I just got this magazine from my dealer called "Overdrive" about Hyundai announcements, features, etc, for Spring 2007 and I was reading a test-drive article on the Santa Fe this is quoted from it

To help the Santa Fe go toe-to-toe with it's rivals there's an upgraded version of the old model's 2.7 litre V6 as the base powerplant. With 185 horsepower and 183 lb-ft of torque at your beck and call, this V6 delivers 12 more horsepower and five extra foot-pounds of torque, while offering increased fuel economy.

I checked Hyundaicanada.com and those numbers were up there for the Santa Fe. When did they upgrade it those extra ponies should help some...But what I don't get is that the upgraded engine isn't in the 2007 Tiburon or the tuscon. Anybody else hear about this upgrade? because I just found out today.

I'll try to get a scan of the page tomorrow, if my scanner will work with vista, didn't try it yet

It's the new 2.7L Mu, not the old 2.7L Delta.

The Santa Fe got the Mu because it's a new vehicle that was designed to use it. I'm guessing there are some differences in design that prohibit it from being 'dropped into' the existing vehicles using the Delta (Tib, Tucson). Since the Santa Fe also uses the 3.3L Lambda, I'm guessing the 'fit' or 'connection' or whatever on the Mu is probably similar to the Lambda for this compatability, and not similar to the Delta it is replacing.

I haven't looked at the 2 engines side-by-side to know exactly what is different, but I know the new engine has CVVT, and the Delta did not.

I'm sure the extra couple ponies plus the CVVT helps in both fuel mileage and pickup.

Did the fuel mileage ratings change?

so no one really knows the difference? sure its not just a reworked delta?

Back when the initial info from the Mu came out, we all assumed it was just a Delta with CVVT. Someone, don't remember who, that was 'in' with Hyundai, claimed it is a mostly-new engine. After all, they still called the Beta II a Beta II when they added CVVT.

IIRC, the compression ratio went up as well. That's where the extra hp comes from. The CVVT smoothes out that wierd curve but other than that, externally the two look pretty similar imo.

Here you are, the official Hyundai training describing the differeces between the Delta and Mu.

Go Here,
http://www.hmatraining.com/HMA_2007_CM_NewModel/main.html
Click Index,
Click Mu Engine

I went through the first half. The main differences are the Mu has:
CVVT
MLAs
Delphi Electronic Throttle Control
Coil-over-plug design
Graphite coated pistons
different piston squish design
ECM/TCM combined into PCM
Return-less fuel rail

The main difference between the Mu and Lambda 3.3 (as stated at the site) is the Mu has a timing belt. Only the Lambda and Theta engines use a timing chain.

so the mu and delta are essentially the same. just tweaked a bit.

Yes and no. If you go through all the slides, you'll see there's quite a bit differen't, more than just 'tweaked', but not a total ground-up new engine.
