Here is the thing I found out today:
I bought my Konig Verdict rims and they came with plastic rings. I had a crazy *** vibration at 65 mph and up, but my tires were old as hell and out of round, and getting bald. Then two of my plastic rings cracked and I found Discount Tire on ebay and I bought 4 of the metal rings. Still had a vibration with them. So I figured that my tires were just completely screwed. So I bought new AVS ES 100 tires and put them on earlier this Monday. Still had the damn vibration. By the way, no rims are bent.
Anyway, I put the car up on the lift today and watched the wheels spin free in the air and you could see the wheels wobbling on the car as if they weren't centered on the hub. But the rings fit pretty snug, at least they seemed like it. I examined the ring by itself while on the hub and noticed that there was about less than a centimeter of play between the hub and the ring. It was just barely enough to be able to be seen and just barely able to be shook around on the hub.
So I popped my two good plastic rings on the front rims which fit completely snug to the hub and rim with absolutely no play. Now my vibration is damn near non-existant now. I'd say it's about 99% fixed. The other 1% is because I can still feel the car vibrating from the metal rings that are still on the back wheels. But that doesn't cause the steering wheel to shake like when the metal rings were on the front. So the bad tires were only part of the problem.
Plastic rings - Come from wheel manufactuer and fit completely to wheel and car specs, but are not very durable.
Metal rings - Will never break with normal use, but may not always fit completely to wheel and car specs.
My advice is to just get the plastic rings from your wheel company. ;)
