I am talking about the shield that you see in front of the low beam bulb when looking into the housing. It's right in the center of the low beam side:

I could just take out the glare shield but then they may have a crazy glare and blind people.
No one?

Wait till Elantra2.001 sees this. He got Catz HID kit and if I remember correctly, he had the same problem but he somehow modified the bulb.

I actually shimmed my bulb so it wouldnt hit the glare shield...2 washers to be exact.
But thats not really the right way to do it. You can bend the shield downwards..thats what one of the guys did, but I didnt feel like having that part break on me...so..

say I saw a black elantra with some HID around my way (Northern NJ) and he had in the stock housing with what seemed like no mod and they were excellent! No glare or anything , the light was projected wonderfully downward and spread like it came with them from factory. I wonder if he is here? he had RIMS and what seem like a TV in it too.

He probably had D2R bulbs. They have some type of cut-off shield built onto the glass for applications in halogen housings. Acuras, Minis, Volvos, Benz, and many more use D2R bulbs for non-projector applications.

If I am not mistaken, you have to separate the housing and remove the glare shield. Not that big of a deal.

bringing this topic back from the dead cause now i own HID's and ran into the same prob. The bulb does hit the shield so i bent it inwards, but the beam output is not acceptable. can someone point me to the right direction for this?

You're gonna have to retro fit some HID projectors into your headlights if you want a nice cut-off. Or just live with the crappy beam pattern like I do. It still has very nice bright light output. Mine light up the road very much.

I just took my stock bulbs out and put in HID blue bulbs I didnt switch anythiung else and my lights are very blue and alot brighter

We are talkin about REAL hid's. Not halogen bulbs with xenon gas in them and wrapped in blue coating. Although some of those have a nice blue color, they all have crappy light output even compared to regualar halogens. Not to mention they burn out a lot quicker because hardly anyone that uses them does not run the proper headlight wiring harnesses for them to meet the extra wattage that those bulbs run at.

The real HID bulbs are supposed to last many thousands of hours...I forgot the number of hours exactly, but its pretty damn high!..:)
I have some glare on mine..and its not super focused like projectors, but when I do get some extra money after my holidays, i might go to hidtech to get projectors fitted.

It's between 2500-3000 hours. I wanna get some projectors too. That's the best way.

So with most of the H7 retrofit kits out there right now the bulb will be hitting the shield?
How would the D2R bulbs fit in our housing?
Kspec01

well unless the bulbs do come in different sizes, then my honest answer to this would be "yes, they do hit the shield"
I actually fabricated a small "shield" out of aluminum can for the bottom half of the bulb in order to help out with the glare, so far it seems to works, havent gotten flashed not once from no one and even had cops look directly at my headlights and just ignore me.
Your best bet if you do go with the HID route and you dont want to retrofit projectors in there is to take the time to bend straight the stock shield until the bulbs fits without putting pressure on the bulb. took me about 2 hours to get em both right. For those interested, i can take some pics of em on and so forth.

Damn, 2 hours? It took me about 5 minutes.

Despite the incorrect beam pattern, do you guys think the HIDs made a big difference in night vision compared to the stock halogens?

I saw some eleantra in Korea having problem on stock bulb housing. It melted the front part of the bulb guide. I guess they were using some cheap HID.

Could you please make a photo of stock shield and your shield ? I've installed HID kit and found the glare there. It's nasty but my friends said that now my Elantra looks ugly. I would love to prove that it doesn't.
But the way is it possible to paint the bulb instead of making shield ?

What is the glare you guys are talking about? I used a screwdriver to stick through the back and bent the shield down and towards the front. It worked just fine. They are a hell of a lot better than stock or even those damn xenon that burn out all the time.

Could you make a photo of your shield ? I just wonder is it possible to broke it during the adjustment with screwdriver :) And have you tried halogen lamps with moved shield ? Is there any difference in beam pattern ?
Thanks.

isnt the front glare shield and arm made of plastic? just like the same material made from the whole headlight?

I believe it's metal. It bent like metal.

yeah, just stick your finger inside and push forward the shield and the shield will bend forward and down a bit... which will give you more room for longer HID bulb. and another thing is that not all HID H7 conversion bulbs are the same, some bulbs are longer than the others.... Compare and choose the shorter bulbs. The shield should never touch the bulbs.

I have too much glare than I would want with my HID's. But I like the idea of a soda can to make a glare shield.
ss77892
01-26-2005, 09:59 AM
don't you think that shield should be dead dark and soda usually is glitter. Also the paint from can can be a problem.

tin? or metal that has been coated black? not painted but coated metal..?

I think we need to make a DIY on the HIDs, and R100s is right not all HID bulbs are the same sizes if we can find out which bulb is the right sizes we don't have to worry about making sheilds or doing any type of bending. Because i want to put some HIDs also, and i want to do it soon. But i'm not sure if the K has anything to do with the sizes as in the 6000k and up. Now does that have to do with the sizes of the builb to be bigger or no because not all H7 HID builds are the same. I just want to know what brand to buy with the right sizes H7 i need.

I've checked several different kits - all have the same size bulbs. Could someone who aready has his kit installed and doesn't have the glare make some photos ? bulb installed, beam pattern and so on ? Pleeease !

I have Osrams in mine, the D2R bulb type, factory HIDs from a BMW...I made shims..used two shims. Me and AvanteXd-CDN put a set of Lexus factory HIDs in his Xd and the bulbs were longer, i believe his were Philips tho. And we have put both cars side by side, mine looked bluer...if thats a word at all...:)
We had to shim his bulbs more, so it wouldnt touch the glare shields.
Maybe we can do projectors in the future?..laugh...
We kinda ran short on time for his retrofit so didnt take pictures..too bad too...we had like 3 digicams lying around..laugh..
