Hey Everyone,

I'm putting a feeler out there. We're thinking of offering a user programmeable piggyback ECU upgrade for existing Kit owner, as well as making it an option for new customers. For existing customers we would charge 250-300 USD in conjunction with sending back your old Unichip. The upgrade kit would include the Perfect Power SMT-6 ECU, tuning cable and software. What does everyone think?

hows wiring and such? Is this something that can come with a base tune (like the unichip) and then we can get it fine tuned? Werent people having problems getting the SMT to work right? or is that another tuner I'm thinking of?

PS. Dave, pm me back so I can get my unichip out to you :)

You want my honest opinion? I think it is a ripoff.

The perfect power has released the smt7 and was even selling the smt-6 units TWO FOR ONE (300$ a piece for retail) to dealers not too long ago.

If you check ebay the unichip upgrades for other cars are up to 800$ when I can get a brand new smt6 for less than 600$ with more than one map.

I think it should be a fair trade if it was like 30$ for the exchange. You guys can make more money selling the second hand unichips vs buying brand new smt6's.

I just want to know this: would the smt be loaded with anything? And wiring instructions? As in, not like when I got the kit and had to figure out the unichip wiring myself as the whole instruction sheet was wire color based for a spectra which is totally different but more "pin-based" diagrams?

Actually the SMT-6 has proven more reliable when compared to the SMT-7. In most cases people end up having to use both systems just to get the 7 to work right.
Retail on the SMT-6 Tuner kit is 410 plus shipping. The Unichips your talking about are the PlugnPlay kits based on the new UniQ chip. The older 'classic' unichips we use have much less functionality when compared to the SMT-6. Don't get me wrong, they work fine for what we use them for but the SMT-6 can do so much more. Progressive Nitrous injection, multiple switchable maps, user-programmeable, shift light functionality.
Would 250 USD shipped be more reasonable, With chip trade in?

Well you know us hyundai owners, the cheaper, the better ;)

But I just think that the Unichip should be worth much more than just what you are offering it for... If you can go a bit lower then I will be in for sure, I have been thinking about just purchasing the smt6 kit myself.

Oh, by the way, I have denisst which is local to me that I was talking about, they just made a turbo box that goes with the smt6 and tricks the hyundai ECU in constant open loop from what I understand which gives you MUCH more functionality, I suggest you guys get in touch with him, they have been working on this unit for more than a year from what I gather.

i personally wouldnt mind paying that price. But does it come pretuned? or will you guys simply be a "supplier" of the smt-6? And would it be plug-n-play or will we have to take care of wiring?

Yeah I was wondering if you could make it so we can just plug it into the wiring that already exists in the bay

or..... just some easy soldering using the harness we already have, to avoid going into the sensors and whatnot again

Alright I just called you guys for the turbo, talked to John about this at the same time.

He said you are going to be offering pretuned maps, but still need to tune and whatnot... so this will take a while it seems...

So, you plan on having the SMT6 be wired into the ECU, how do you plan on compensating for when the ECU decides to overide everything? Have you ever used a SMT6 Dave? I'm not trying to rag on you, just give some helpful hints as I have used it and still do. Unless you plan to wire it into the 5th injector or get a 2nd fuel rail the Unichip is still your best bet for tuning.

Well you know us hyundai owners, the cheaper, the better ;)

The turbo box only allows you to control fuel trims. It does allow for better tuning and the ECU will not overide settings as much.

Now, now ;)

I talked to John today and told him about you yamaha and how your settings got pwned by the ECU, but he reassured me that he knows what he is doing and has done it before. I guess we'll wait and see.

I'm not going to go here comparing apples to oranges. But the SMT is a different ballgame from the Unichip. The SMT6 is a good/bad tuning option for Hyundai. It's good because it's basically a standalone for a cheaper price, being able to control fuel, timing, etc. The bad thing, if your laptop ****s the bed while tuning or you have a major electrical spike, it will be toast and require repairing. Which is what happened to me and my SMT6. I had to send it away to Denis for fixing. It has been fixed and I will be wiring it in with the turbo box and MSD to control timing. If you use the turbo box on its own, you will not be able to control timing. Only time will tell as to what happens with Alpine.

i think its a crock honestly. the smt6 can be purchased on its own and it really isn't that HARD to wire up it just may take some time. get the turbo box and msd and you should be fine from what sean is saying, and i trust sean. hes been through it before. nxtgen sells the "black box" which may or may not be similar. i've never looked into it but honestly if you're going to have to tune it on your own and dick around with it you might as well just keep the unichip, as much as i don't like it.

The SMT is a proven way to tune the car. The only reason I had so many problems is because I let someone else install it on my car and "tune" it. I learned way more from ****ing around with it on my own and wiring/unwiring it. The turbo box Denis sells can either read from rpm/boost to take the car into open loop.

Yamaha,
the turbo box won't work on it's own it needs to be activated by the smt-6
we could do a "standalone" version of the turbo box if needed, but so far we always rely on the "switch" function of the smt-6 to trigger it
why build something complicated when it ca nbe simple ;-)

BTW Dave,
i think the smt-6 might be a good asset to the alpine kits, makes it more user and tuner friendly ;-)

EDIT,
Since Kewlkat mentioned it (the GB stuff) i'll have to check exactly where i can ship the smt-6 ,i just don't want to step on other dealers toes, but i do have other stuff in our spring GB that i could let you guys benefit if you want to ;-)
