I just bought one yesterday.. and this is my first time using this kind of detector... so.. I don't understand what x,ka,k means.. and how come it doesn't detect cops or ambulances?? is it only work for those speed guns? I have Vector 955....

I know x, ka, and K are all types of signals that police departments use. Basically every speed gun shoots at least 1 type of signal. Most have more than one. So your detector only will catch when they are using x, ka, or k. All radar detectors only work when the gun is on or sending out a signal. Normally the cheaper models only tell you when they are shooting your car and of course by that time, it is to late.

Well... Mine singel X alot when I pass by seveneleven or any 24hours market... is it because of their alerm? or door sensors?? Also.. a ambulance with lights on passed by me and my detector didn't respond... Isn't detectors also detect those emergence vehicles with lights on?

I have heard of some people complaining about their detectors going off around stores and stuff and I always heard it was because of the "radar" that the door sensor uses. The only fix I have heard of is to lower the radar's sensitivity if it has that option. I have heard that detectors are to "warn" you of emergency vehicles, but I have never understood how that works. They don't send out a radar signal. I wouldn't ever see a point of having that on an emergency vehicle.

Unless you live in one of the two/three states that still actively use X band guns, it's fairly safe to disable that band detection. Leaving you with K and Ka which are commonly used. Laser is unfortunately becoming more popular in certain areas as well. Unfortunate because it's deathly accurate, however, it's useless in traffic areas as it requires a direct line of sight to pinpoint the target. However watch for this in speed traps, largely used by motocycle cops as there's no glass deflection.

Now a "quality" detector will warn you far enough in advance for corrective action as most all PD's have the 1/4 mile rule. Meaning they have to trap you within a 1/4 mile as that's deemed the "effective" range of their guns to be accurate. That rule doesn't help you if they're hiding, unless they're hitting cars infront or behind you before you get there.

There are a couple good radar detector websites out there, google for them as I don't recall offhand. I personally own a Escort Passport, and would only trust Escort and Belltronics. Now prettymuch the same company. Escort had the best detector first, then Belltronics uses the same/similar tech in their highend model. The only difference is one talks to you and only comes in red where the otherone doesn't talk and comes in red and blue lcds.

Learn your detector and your surroundings and their 'common everyday' hits, knowing that can help you out when an uncommon alert comes by in a common area. Also never completely rely on your detector, you have eyes and hopefully common sense, use them. =)
