Check out what I built on the weekend. My folks came and gave me a hand so I can't take all the credit. But I think it sure turned out nice. I even added lights to it so that at night you really get the mood. Its a 12 x 16 deck with 2 x 8 construction. We built the deck on saturday and put the railing up on sunday... well here are the pics...

OOOOOhhhh... deck envy... makes more sense now. haha.
Nice. Covering the sides between the ground and deck provides a nice storage area, or lattice work and climbing plants. Looks like you have a nice new addition there.

man that looks really nice.. looks like somebody in the fam has some construction experience i like the way you put up the lights on the rails. its small details like that that make stuff really stand out.
oh and yeah what did you do make a hidden door for the beer fridge???

Wow looks good with the deck lighting. That's almost exactly how my deck looks, except it's not as high and mine is really old.
you did that in one day? wow man. good work, looks great.
my rents had their deck rebuilt to one of similar size as yours, (actually slightly smaller) but theres was/is load bearing for part of the roof above it. I think it was 3 days of work..

 that looks like some pretty good work. I like the patio set too.
Do they seriously not require you to pour footings for your posts in Canada. I thought only warmer climates that didn't have frost heaving could get away with setting a deck on the concrete platforms. Or perhaps no permits = no footings

Looks nice. Was this a kit or completely hand built?

It's still too small ;) It's always too small LOL :D , but then again enlarging it is next years project j/k. Good looking deck  I built my deck 10 or so years ago.... just followed the instructions... mine came out pretty good, since my yard is sloped I did not put up a railing...

Thanks all... It took us the day on saturday to build the deck and then the railing went up on the sunday. It was pretty steady work but with the 3 of us ( my parents and I ) but it went pretty smoothly.
It was all just treated lumber that I bought. I had a plan in my head to use 2 2x8 16footers screwed together on the long ends and then 2 2x8 12footers screwed together on the shorter ends. I then used 2x8 12s in between at roughly 2 foot centers, and then 2x6 16s for the top boards... nice a clean looking on the floor, no joints anywhere.
As for the cement blocks, there is no rules against using them here, the ground is pretty solid where it is and there will hopefully be very little movement next spring. The reason I built it this way is because it is free standing from the house and therefore is not included in the property tax calculations. It is still deemed portable.
oh and as for the beer fridge, I am very partial to beer in a cooler full of ice so I keep the beer chilled in the fridge downstairs and then just load the cooler up with beer and ice when I am ready to sit on the deck and have a few. Plus i am trying to figure a way that I can get my cooler to hang off the far side of the railing. still working on the design plan for that though...
