Low on cash, but you like the look of your stock 15" alloys? This mod is for you.

Items needed(Autozone):
Wipe Away
scuff pad
tackcloth
Dupli-Color adhesion promoter(primer)
Dupli-Color wheel coat(you'll need 2 cans)
Dupli-Color clearcoat

I got all these items for less than $30. Now for the actual process:

1.) TAKE THE WHEELS OFF THE CAR(you do not need to remove the wheel from the tire).
2.) Clean the tire with soap and water, make sure to dry thoroughly before moving onto the next step.
3.) Use Wipe Away to degrease the tire.(Dries by itself)
4.) Use scuff pad to make the aluminum rough. You basically wanna rough up the aluminum. Make sure to scrub harder on scratches, dents, etc.
5.) Use the tackcloth to clean up the dust from the tire.
6.) Spray a coat of adhesion promoter(even strokes). Wait 2-3min, then spray a second coat of adhesion promoter.
7.) Wait another 2-3min and your ready to coat the wheels. When spraying its best to use multiple light coats rather than one heavy coat. I sprayed 3 coats waiting about 2hrs between each coat.
8.) *Optional* After spraying the wheels you may spray clearcoat for more durability and polish. If you want a duller look, I dont recommend it.

I know people are gonna ask me if they gotta do all the steps, but its for your own good. All these steps will help the paint stick better to the wheel, unless you want chips and stuff ;) . Yes this process is probably not as reliable as powdercoating, but I've seen this mod on various cars and there is no problem with chipping even after a year. And hey, if you want something for the long-term then your not gonna keep your stocks, your gonna buy some nice G-Racing's with a polish lip ;) . The paint comes in bronze, graphite(gunmetal), black satin, and white.

Here are some finished pics of my '00 Tib and '87 MR2. That deep scratch on the MR2 stock wheel was "unscuffable" lolz. Sry pics are so big, next time ill get it strait. Wow i juss noticed that you cant even tell the difference in the MR2, its actually REALLY white.

I'm thinking about painting only part of the rim to match my Rally Red car; it is interesting to hear you had good results.

The problems with painting the edge of the rim near the tire is that the tire weights will cover areas when you paint the rim and will scratch the paint when they are removed and reinstalled.

Perhaps I'll paint just the inset sides of the spokes. But like 04GTboyVA, I'm lazy. Those will be my winter rims after next week, so since they'll be sitting in the garage staring at me I may paint part of them.

Wow. I'm surprised how good that looks. This is a mod that I never thought I'd consider until I saw this post. Thanks, and welcome the site.

I have an 04 GT and have been tossing around the ideas of painting just the inside of the spoke also. Actually have a friend who has a body shop and offered to do it for free. He also said he could pain the lip all the way around the wheel. He suggest going the same color as the car.

I have a crimson red car and haven't had the guts to have him do it. Could anyone photochop just the inside spokes painted. Maybe also with the lip painted.

I admit, I was skeptical. I've seen this stuff at autozone, but didn't think it'd work well. Those pics make me think this is acceptible if I come across a car needing them in the future. (not my current wheels though, they're good).

Heres a quick chop with red spokes. I know it's kinda crappy, but I'm busy.

^^That looks like sh!t and it has nothing to do with the quality of the chop.
Red looks like crap and so do 2 tone wheels like that.
So, that looks like a big pile of cow crap.

Yeah, the two-tone paint job doesn't look as good as I thought. :(

I was thinking of painting the inset part of the spokes red and leaving the face silver, but seeing the photoshopped version of the opposite, I think that will look crappy too. :(

I don't think painting them all red to match would look any better. Oh well, maybe I'll do mine all in black or gunmetal someday, too...

black may make them blend in with the tire, Then it will look like you're riding on nothing

I just think that any other color would look weird with my car, unless it was white, and im not sure how that would look. Ive given up on the red caps and lug nuts, so its either all black, or all white.

Does this hold up well? I want to paint mine for winter. I know its not going to last forever, but with some care is the salt going to eat it away and make it look a poo?

Looks good except for one thing. I am guessing you didn't dismount the rim from the tire before you did this. Anyway, it looks like you never took the wheel weights off before you painted. So when you go to get your wheels balanced and rotated, you'll have grey areas where weights used to be because when you rebalance a tire, weights rarely go back in the spot they were taking off of.

OMG i hate you lol!!! J/K I've wanted to do that to my rims sooooo bad... I just was scared to do it cuz since we have that little dish, there are some hard to reach areas to tape off and clean... you have to tell me a step by step on how you did this and what paint you used...If anything PM me with your # please.and since we pretty much have the same rims It would help me a lot.. BTW this isn't a photochop right?? lol If it is, you're good at that ****..lol

Is there anyone that can photochop my rims to look like 04GTboyVA's

But I want mine with black spokes like his and another chop to match my car color Chianti red. Of course, leave the polished lips in both chops...I would be grateful if someone was to help me please. And if it comes out good I'm doing it this weekend or something...lol

Here's a pic you guys can use...

hey dude, its so easy its not even funny i will pm you my number, i have my driver side wheels to stil paint ahha :( soo noo there not a photo chop i didnt really want to post any pictures till it was completed but someone begged me to post one picture trust me i have several pics of the passenger side

Should paint the center cap black or not? whats your opinion?

DAILLESTWUN
01-05-2006, 01:33 PM
I say paint it black.... And leave the center-center cap with that silver look. If you leave the blue ring it doesn't look right ya know what I mean. Kinda like too much going on. All black will give it more of a clean look to it. I swear, I'm in love with that look. i'll get all the info when I call you later...also, if you have any up-close shots maybe send them to me @ jimmy.davila@hklaw.com

just took the wheel off the car and taped up the area i didnt want painted
then did a coat
waited a couple hours and then put a 2nd coat left them overnight and put them back on the next day

Vampyrate
01-05-2006, 08:28 PM
yeah, that was a lot of fun painting those... i cant wait to see the finished product. if you want a step by step:
1. take off the wheel (if you want to)
2. tape off the lip, or anything that you dont want painted
3. grab whatever color you want, and go to town
4. wait a few hours and apply coats (i think we did 2-3 on his car ^ and they turned out great)

We used anti-rust paint by krylon... about 5bux a can, not too bad of a job if i say so myself :)

now i just have to get off my *** and paint my steelies and caps

I was wondering the same thing, but I have a way of sounding rude when I try to ask stuff like that. I'm thinking of painting my rims before I put them on next summer. I'm going to sand them down because they have some salt-wear on them.

fine sand and polish. those lips are pretty bad. i know people get them from curbs and stuff, but i cant figure out how for the life of me. ive never got curb rash on ANY of my wheels, and the few marks (tiny) that are on them is from the guy before me, and theyre just on one wheel

I'm going to paint the stock Elentra hubs tommorow, I was thinking flip flop, haha. Any suggestions as to what other color would look good? My Elentra is white currently, I am thinking of painting it black.

korai9989
01-23-2006, 09:54 PM
black would look good on a white elantra no doubt, especially if you have a black mesh grille or something. if there was a way to paint the lip white, i think that would be attractive.

DJPhrost
01-23-2006, 09:56 PM
I am going to be replacing the stock grill with a chrome grill eventually, but for now I ahve the stock black.

korai9989
01-23-2006, 09:58 PM
go chrome with black mesh if you want, i think that would look great if you go black with chrome/polished lip on the wheels

scampbell1324
05-10-2006, 12:14 PM
How bout this combo; Chrome mesh grille, with a polished fronts, black sides, and black on the inside of the tire, so it doesnt look bad. I know on my elantra that it's starting to rust on the inside of the tire so if i ever paint mine i'm gonna paint the inside of my tire black, so tjhat you can't see the rust, or the dirt.

Same here, cant understand how people hit their wheels so bad or at all. Im sure i would get a scratch from a bouncing rock or somthing but for the love of god dont run into a curb when ur parking, its not hard
