does anyone know how to figure out the size a box needs to be fora sub? i have a 12" YZEN sub its 800 watts and i know the box needs to have 1.1cuft(cubic feet) with a port thats 3"x8" but i dont know how to figure out how big i need the box to be. does anyone know how to figure in the space that the speaker and the port will take up ??

Check to see if that's the size of a box you need with the sub included or not, usually they include the sub with it.
To know the measurements it's all maths... Height*width*depth=volume. But you have to take in account the thickness of the wood too, so substract twice the thickness to each of the measurements.
Obviously if you start giving the box angles and stuff it will become harder to measure anything unless you are good in geometry and separate it in small triangles and cubes to calculate the volume, so a good way of "checking" is to pour, in your box, 1.1 cuft of packing peanuts or something. You know what I mean?
dont forget to take into account the size of the sub magnet etc.
some manufacturers will put that info on their site and say "air size is 1.0cf" "sub takes up .xx cf.
so i would check on that two.
Also many manufactureres will actually answer calls and qustions and you may be able to call them and just ask/verify the size requirments.

yeah its 1.1 with the sub and everything and im gonna use 3/4" mdf but i just dont know how big to cut the peices for the box im gonna do a simple shape just a plane square box with one rectangle port on the front. or i was thinking about a bandpass box anyone know how to make one of those? i think the basic layout is like this right? but if i need 1.1cuft how would that work for this kind of box?? by the way this is the speaker im putting in it...

it says on the link that it requires 1.1 cubic foot of space sealed or ported that sounds kind of wrong to me... as i know some custom enclosure guys and they always say if its sealed the box would be bigger and if ported it would require a lesser amount of space due to the travel of air out of the box into where ever do not put a bandpass in yur trunk its gonna sound crappy they are made for bigger spaces like in an suv or a hatchback

well i just won a box on ebay so im just gonna put it in that. i made an offer of 3.99 and they took itso im paying 43 in total with shipping and everything. so now im just looking for an amp. i was also maby thinking of building an enclosure for my amp and maby a cap.

if you get a cap get 1/2 a farad one because a full farad cap is rated for a 1000 watts and higher as for the amp i would go with a ma audio class d
d for digital processing that is what i have and they are unbelievable you could get a really good deal at sonicelectronix.com if you so wished they have better prices quality and selection than crutchfield plus they garuatee everything beyond manufacturers warranties too:D

well i dont really have the money for a new one right now. so i was thinking of going down to the local pawn shop. i know the owner and ive taken many people there for amps and even subs. i know they have good stuff they make you hook it up before they will take it from you. so ill get a good deal on a nice used amp. but i was thinking about getting a amp by the same company as my sub.

maybe its just me but i dont "match" them by brand.. I match them by need.. For example if i need 500 watts rms.. i'm gonna look for a amp that does that regardless of name.. W/ one exeption.. Stay away from no names.. they tend to be bad news!!

some no names are actually ok, just do your homework, read reviews and above all MAKE SURE THE AMP IS RATED RMS AND NOT PEAK!
Legacy or Pyramid 2000w amps are like 150x2 or 200x2.. 2000 watts my arse!

well the company makes diffrent series amps for their diffrent series subs. like mine is one of their level 4 sub so im gonna getthe level 4 amp with just the right amount of power. this is the amp im getting. its max peak power is 600w and my sub is 400w rms and 800w max so should i go with a amp that has like 800 peak or is this good? if you want more info heres the link by the way its the y series im getting, but im debating on the ya-300 or the ya-400.

Just go to the sub manufaturers web site, get the manual for the sub, and read the specs! It should have the recommended enclosure size on the spec sheet!
^ same goes for that amp.. ignore ANY number that sais PEAK.. they dont mean jack.. only look for RMS or Constant values.
if you wanna go the extra mile look for an amp that has the cea2006 rating, it will give you a good rated output.. even if its an odd number like 1342rms
then just match the rms of the amp and the rms of the sub. also keep in mind its actually sometimes easier to screw up a sub with LESS power. if you put a crap 200w amp on a good 500rms sub and just max the gains out on the amp to compensate for the power issue you can kill your sub easier then doing it right with a 400-600 watt amp..
so do it right the first time and be done, none of that ill get X for now and buy the right part later.. you dont want to break anything

like kewlkat mentioned above, plus take into account the port volume also. and most amps are over rated (power wise). untill you get into the high current amps, but those draw/need alot of power to produce gains.
