I'm a subbie man so i'll go with the sti over evo
I like how he says in the first vid that the sti has "the essence of man" lol
however unfortunately I never trust any study that doesn't show or do more than one test over a series of samples etc, etc, I can't remember what I learned in statistics any more...

"This Subaru is a hugely manly experience." LOL, that's right. I've seen these videos before.
These cars are so closely competitive you might as well not even listen to the critics. If you want to compare these cars then test drive them yourselves and make up your own mind. I did.

^and you went with the smart choice, unfortunately mitsubishi just recently returned to canada over the past few years and the evo is still not Canadian spec so I can't test drive both... althought my sis just picked up an 07 impreza rs and I wanna trade up!

R&T has an article in the June mag about the new ones.

I think Steve has it right, they are both amazing cars it would probably have to do with a test drive in each car and the looks when determining which you prefer.

I feel like throwing my .02 in here.
The STi is great, as it is very easy to get it to power over. It's AWD system seems a little clunky to me, but I only have experience in the STi and EVO, so I only have one other car to compare it to.
The EVO has some understeer problems, and you can't get it to power over on dry pavement under 80 mph.
I personally prefer the EVO due to it's ride height, interior seating, and ergonomics of the steering wheel and shifter in relation to the seating position. I have also been a fan of the EVO since the EVO II.
Not to mention, I also have a tattoo of an EVO VIII on my right lower leg in blue. I'll find a picture of it and post it up.

The STI's AWD is a little strange as it tends not to slip as easily as others do. In other words, if you take a tight circle at slow speeds you'll sometimes feel the tires fight one another because the differentials aren't slipping enough. You also have to remember to leave the DCCD in AUTO mode for most situations. Otherwise, this problem will be even more pronounced at slow speeds driving around tight corners and such.
But on the flip side, it's extremely good at putting power down. The overall performance of the STI's AWD is fantastic and Subaru made a good choice in making it a rear-biased AWD system. The transmission in the STI is also nearly bulletproof and doesn't have the problems that the 5-speed in the Evo did. The answer to that of course is to buy an Evo MR model with the 6-speed.
I agree about your points on the Evo. I love those Recaros. A good aftermarket racing seat is next on my shopping list and it'll probably be the Recaro Sport (practically the same seat that's in the Evo).
I was fortunate in that I didn't go to a dealer to drive the Evo, but I simply drove my friend's '06 Evo MR. I drove it pretty hard to get a feel for the acceleration, boost response, and handling. And then a few months later we went to an autocross practice day and we swapped cars at one point to push eachother's cars to the limit. We found that my car could beat his pretty handily with a good driver (my brother) but that's mostly due to the mods I've done.
But I think I have a pretty good feel of each car now. And I can see why some people would prefer the Evo. But for me, the strengths of the STI keep me coming back for more.

Now, the MR is a different story. At the time that Top Gear did that episode, the MR wasn't available. I'd really like to see a comparison between the ProDrive STi and an EVO IX MR. The MR, though only slightly more powerful than a regular EVO, it's that 6th gear and the Active Center Differential that makes it rise above. And, you can get it to power over on dry pavement, usually requiring just a little finesse to make it happen. You are definitely lucky to have driven one. If I had 36k, I'd have one right now, in white.

... the Bilsteins are nice too. ;) The suspension of the MR is very good with those Bilsteins which really pushes the car's handling & refinement in the suspension beyond the STI. I really think the biggest shortcomings of the STI are its KYB struts and the stock seats.
Of course a few aftermarket parts can change everything. I can't complain about the Ohlins I bought for my car. They provide Bilstein-like damping but with adjustability too.

I found it truly amazing when they showed the Evo outperforming a Murcielago. The coolest part was when he said how the car is prepared for every turn you take.; from having only 3 wheels on the ground, to powering just 1 for the best performance.

Of course you have to remember that the Evo that took out the Murcielago was not the version sold here, but the FQ400 which has 405 hp.

The Lambo's AWD system is crap compared to the JDM drive trains in both the EVO and STi. The only thing the Lambo has over the other 2 is the gearing and the power. And true, it was the most beautiful and outstanding FQ400 that I so wish I lived in Europe to own. Maybe someday, when I'm nearing my death bed and I've cashed in on my wife's life insurance:D
