Ok, so I get *****ed at for being 6 minutes late for work! SIX MINUTES! Holy **** I wish they had something better to do than go ape**** about someone being 6 minutes late. Am I just a slacker or are they too anal.

Work is work, not your own personal time. They pay you to be there at a specific time, it's not that hard to accomplish
If this is the first time and he was *****ing at you, I can see it as a bit over the edge, but if you do this habitually, you should be lucky he didn't fire you.
When I had people working under me at a Speedway gas station, I usually gave them one freebie and after that they would be reprimanded. Unless they made a good viable reason, instead of crap excuses. Not because I wanted to be a dick, but because it was my job to make sure they do their job. And if they're not there to do it, I have to do their job, and my job won't get done. So everybody suffers.

Ha. I am 'on time' maybe one day a week. Other than that, I'm usually around 5 minutes 'late'. But, then again my boss doesn't care. If he did, it might be another story. I used to show up 10 minutes early, but he said since I'm officially paid "hourly" he didn't want any hourly employees showing up early and claiming they worked extra. So I said fine, I will show up late. That was about 3 years ago.

hahaha too funny^ I guess it makes sense though. One of the last places I worked them instituted a policy that you could clock in up to 7 minutes early (w/out penalty), but if you clocked in one min late you would be penalized (the same whether 1 min or 10). Needless to say, that policy did not last long.

My boss won't notice it.... Because he is always late.... :)
Anyways.. I know that my dad is a boss who says "on time is late". They come to work about 1 hour earlier..... I just feel relieved because I'm sure that I can find my job elsewhere.

It all depends on your superiors and what they think is late. If I am going to be more than 10 minutes late, I call ahead and let the boss know.

Late is late. If you can't get to work on time, leave earlier. Personally, I have no tolerance for lateness in anything. Why wait to the last second and rush in? When you're trying rush accidents happen. People get hurt.
Either find a way to get to work on time or finda another job IMO.

Late is late.
But, I agree mostly with Munky on this.

It depends on the job. In the situations where everyone is literally waiting on you in the morning before they can do what they need to do, then yeah, being on time is very important and you should expect your boss to be upset if it's a daily problem. If it's not that way and your boss is still this hard on you for being 6 minutes late... then well that sucks. But you're the one who has to decide if you're just going to (A) be on time from now on, (B) put up with an occasional tongue lashing, or (C) find another job. I'd choose A or C, by the way. You don't gain anything by pissing off your boss.

That's nothing, haha. I arrive in the morning between the times of 9 and 10 AM, so I guess I'm pretty bad about this. But then, I've grown accustomed to that kind of flexibility in the industry I've worked in for the past 6 years. I don't answer phones. I don't often deal with customers. I mostly just sit in my cushy chair and write code all day.

mostly the same thing at my work, I just deal with 2D/3D editing software and deadlines, as long as I do my job and respect deadlines my boss will never ever say anything.

I was 15 minutes late this morning. Boss wasn't happy. If i get to work late he could lose money so in my opinion he has every right to be upset. It's $$$$ man. Whenever I'm late there's potential for money loss.

at my office, you really shouldnt show up late. for the longest time, i would come in 2-3 minutes late, but being that everyone else is on the phone making calls at 8am, when i roll in at 8:02, it doesnt look good. i dont think ive done it in probably a year. there have been a couple instances when ive overslept, and in return had to work a noon-9 shift (instead of 8-5), which i guess is fair. if i cant get in at 8, i lose the chance to have my night to myself
i guess it depends on the job.

at my job if your 2 minutes late you have to have a talk with the upper authority
but most times people give the excuse the security guards were slow checking us in and they have to let that go as a valid excuse
thankfully i've only been late once

I am lucky in the fact that I am a roaming tech, which means my van is my office and I get to play in traffic all day going from site to site. So, as long as my truck is rolling (from my driveway) at around 8'ish then I am on time. I am also hourly so until my van is back to its resting spot in my driveway I am on the clock. Not many jobs out there that pay you to sit in traffic, pump gas, and sit at a dealership while you are waiting for your oil change to be done. I average about 60,000 to 65,000 miles a year on the company vehicle.

personally i HATE being late and always make sure leave early enough that i don't have to speed to get there. at my job we have a little "meeting" at 7:30 where we discuss what has to get done that day and then we all break so if you're late then you have to walk into that and sure you call once or twice and say you're running late thats fine, OR if you hit traffic thats totally acceptable. but if you're constantly running late you'll get it. i think i was "late" once and that was 5 minutes, another time i overslept but thats because my power went out over night and turned my alarm off and all that. my boss lets me get away with stuff because he knows i bust my *** from the time i get there until i leave and i work overtime when he asks.
i don't have to worry about that because i'm in at 6am most days so i'm already there!

Nope, I work for a communications company. I cover the State of Florida, into Georgia, and this summer I add Cayman Islands to the list.

Without mentioning the company, at one time I worked as a Customer Service Rep at a major telephone company.
Their rule was if you were one minute late (which was determned by when you logged into your phone) then you were late...period...no arguments or excuses. If you were late 2 times...you got a week off with no pay...and if you were late 3 times...you might be facing being fired based on your performance in other areas, or how hard your Union Rep would fight for you.
It made me more time conscious for sure as far as it goes for getting to work on time.
I am not preaching by any means...just sharing my experience.
If it was a one time thing...then your boss might be trippin.
If you are constantly coming in a few minutes late...then try to work to get up and out of the house a little earlier...and then your boss may cut you a bit of slack in the future.
Peace,

i forgot to add i think your boss was being a jerk. i dont really see a prob being late once in awhile cuz things happen just as long as your not late everyday.

your boss is anal if its a first offense, and someone that has a zero tolerance policy for lateness is also anal..you never know when stuff comes up and leaving early doesnt always solve it.
of course it depends on the job, if your a firefighter then i can see why lateness is bad...
