down pipe from Mahonroy before the exhaust will bolt right in but I can at least get it hung. She can start removing the front bumper for intercooler mounting and I will work on taking the engine apart. Once thats done, next visit I hope to install the lowering springs and put the engine back in its home...then its wait for the Unichip to return. Boo!

Ok pics coming tomorrow...Today I got the clutch, flywheel, water pump and IM off. I plan to put the Alpine stuff into my new IM so it can be ready to go. Tomorrow night is head removal, exhaust, engine mounts, cluth/flywheel install, and perhaps front bumper removal.

we're doing a very similar project. im swaping in a motor with less miles, going with the alpine turbo, and doing clutch as well. looking forward to pics and advice from you. What kind of exhaust is that?

slow 2K2GT
02-27-2007, 06:09 PM
ARK N2 single. My advice as it stands now would be to pull the motor and tranny all at once as space is really limited.

02-27-2007, 06:39 PM
o i am. im swapping the whole motor. so when i pull mine out i'll pull the motor i'll do the clutch, swap the head, add the P/P IM, do the turbo, all at once. should take a few days or so.

Yeah I figured about 3 days for mine but getting my engine in two major pieces is where I go tomorrow so I hope Thursday I can get the tapping done and have it completed by saturday...UNFORTUNATELY I have no Unichip its in transit to Dave for a reflash right now. I am hoping that I can stick with stock compression levels until such time that it returns, and drive the car back to my house without generating any boost at all, the drive is only about 4km so I think it can be done. When the Unichip arrives back to me I will do that install.

awsome progress :)

I wish I would've done everything at once as well. It sucs taking eveything aprt every time you get something new.

I'm gonna be pulling my engine soon as well. Were there a lot of connections on the block itself? or more on the head? I've only ever pulled the head so, pulling the block with it will be the only new thing to me.

Also, make sure to de-torque and re-torque the head in the correct pattern and using the correct toorque sequences as well. I did all this wrong the first time and it caused me to end up with a warped head and oil in the coolant and all that fun stuff.

02-27-2007, 09:58 PM
yeah I will be sure of that! I will post up pics tomorrow night of the progress, I really hope to get the head pulled off and get that nightmare taken care of. Like I said im not brave enough to tap my own block though im told its really easy, I will call some local shops around town tomorrow and see if they can do it so I can get it back the same day, perhaps even wait for it to be done.

if you're afraid of tapping the block then just go ahead and tap the oil pan. Thats what I did, since I wasnt to sure about tapping the block either. (was going to, but didnt have anything small enough to drill with. Just make sure if you tap the oil pan to tap it high so you don't get any restrictions with it.

The only thing I've noticed with tapping the pan is that since it's farther from the spot on the block they tell you to tap, that makes the line that they included in your kit will be shorter as well. So the other thing you want to make sure of is tapping the best spot on the pan to keep it from rubbing against the d/p. And if it is touching that you wrap it with header wrap or something.

slow 2K2GT
02-27-2007, 11:02 PM
Nah im gonna have the block tapped by someone who knows. I thought about tapping the pan but decided not to, I also need a T-fitting for the oil feed line so I can put my oil pressure line in there as well. Tomorrow morning will take me to buy an oil filter, enough coolant to fill, 3L of 75W90 for tranny, getting taps done, hopefully tomorrow night I can get my motor together with the block ready to be re-installed.

Lots to do so my wife is coming to help, shes gonna do the mounts and the exhaust, perhaps I can get her turning a wrench too.

you should only need i think its 2.2 or 2.3 quarts to fill it up.

lol, i wish my wife was willing to help me. the most she did once was try to find a bolt i dropped ( that was caused by her interuppting me in the first place LOL)

yeah its around that. I got all the numbers written down, its like my car grocery list.

tapping the block was mad easy, and would be especially easy with the engine out. I tapped it with the block in, but I had a 90 degree drill, and all the bits and taps I needed.

but I guess if you dont have the bits and taps, it would probably be cheaper to have a machine shop do it.

I got another few minutes with the car so I took off the front bumper and test fitted the IC. The bracket doesnt fit so I need to modify it but thats fine, that isnt my main concern right now. Tonite I need to get that motor into two pieces so I can get it out.

Ok well it was a good night for progress. We got the front bumper off, engine in two pieces, mounts done, idle/tension pulleys changed and a start with the FMIC. Turns out im going to have to make a bracket to properly fit the IC as the one supplied by Alpine doesnt fit the IC they sent out. Well as mentioned heres some pics.

the elantra is cake compared to other engines. my brothers 2.9 pissed me off to no end lol then again it was a REALLY old motor. good luck donnie!

NY2002ElantraGT

o i know the motor is rather simple in design. im just worried about bolts breaking or stripping or loosing bolts. or forgeting where they go! haha

Cypher
02-28-2007, 11:52 PM
i wouldn't worry about breaking bolts, unless you're just an idiot. only bolts i've managed to break were the exhaust manifold bolts on my brothers truck.

slow 2K2GT
03-01-2007, 09:12 AM
I may have forgotten where some of the bolts go but I have taken things apart so many times I know what 90% of them are for and where they go. I am only putting the block back in tomorrow, one thing at a time right, then I can put the head on once thats done.

Wow my guys works fast, I dropped my block, IM and turbo manifold off this morning for tapping and he should be done shorty. Nice! This should allow me to finish my job up, I just want to get an engine back into the car, damn!

Tomorrow nights activity is to get the block back in place with its attachments like the AC compressor mounted back on as well. Anything more than that is a bonus.

So I got all my stuff back from the machine shop today, unfortunately I cant work on the car tonite we had a major snow issue. But tomorrow I am putting in a solid 8 hours there so I should get everything finished by the end of the day. Fingers crossed! I will post up progress pics later!

Yeah I know, and now I know how it feels to go back to one vehicle...I need to finish this project so my wife gets off my back. Not only is my car off the road but I took her SUV from her as well, its been a stressful few days.

I sympathize 110% :D. Thats why I had to buy myself a daily driver, otherwise I would not hear the end of it until it was done causing me to rush through it.

Well tonite was a good one. I got the whole engine back together with IM and turbo mounted up. Engine went back in after an even bigger mess then when it came out but its in. All four mounts are off eng/trans are being held up by an engine hoist. I managed to push off one of the cv joint boots (?) isnt cracked or ripped so I will just put it back over. On Monday I will finish bolting the power plant down, connect all the hoses and sensors, exhaust will get hung and car will get towed back to my house.

Now when I timed the engine it was in two separate parts, so I put the #1 piston at TDC by lining up the the timing belt sprocket, cams were set by the notch on the head. When I put the belt on and tightened it down and put the lower timing belt cover on the sprocket notch pointed at BTDC 10, the cams were still good to go. When I put the crank pulley on the timing mark lined up at TDC. I turned the engine over about 12 times and there was no abnormal noise, good to go I think. My timing belt is major *** tight now that the head spacer is on there, the belt is brand new so it may need to stretch. Umm what else. Oh yeah this project is really starting to suck. We will see what happens, I left my camera up there but I did get a lot of pics so hopefully I can get in there tomorrow and get it, if not then there will be a bunch of pics all at the same time.
