I searched, and came up with nothing.
How do you hang a muffler on our cars? I'm getting tired of the really loud glasspack that came with my catback, and the 4" diameter tip that looks all right on a Tib, but not on my car (it's a Pacesetter Monza catback for the RD Tib, btw). I'm wondering if hanging a muffler is something I could do myself, or whether I should take it to a shop.

What do you mean, hanging a muffler? There's "hangers" under the car that the muffler hands from. But, are you wanting to replace the muffler and glasspack. If so, you either have a welder on hand to weld yourself, or you need to take it to a shop to have a new one welded on.

Not true. Not every muffle has to be welded in place. My last 3 have not been. You use muffler clamps, adapters and universal hangers. Each car is different and each owner has their own ideas. Cral under there and take apeak.

Muffler clamps? Why? From my experience with them, they are useless for preventing exhaust leaks. I mean, if you are using an OEM style oval muffler on the OEM pipe, that'd be different. But we're talking about an after market exhaust system here, he'll have to have it welded, or some pipe expansion going on to get it to slip fit so he can use the clamps. Universal hangers are nice, especially if you are adding more to prevent the muffler from moving around.

Not a problem here. Nor with any of the dozens of cars we've put exhausts on over the years.
Welding is nice, but it is not the ONLY way like some of y'all believe.

My current exhaust is clamped together. It's not leaking. I'm more concerned with cutting the pipe before the existing muffler, and leaving enough to put on the aftermarket (probably Dynomax Super Turbo) muffler.
And pipe expansions abound around here. I'd have no trouble finding one to slip over the muffler.

Bump.
Ended up biting the bullet and taking it to a shop. The guy welded in an extension and clamping on my muffler to the new extension. Looks stock-ish. I like it.

How they hung the muffler

The extension to my exhaust they added in. Slightly smaller diameter than the catback.

The model I picked up at Advance Auto for $40.

My old muffler with 4" tip that looked ridiculous and attracted too much attention from the local police. Looks a bit rice on my car, but looks good on a Tibby, where you can't see so much of it. It's also quite a bit louder than the Dynomax, yet sounds about the same tone-wise.
Glad I looked at the reviews before striking out to get a new muffler. This is a bit louder than I wanted yet, but it is quieting down slowly. The car seems a bit quicker, the engine seems to be working less to push the car. Now to put some black enamel on to keep it from rusting.
