In a surprise concept debut Hyundai has dropped a strange looking coupe on us.

Front end looks pretty sweet, but that rear is gaudy as hell.

Agreed there. Thankfully that'll probably be among the first things changed if they base a production model off this concept..that's just scary like a deformed hatchback....The Hatchback of Norte Dame.

thats why i hate concepts..... they never look like the production car. all the interior pieces, wheels and body accents never make it to production, which in this case may be a good thing. i agree though the front looks nice and the a$$ looks like.... well a$$

Not that much of a surprise. We knew for over 2 months that they were debuting a new coupe at Seoul's auto show. I was expecting it to be more like the Genesis or i30 concepts though - almost production ready. This is definitely still a very conceptualized display piece.
However, it does seem to be destined for production in some form
SEOUL (XFN-ASIA) - Hyundai Motor Co Ltd said it has launched three brand-new models in a bid to diversify its product mix and boost its sales both at home and abroad in competition with global carmakers.
The three models made public today at the 2007 Seoul Motor Show fair are 'Veloster, a sporty coupe aimed at young customers, the 'TQ' van, and the 'FD Estate' wagon.
The Veloster coupe is the third in a series of concept cars to be developed by the central styling studio in Korea, featuring futuristic styling and high-tech image.
'With Veloster, we wanted to try something really different. We're keenly aware that we need radically new products for the younger generation,' first-time car buyers in their twenties, Hyundai's vice- president Oh Suk-Geun said.

very intereting sunroof/rear window design, the exhaust outlet looks like a pigs nose, and the interior seems nostalgic rather than futureistic, overall I really like it

the front is reminiscent of the new evo...
the rear...well thats something to toy around with...
damn it if they want young buyers...they need to do some engine mods not just exterior styling!! i dont get it.

They haven't even said what the engine is going to be yet...so hopefully they make it a worthwhile choice, depending on how heavy that pig is...

I like the front, but the hatch really needs tweaking. I might buy it if they fix the rear.

If they want young buyers, they need to keep it cheap. Which means it would probably end up with a 2.0/2.4 Theta powerplant. As many people as there are that want a powerful car, far more will actually buy the cheaper, mediocre, car vs. the powerful car.

If they keep it nice and light along with the 2.0 or 2.4 it won't be an issue...unless they overload it with lots of junk...

I like it ... the design is carried through very well from front to rear. The radical tail isn't really out of line from the front preview.
The interior looks a bit "Playskool children's toy" though.

well you can't see the back if your looking straight at it..but that backside needs a redesign,

I like the back. It doesn't look like anything else, but to me, it's not in an ugly way.
Mike, you are right, I forgot about the Seoul preview and I was thinking this was at NY, my bad.
It's hard to say if a production vehicle based off this concept will be a replacement to the Tiburon or the cheaper car that fits the spot of the current Tiburon (which who knows as of now, there might not be one).

I kind of like this car. I think it would do well if they could position it one step up from the Accent. Kind of a cheaper Tiburon with a small engine & make the emphasis on handling over power. The back end for some reason kinda reminds me a little of the old last-gen Honda CRX. (The sort of sporty econo car market that Hyundai should be able to do well in)

Yeah, I was wondering that too. The next tib will be based off of this car (per hyundai at the genesis coupe unveiling).
Still hope they clean up the rear though.
