So i'm having some trouble deciding on a sub. I can get my hands on a 12" Type R, or a 10w6v2 both for a good deal. Both are practically brand new with no blemishes etc. What does everyone think?

JL's no doubt. the w6 is a great SQ woofer, and it will pound for a 10". Why you getting the older versions though? Why not get something brand new?
but at the same time a 12 type r is a great sub.
you would be happy with either
i like the depth of a 12 better then a 10, but i like the speed of a 10 better then a 12..
i personaly like 12s *slightly* better then 10s and more often then not recommend 12s but thats just me. the jlw6v2 is an awesome sub, just read online reviews.. but so is the 12 type r.
and both are made for clarity of sound. So once again, its a tough decision.
just cause the w6 is such a sought after sub i might lean that way.. but honestly im still stickin to the "either is good" option hehe
get what makes more sense for your setup, would you rather have a 10 or 12? which box can you get easier? as for amps, theyl both prolly need similar power, but is one svc and the other dcv? i would use those variants as a possible way to choose also..

Personally I had only Alpine gear in my car for years, speakers/subs/headunits were all Alpine, my amps were Rockford. I loved how the Type R sound when powered to the max, but JL has always had a crisp and clean sounding speaker. If it were me I would go either way.

Yeah I was leaning towards the JL as well. I have heard great things about them and it will be powered by a JL 500/1. I did want a 12" more and the nice thing is that the Type R comes with a box, the JL doesn't. I mean thats not exactly a deal breaker for me but still.
BlueRush - What do you mean they are the new models???

JL W6 I had a JLW6V1 It was Great sounded clear and loud you will love the v2, Best sub I ever had...
i would say jl > alpine but not by a landslide or nothin..
but see gettin a box with the type R is a bit nice two, and im a fan of 12s more then 10s.. i would say with a box and the bigger size those are both a +, if it were me getin that box with it would make the deal even closer in my book.. but i have to agree that the jl deal still might beat out the alpine. but now that a box is in the mix i would lean to jl only a miniscule amount..
i still say its your call, and i still say youll be happy either way
but also keep in mind that the jl will give you more braggin rights and some better punch while still delivering good boom, but the alpine will be slightly less punchy -and yes punch and boom are technical terms :D

Well I think i'm going to go with the Alpine. The price is right and the Type R is not a bad sub by any means. It will also have 500 watts going to it so its enough to get good sound. I'm getting the Type R for $150 with the enclosure. The JL will run me $175 plus my old deck, and its a 10". As nice as the JL's are i'll have plenty of time to get one down the road. Or even just skip that and get a DD sub.:D Thanks for all the input guys, i'll let you know what I decide.

wow 175 for that JL! I don't know anything about the type R, let us know how well you like it.
175 for that sub is good -they can run in the 275-300 range online + shipping
but 150 for a type r and box isnt shabby either, they can run aroun 150 then the boxes are $$$ for shipping and such, so your lookin at 200+ for that 2
hell, if i were you id take both and sell whichever you dont use for higher, those prices are nice :D

ive owned them both, and i love them both.
usually id allways recommend the JL over the alpine, but the newer JL subs have definitly come down in quality from what they offered in the past.
id say go with the alpine (i cant believe i just typed that) i truefully feel it is actually a better sub then the w6v2 mainly cause it will take more abuse.

Yeah I was going to go with the JL but I would rather have a 12 right now. Plus the Type R is brand new with a brand new box. Guy sold his car and likes the sound system in his mercedes better. But for the JL I was going to have to spend $175 and trade on my old Pioneer deck. So it worked out to be around $325 and thats still no enclosure and its a 10. So this way I have a brand new Type R ready to go, and I can sell my old deck to pay for it. I'll just spend some $$$ this summer and get a 12w6. Then all will be well :D
Edit : This is also Cdn $$ incase anyone was wondering
i personnaly run a jlw7, but i think its all up to you. What typeof amp will you have running the subs, that would determine what sub i would get, the alpine r need less power than the jl but i personnaly think the jl wouldbe better for the same money. Are you trying to go to spl or sq.

that will give u a real good idea about the jl
http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/products/product.php?model=SWR-1242D
should give you a good idea on the alpine
i know alot of people that are rrunning jl subs with a alpine pdx amp, they run it with a pdx amp instead of a jl 1000/1 because the pdx is alot more efficient than the jl amps, they require alot less current to get the same wattage. PDX digital amps are really good

I had an Alpine R12 sub...and it blew....
I replaced it with an MTX Titanium 12...and I have not blown a sub since...
I don't have any past experience with JL audio, but some of my friends have JLs and have had no issues at all.
Peace,

I'll be running the sub with a JL 500/1. I got the 500/1, a 300/4 and an Alpine HU for a good deal. Ah well I bought the Type R and i'll be getting it tuesday or wednesday. For right now it will be fine. I dont have the cash to throw around right now anyways. We'll see, this summer or next summer i'll get something better. Or if the Alpine blows, which I hope it doesnt.
nice , ithink you made a good choice.. course i still think either woulda been good hehe. so it was win win :D
