its not the best of the best but it does the job :D now i have to get a wireing harnest, cause god knows i dont wanna do the whole cutting in to wires..
ill take some real pics after the install..
thanxs
ha, my mom had an older kenwood standard cd player with an identical desisn lol. they are really milking that design cause that was like 5 years ago!
let us know how it works out for ya, my biggest gripe is that on the model my mom had the eject was sensative, i prolly accidentally bumped it like 5 or so times and in the middle of my song out pops the cd! lol.. but im sure you would get used to it usin it every day

Good luck. Hopefully that works better than the stock Kenwood that came in mine. Love the design but i'm on the 3rd one from Hyundai and the volume knob and preset keys are fugged on that one! Time for aftermarket.

Someone over on Edmunds CarSpace asked me to put together a guide to replacing the stereo. Most of this stuff is covered in EXD DIYs, but in this case I think everything is in a single link (although I linked back to the EXD dash fascia removal for the pics; I didn't want to presume it would be okay to use the pics on another site).
Anyway, this CarSpace 2001-06 Hyundai Elantra Audio Guide (http://www.carspace.com/guides/2001-06-Hyundai-Elantra-Audio-Guide) may help.
(and if SuperGLS wants to copy that to the EXD DIYs, go for it!)
^awesome info, that is really well done and well written out
also i been on the site for a while now and never new there was an oem part that included the slim surround so you cant see the bracket that hold the din unit in place. that is actually a nice option and i dont have a door anyway.. and for 20$ it would make a cleaner install. Also i hate cutting things out, i suck at it. PArt of the reason i didnt get the vinyl for the tails even when some1 here was sellin it DIRT cheap.. now if it came pre-cut to fit right on my 06 sedan.. thats another story :D

i just called best buy and they have the wireing harness for my car.. so i should be installing the unit this afternoon..
-Noe
not like theres an easy wayto check.. but when i went to best buy for the harness they sold me the wrong one.. i drove back with no dash fiasco installed and the receiver removed. i took the second one, *****ed about it, and checked the plug in the parking lot before i left lol.
it was like a 20 min drive from where i was too, i was unhappy at the time..
they also sold me the wrong antenna extension for my last car along with the wrong dash kit for my old car. i have had Terrible luck with them. They always take it back and sell me the right thing, but they need to start getting it on the first try or im just gona shop elsewhere! (and i deal with 2 diff stores and have similar probs at each, i test EVERYTHING in the parking lot if i can).

Does anyone know if those OEM trim pieces will work on the 01-03 stereos? I don't think hyundai changed anything (except for the layout of the HVAC) in this protion of the dash but I want to make sure before ordering.

Yes, that mounting unit with the door works for all XDs (2001-2006). And one way to check the connector is to see if it looks like this:

The pin numbers should match with the colors for the wires in the right hand column of this chart:

I'm talking about the one w/out the door. Don't know if it makes a difference though.

No difference. Personally, just cover up the gap with electrical tape before you put the dash fascia and detachable face on. Try it; it only takes a few minutes and it's free.

A couple of things I wanted to point out for the guide:
Firstly, I think the *first* thing is to disconnect the negative terminal ;)
Secondly, on my '06 Elantra you have to remove the OEM headunit before you can remove the dash fascia. It unit, by the way, is a Hyundai MP3-02. The bezel is a snap fit and very easily removed by inserting something tiny into the hole on the side to prise it off. To actually remove the headunit you've got to release the locking clips on either side and that is best done with a special tool.
Thirdly, the bin beneath the headunit is actually attached to the fascia. The headunit itself is secured with a bracket that includes the holes for the locking clips. This bracket is sized to retain the Hyundai headunit so its also the same size as the retainer/protection cage for the aftermarket you want to install. So it has to go.
I think an adaptor between the new headunit and the factory harness is definitely the best way to go. You don't need to cut into the harness. No need to try to solder in the dash in the car.
If you need to make up the adaptor, soldering and heatshrink tubing are definitely the best idea. Use a multimeter to check your cable before install. That'll save you a lot of frustration and potential grief ;)
I also recommend looming and insulating the wires. You want to protect them from potential mechanical damage from rubbing against something. You've got a few options:
- buy spirolex, plastic conduit or similar
- wrap a rag/foam padding/cheap material around it and secure with electrical tape or cable ties.
- wrap the whole lot in electrical tape.
On my car, the bezel trim for the aftermarket unit *can* be used. So its obviously a different setup.

Thanks for the input...

Actually, I think you need to move the gear shifter into place with the key in the ON position. If you try that with the battery off, the solenoid won't engage and you won't be able to shift out of Park (I think). But yeah, be VERY careful with the battery.

Can you send me a pic of your stock head unit?
Ooh.... I checked.... You're Australian. RH drive Elantras are completely different.
When I was talking about soldering, I meant the new head unit to the adapter harness. If that wasn't clear, I shoudl clarify. Thanks.

Yep. RH drive is totally different from LH drive.
I made some changes; hopefully no one from OZ will try to use the instructions from removing the fascia, or cut the car harness.
in my 06 the whole dash has to come out to get to the hu. also i think that the bin may be semi attached to the top.. not completely remembering, but i know when i was re-installing mine i busted one of the plastic sides that the screws go into.. so if it was, now its not! heh
ive done hu installes a buncha diff ways. soldiering and heatshink is the way to go.. but other methods will work. Like this one - take the wire and strip it at LEAST 1 inch on each side, then tie it in a knot then electrical tape over it and take a flame to the elec tape to melt it over the wire. then while the tape is still really warm take a second piece and go over it really tight for a cleaner look. If dont right the main elec tape will be melted to the wire and the second will be Really well stuck to the main tape for a clean look.
not sayin i recommend that or anthing, but when i was in a pinch it worked and it lasted the life of the car (2 years).
ive also used small sized electrition wire nuts, hey if there good enough for 120v why not 12? hehe -that also worked, but they make it look like crap and be really hard to put the hu back in due to room restrictions.
Also you can get those small metal crimp connectors. its a piece of metal in a plastic housing and you just put wire into both ends and then crimp. as long as you do a good crimp job and put enough wire in then your golden. i would recomend that as a good alternative to soldering if you realy suck at soldering. it also doesnt look 2 shabby either. and its a good way to split speaker wire if you need to also. just put 2 wires in one end and 1 in the other, voila, its split

Actually, I don't think the RH drive Elantra's are *that* different.
The instructions for removing the fascia are perfectly applicable, except you've got to remove the HU first. The clips are all in the same (reflected) places.
It's the same factory harness with the same wiring so that information all pertains, too.
Really its just the mounting of the HU which is a little different. Of course, that central section of the fascia is different but it change the way it clips in at all. The central pillar has the same screw locations for mounting. The ones for the bin aren't used at all of course, as the bin is part of the fascia.
The pics I grabbed during my install have disappeared. Seems my camera doesn't retain images when the batteries run out. Of course, I should have had an SD card in it :(

If you give a verbal description of what's different, I'll add that to it.
